Intro[]

As requested, I'm going to find how much energy it would take to illuminate the universe, via the apparent magnitude formula. I'm using the sun, you can use whatever star you want.

Defining the Variables[]

Apparent magnitude of the source of light 

Apparent magnitude of the sun

Luminosity

Luminosity of the Sun (3.846e26 Watts)

Distance to the light source (In parsecs)

Distance to the Sun from Earth (Light years, 0.00001581 ly)


Assumptions[]

Assuming the universal light bulb originates on Earth, we'll give the distance from Earth to the edge of the universe (14256964811.866 parsecs).

We'll also assume is -25.00 (Minimum brightness that causes slight eye pain)

Calc[]

Which gives us 6.764e56 W with the calculator, or plugging everything in like the formula above (removing the units), I get 6.297e55 W.

The calculator only gives a 9.3% margin of error, which I'm fine with since I'm lazy. :^)

Results[]

Since we only calculate yields for one second (as not to inflate calcs by giving it the values based on the duration of the event):

As watts and joules/second are directly proportional:

Calculator version: 6.764e56 W = 6.764e56 j/s = 6.764e56 J, or 6.764 Terafoe 4-B

Formula version: 6.297e55 J = 62.97 Gigafoe 4-B

I stuck to the original units / standard values given by the formula. Changing the units will give you a different number, but should still be in the same ballpark as the numbers above.

Swapping out the distance to the source of light while keeping the distance to the sun in light years, for example parsecs to meters, would've changed the feat from 6e55/56 W to 5.99e88 W, which would be nigh 3-A.

Changing the distance to the sun from light years to meters, and having the distance to the source in meters would've given me 6.69e56 W, more accurate.

Keeping the sun in meters and having the distance to the source in parsecs, would've given me 7.03e23 W.

So unless you change both units, your values will obviously be wrong.

I prefer to use a calculator rather than the formula.
