This is a long since accepted feat, but to this point people always link it to a calc from me, that has that as in-between result where the main result is not accepted.
So for better linking I will basically copy the relevant part over, also sourcing things a bit better. Since it was already accepted in the past, and the result didn't change by even one joule, I will not bother the calc group with it, though.

So what we have to calculate is the change in the earths rotational energy when it rotates so much slower that the day lasts an extra 5 minutes.
Rotational energy is given by E = 1/2 * I * w^2, where I is the moent of inertia and w is the angular velocity.
Moment of Inertia of a sphere is 2/5*m*r^2, where m is the mass and r is the radius.
The angular velocity is given by 2*pi/T, where T is the time necessary for a full rotation.
For earth m = 5.9722*10^24 kg and r = 6371000 m.
The Time necessary for a rotation before accelerator slowed it is 24h = 86400s.
The time after is 5 minutes more, so 86400s + (5*60s) = 86700s.
Difference between energy before and after is (energy before)-(energy after). Now we can simply plug everything in: 1/2*(2/5*5.9722*10^24*6371000^2)*(2*pi/86400)^2 - 1/2*(2/5*5.9722*10^24*6371000^2)*(2*pi/86700)^2 = 1.7712992077979936515e27J
