IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a MASSIVE work in progress and will definitely be messy. Sorry in advance.

A word of note: Oh boy, this is going to be a doozy. D&D is a massive, horrendously large verse that is well-dated since 1974 and has been active since. In short, in this blog, i will attempt to give a basic idea of what that verse is, it's cosmology, and the tier ranking systems of each of the deities. Understand that, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, who created D&D, are well versed in cosmology. The results of this blog might surprise you.

Many Planes of existence in the D&D verse are infinite in size. Many places, like the Abyss, consist of hundreds (at least 666) infinite layers, while others consist of literally infinite layers of infinite planes.

Each Plane is literally it's own universe, set with it's own spacetime.

Each Deity or Primordial who controls the Plane, literally becomes one with the Plane. Lolth, for example, was able to, via sheer will and magic, rip her Plane of Existence (The Demonweb) from the Abyss and move it to a freestanding location within the Astral Sea.

Simply "ruling" a Plane is not so simple for Deities and Primordial in D&D, they are literally of the Plane itself.

The Gods control these Planes of existence, with stronger deities like Silvanus controlling literally at least 4 infinite-sized universes.

Summary[]

What is D&D?[]

Dungeons & Dragons (abbreviated as D&D) is a paper-and-pencil role-playing game (RPG).[1] Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson created Dungeons & Dragons in the year 1974. It was first published by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). The game has been published by Wizards of the Coast since 1997.

It is normally played indoors with the participants seated around a tabletop. A typical Dungeons & Dragons game consists of an "adventure" in a fantasy world or "campaign setting". Typically, each player controls only a single character. The results of the characters' choices and the overall storyline for the game are determined by the Dungeon Master (DM) according to the rules of the game and the DM's interpretation of those rules.

Termonolgy[]

Published: (aka "canon"), is events, characters, and whatnot that directly appear sponsered by Wizards of the Coast, and by extension, what we will be covering in this blog and this site.

Homebrew: (aka, "possible canon") is events, characters and whatnot that haven't directly been sponsored by Wizards of the Coast, but still can possibly make an appearance or influence within "Published" D&D work. As long as it doesn't contridict the Published, Homebrew is generally accepted. However, for all intents and purposes, we will ignore Homebrew for the moment.

Planes of Existence:  is just a fancy word for meaning universes, complete with their own space-time and creators.

Gods: A deity is a being of great power that controls some aspect of mortal affairs, referred to as the god's portfolio.

Primordials: Also known as the Dawn Titans, were god-like beings made of manifested entropy and elemental energy who helped shape the Multiverse, mostly the Elemental Chaos.

Remember: Worshippers are necessary for the continued existence and powers of a Deity/Primordial. The numbers and fervor of a god's worshipers determine in large part the power of the deity. Deities without worshipers or who are fading in popularity fade in power, and in extreme cases can even die from neglect and the only effective way to permanetly kill a diety blessed by Lord Ao is to destroy their followers. They are relient upon them to survive.

Cosmology[]

The Cosmology of D&D is pretty straight forward and simple, but i will go over it regardless.

4e FR cosmology

The World Axis was composed primarily of the fundamental and parallel planes. "Above" and "below," the fundamental planes encircled the rest of the cosmology, forming hemispheres in the conceptual model, though since both the Astral Sea and the Elemental Chaos were infinite in size, this was mostly metaphorical. To the "left" and the "right" of the Prime Material Plane, which laid at the center of this cosmology, sit the parallel planes, which floated in sync with the Prime. Together these planes formed the World Axis, other planes lying outside of the model and having an indistinct cosmological placement.

The Prime Material Plane, aka the natural world or the mortal world, is in the Center of the World Axis.

Surrounding the Prime and the parallel planes were the two fundamental planes: the Astral Sea and the Elemental Chaos. The fundamental planes, according to common theory, were the basis from which all the other planes, including the Prime and its echoes, were formed.

