In this blog I'm going to measure the energy of DJ Octavio's punches during the final boss fight of Splatoon, which will also tell us the energy Agent 3's regular weaponry is capable of putting out.

In my last blog I found that Inkling heights range from 87.5 to 150 cm, so I'll be using both of those results in here to cover my bases.

This image shows the Inkling as standing at 211 pixels tall, with Octavio's fist being 678 pixels long. The length of his palm is also 249 pixels long, which will be relevant for speed later.

Assuming the Inkling is 87.5 cm tall, that gives us these dimensions:

  • Fist Length: 281 cm
  • Palm Length: 103 cm

Assuming the Inkling is 150 cm tall, we get these dimensions:

  • Fist Length: 482 cm
  • Palm Length: 177 cm

With our first list of dimensions, the fist would have a volume of 4.03e6 cm3. With our second list of dimensions, 2.03e7 cm3.

To find mass we will, unfortunately, have to assume a density figure. Since the fist portion appears to be, more or less, solid steel while the back portion is filled with an ink propellant, I decided to assume an average density of 4.5 g/cm3, the average between the density of steel and cephalopod ink.

At 4.03e63, that means a mass of 18,100 kg.

At 2.03e7 cm3, that means a mass of 91,400 kg. (Square-cube law is pretty nuts!)

As for the velocity of the fist, we can see at about 7:24 in this video that it takes 0.1 seconds for the fist to cross a single palm length.

If the palm is 103 cm long, this means it's moving at 10.3 m/s.

If the palm is 177 cm long, this means it's moving at 17.7 m/s.

Using the formula for kinetic energy, K = mv2/2, it can be concluded that using the first set of figures the fist carries an energy of 960,000 Joules. Using the second set of figures, 14,300,000 Joules.

Class wise, these figures would be Wall Class and Wall Class+, respectively.
