"Kofuku Zettousei
There is no defense! There is no need for defense! You have already robbed me of the only person I ever wanted to protect!
~ Enishi to Himura Kenshin

Summary

Enishi Yukishiro is Kenshin's brother-in-law and the ultimate antagonist of the main series. Following Tomoe's death, he emerges as a fiercely vengeful character, exhibiting traits of volatility, instability, delusion, and profound ruthlessness. Enishi's obsessiveness is undeniable, with his life post his sister's departure wholly consumed by a quest for revenge. His yearning for retribution fuels his survival, even in the severest of circumstances, and tormenting Kenshin is purported to be his solitary source of joy.

Intelligence: Gifted. Enishi, through self-instruction, mastered Watōjutsu and swiftly perfected the Nerves of Insanity technique. Despite having significantly less experience, he dedicated years to refining his swordsmanship, reaching a level of skill that rivals Kenshin's peak performance. His strategic acumen is meticulous and persistent, marked by complex planning to defeat his adversaries. He also showed leadership and entrepreneurial skills in the criminal sector, founding an organization in illegal arms production and trafficking, consolidating his control over Shanghai's underworld.

Weaknesses: Enishi is afflicted with a psychotic disorder stemming from the traumatic loss of his sister. This trauma has cultivated a mental dependency on a specific image of his smiling sister, Tomoe, which he uses to motivate himself. If this illusion of Tomoe's smile wanes, it negatively impacts his mental stability and combat abilities. Enishi's condition also prevents him from harming women who resemble his sister in age. Moreover, his “Nerves of Insanity” make him acutely sensitive to stimuli. This hypersensitivity, as demonstrated by his reaction to Kenshin's sonic boom—a stimulus generally harmless to others—can disrupt his hearing and equilibrium. Additionally, his body perceives pain at an amplified level, rendering him vulnerable to physical distress.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • Kyōkeimyaku (狂経脈, "frenzied meridian flow") – Known as "The Nerves of Insanity," this ability causes Enishi's nerves to visibly swell, enhancing his sensitivity. This heightened awareness boosts his senses, speed, and reflexes, allowing him to anticipate attacks and dominate offensively. He claims to detect the smallest details, from individual blood droplets to grains of sand. However, this technique is a double-edged sword, increasing his offensive capabilities but reducing his defenses due to an amplified vulnerability to stimuli.
  • Watōjutsu (倭刀術, sword art of the "Wō") – is a Japanese sword art with roots in mainland China, utilizing the Watō. This discipline fuses the speed and sharpness of kenjutsu's katana with the strength and flow of Chinese martial arts. Enishi's self-taught adaptation of Watōjutsu is unique, emphasizing that "the best offense is the best defense." By either launching unyielding attacks to suppress enemy retaliation or turning an opponent's force against them, Enishi's techniques have demonstrated notable effectiveness against Hiten Mitsurugi-Ryū.
  • Shūgeki Tōsei (蹴撃刀勢, "impactful sword kick") - Enishi enhances the speed and force of his upward Watō swing by kicking the back edge of his blade.
  • Kaishi Tōsei: (回刺刀勢, "revolving stab") - Enishi parries his opponent's assault with the hilt of his Watō, leveraging the force of the opponent's swing to generate momentum for a full-body and sword rotation, ultimately stabbing the opponent. This technique parallels Kenshin's Ryūkansen and is ideally suited for counterattacks.
  • Shōha Tōsei: (掌破刀勢, "palm-release slash") - Enishi grips the backside of his sword with his left hand, applying pressure before releasing it like a coiled spring, thereby amplifying the force of the swing.
  • Chōten Tōsei: (朝天刀勢, "heavenward slash") - Enishi embeds the Watō into the ground, then vaults into the air by stepping on its pommel. Subsequently, he retrieves his Watō by tugging on the cord affixed to the hilt, culminating in an upward whip-like slash directed at the overhead enemy. This ground-to-air offensive is a method Enishi employed to counter Kenshin's Ryūtsuisen.
  • Gōtsui Tōsei: (轟墜刀勢, "smashing sword force") - Employing the Watō, Enishi stabs his opponent, subsequently hoisting them overhead in a sweeping arc, then brutally slams them into the ground.
  • Shikkū Tōsei: (疾空刀勢, "skywalking slash") - As individuals reach the apex of a leap, precisely at the moment before descent initiates, the upward and downward forces counterbalance, creating an illusion of momentary levitation. Utilizing this transient phase, Enishi can harness his exceptional strength and the mass of his sword to resist gravity, executing a secondary leap mid-air. By consistently applying these principles, he possesses the ability to sustain himself in the air indefinitely. This unique technique provides Enishi a significant advantage in aerial combat against Kenshin, effectively neutralizing both the Ryūtsuisen and the Ryūshosen.
  • Senran Tōsei: (戰嵐刀勢, "storm of swords") - An assault where Enishi emulates a crouching tiger before spinning to slash upwards. Initially, Enishi assumes a posture akin to that of Kofuku Zettōsei - ducking down, left leg bent inward, right leg extending outward. However, by gripping his extended Tachi diagonally, he initiates a spin, augmenting the momentum of his attack. Subsequently, like an unrelenting whirlwind, Enishi charges at his target. This strategy has effectively counteracted most of Kenshin's ground techniques, ultimately leaving Kenshin incapacitated, unable to initiate his attacks.
  • Kofuku Zettōsei: (虎伏絶刀勢, "absolute slash of the crouching tiger") - Enishi's ultimate attack. With the hilt of the Watō facing down, the blade parallel to the back of his arm, Enishi ducks in anticipation of the opponent's attack. As the opponent strikes, Enishi ascends, simultaneously bringing up his sword to slash the opponent's chest – this is the method Enishi employed to counter Kenshin's Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki. Enishi's crouching stance serves a dual purpose, enabling him to safely evade the first strike of Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki while using the ground for support against the initial shockwave, thereby preserving his offensive posture. Moreover, Enishi ingeniously exploits the vacuum caused by the first strike of Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki, allowing him to accelerate and overpower the second strike of Kenshin's secret technique in their initial encounter. However, during the subsequent bout, this technique proved unsuccessful when Enishi's left shoulder joint was immobilized due to the more potent wind force generated by a flawless Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki, consequently providing an opening for Kenshin's second attack to shatter Enishi's sword.
