Summary
The Witch (Also called the Malefica as a counterpart name to the Puella Magi in Kazumi Magica), is the 'adult' form of the magical girl. They are the inevitable result of the despair and corruption of the soul gem.
This page is a mixture of details from Explanation blog about the basic abilities of magical girls and witches, as well as the in-verse tiering system and the original general blog. This page covers the abilities appearances for the most part, to see their more detailed explanations, please visit the general blog mk II.
Powers & Abiities
- Puella Magi Physiology: Should be obvious, but also explained in Suzune Magica when explaining Suzune's power mimicry.
- Mind Manipulation: From Tart Magica to the main series, witches have been shown capable of mind controlling people in large groups or individually.
- Reality Warping: Another primary ability of witches, its been shown in various ways, such as warping a keep into their personal barrier, H.N. Elly warping a human Madoka and the reality outside her own personal space, or a combination of the two.
- Subjective Reality / Pocket Reality Manipulation: Their barriers are a pocket reality in which they hide. Also referred to as their "maze" or "wards", the pocket reality they create are shaped by the witch's mental landscape.
- Text Manipulation: Witches tend to come with Germanic Runes that describe themselves or reveal their true name. They also hint at the intelligence beneath the corruption.
- Technology Manipulation: Originally just shown by H.N. Elly, it's now become exceedingly more common with the new Magia Record anime, such as Albertine's death turning on the lights in a playground or Box Wood controlling a train's signs.
- Summoning: Every witch has her own set of minions from Gertrud to Charlotte, they all have their own duties but combat is fairly common amoung them.
- Absorption: Used both by witches and their familiars, they can absorb life energy from their victims. In the case of the familiars, after absorbing 4-5 people, they turn into a witch just like the original.
- Self-Resurrection: Witches can resurrect themselves from their Grief Seeds, as shown by Charlotte in episode 3, who was born this way, and all the witches created by Isabeau, however, this isn't combat applicable, unless the Grief Seed is filled with curses/despair thanks to external sources.
- Curse Manipulation: Witches are born from curses and live to spread them.
- Reactive Power Level: Witches grow stronger according to the despair and anguish of those around them; shown by Isabeau de Bavière and in The Howa Howa event within Magia Record.
- Power Nullification: Magical girls regularly resist the nullifying results of witch curses, but this shouldn't apply to beings without Resistance and even then, sufficient curses can bypass this as Touka explains.
- Matter Manipulation: Alongside Power Nullification, this was first shown by Embryo Eve. However, this ability is not-combat applicable unless the witch has sufficient curses.
- Inorganic Physiology (Type 2): Have you seen a witch?
- Invisibility: Outright stated by Tamura Akemi in one of her various escpades throughout the multiverse to be an ability all witches have normally.
- Large Size (Type 0 or 1): Most witches tend to be far larger than any human. A few exceptions exist here and there, but even then, they tend to have a reason. Such as it being revealed to be a fake body.
Resistances
- Unconventional Resistance to Curse Manipulation: Witches are actively producing curses, and large amounts of despair can accumilate to massively increase their attack potency and even actively seek more curses to consume as well.
- Unconventional Resistance to Empathic Manipulation: Despair would actively increase the curses of witches, which as shown above, is not a good idea.
- Immunity to Soul Manipulation: Witches are born from the complete corruption of the Soul Gem, destroying their souls in the process. The destruction, as shown by Sayaka, tends to not even leave small remnants.
Other
- Doppel Witch Physiology: Doppel Witches are assumed to have all the abilities a witch has, given they've displayed most of them. La Pucelle de Blancheur created a barrier in her attack, Kriemhild Gretchen's Soul Gem is completely gone, and etc.
