Yu Yevon
Yu Yevon was once a summoner, long ago. He was peerless. Yet now he lives for one purpose: only to summon. He is neither good, nor evil. He is awake, yet he dreams. But... maybe not forever.
~ The Fayth describing Yu Yevon

Summary

Yu Yevon (エボン=ジュ, Ebon-ju?) / (ユ=エボン, Yu-ebon?) is the overarching antagonist and final boss of Final Fantasy X, being the cause of every event in the game. One thousand years ago, he was the leader of Zanarkand and the father of Lady Yunalesca, and commanded the people of Zanarkand in the Machina War against Bevelle. However, Bevelle's machina proved too much for Zanarkand's magic, and Yu Yevon rallied the people of Spira to save their city from destruction. By turning the people of Zanarkand into fayth, they would be able to dream up an idealized version of the city, while Yu Yevon would protect them by creating an armor made from pyreflies so the summoning wouldn't be interrupted.

However, the summoning proved too costly and completely destroyed Yu Yevon's mind, while Sin was reduced to a beast that only relied on its instincts, before proceeding to destroy the real Zanarkand. Even after being defeated by Lady Yunalesca's Final Aeon, Yu Yevon simply latched onto the Final Aeon and recreated Sin around it, and would continue to do so against any Final Aeon that challenged Sin for the next thousand years. Conversely, Yu Yevon himself would be revered by the people of Bevelle, who created the Yevon religion out of the belief that Sin was Spira's punishment.

Unfortunately, he lacked the foresight to discover that Sin would first destroy the real Zanarkland before grinding technological advancement to a halt for a thousand years. By that time, Yu Yevon has lost nearly all cognitive capacity aside from his ability to summon and use magic and does not display self-awareness or sentience.

Osmose: Yu Yevon drains magical energy from his foes to restore his reserves.

Ultima: Yu Yevon fires off a bolt of pure magical energy that deals massive non-elemental damage across a wide area while ignoring magical resistances as well as magic reflection effects.

Yu Pagoda: Two stone structures that accompany Yu Yevon during the final battle. While they don't damage enemies, they are able to provide many support abilities, and every time they're destroyed they're revived.

  • Power Wave: The Yu Pagodas charge Yu Yevon's power, heal him and clear him of negative status effects.
  • Osmose: Drains one enemy of their magic energy, preventing them from using spells.
  • Curse: Debilitates enemies with several negative status effects, nullifying their ability to use techniques and magic, poisoning them, blinding them with darkness and putting them to sleep.