The Astral Planes of Existence[]

Olympus

Banehold[]

Formerly known as the Plane of Gehenna, is an evil aligned plane of existence. It's home of the Black Lord Bane, and the Gods who owe their fealty to him, possessing huge vast deserts of black sand and huge plains of dark granite. No water can be found on this plane, no sunlight fills the sky.

The Deities who dwell here are: Bane, Beshaba, Hoar, Loviatar and Talona. Kuraulyek dwells in this plane's Underdark.

This is a single infinite plane without layers.

It links directly to the Abyss, Hammergrim, The Blood Rift, and the Prime Material Plane.

Banehold

Celestia[]

Largest and most powerful of the goodly realms, many different pantheons exist here and it's honestly too large to accurately describe it. In the past, all goodly deities would dwell in Celestia, or the Heavens. However, now, many have their own planes of existence. Celestia consists of 7 infinite planes of existence, each one above the last, with the truest Heavens above. It is ruled by the very powerful greater deity, Torm.

Lunia[]

First Layer of Celestia, the Silver Heaven. Huge Lakes of Holy Water act as an effective deterrent to evil outsiders. Tyr, Brihaspati, Shifukujin and Trishina dwell here.

Mercuria[]

The Golden Heaven, called because of the golden light that permeates everything. This Plane of Existence is known for great tombs and momuments to noble warriors. The deities Bahamut, Torm, Surya, Mitra, Vishnu, and Amaterasu all dwell here.

Venya[]

The Pearly Heaven, colder than the other Planes of Celestia, with snow covered hillsides. The Halfling Pantheon dwells here.

Solania[]

The Crystal Heaven. Holy Shrines and Monasteries and magnificient cathedrals dot the area, while the Dwarves work tirelessly in the mountains. This realm is ruled by the deity Moradin and the Dwarven Pantheon.

Mertion[]

The Platinum Heaven, is known for it's healing waters and mustering ground for huge forces of Paladins and goodly celestial creatures. The City of Tempered Souls, Empyrea is located here.

Jovar[]

The Glittering Heaven, a huge seven-layered ziggurat, with a large staircase facing each level. The powerful celestial, Xerona, judges who may enter the portal to Chronias.

Chronias[]

The topmost and final layer of Celestia, known as the Illuminated Heaven. Any who enter this Plane of Existence are instantly consume by Celestia and become one with the Plane.

Celestia

Cynosure[]

Neutral meeting place of the Gods. Formerly known as the Outlands, it's very close to the Prime Material Plane, only accessable by Deities and Primordials. This Plane is used to settle disputes and decide upon punishments left by Ao's Guidelines.

Outlands

The Deep Wilds[]

Home of Silvanus and his divine servants, the nature deities like Mielikki, Auril, Malar, and Umberlee. Silvanus ruled the Plane and other deities served him. It is infinite in size, and contains every type of enviroment on the Prime Material Plane, although more extreme.

Silvanus dwelt in Summeroak, Umberlee lived under the Blood Sea, while Malar lived in the Land of the Hunt.

Auril dwelt in the Land Under Eternal Ice, which is the coldest place in existence.

Speculation: 'We do not know how cold, but we can speculate considering how cold some of the other planes can get, Auril is a ice-related deity, and should have some powers and immunity to absolute zero.

Deep Wilds

The Demonweb Pits[]

Lolth's domain and was formerly a layer of the Abyss, the 66th to be exact. However, as a wonderful feat, Lolth broke her domain away from the Abyss to form it's own Plane of Existence. Go her!

It is immeasurable and infinite in size.

Lolth rules this domain and only her son, Vhaeraun opposes her, despite her encouraging the activity.

Demonweb Pits

.

The Dismal Caverns[]

Ruled (loosely) by the Drow God, Ghaunadaur, the Elder Eye, a former member of the Drow Pantheon. Ghaunadaur fled to The Dismal Caverns as he was fed up with the machinations of Lolth.

The Great Mother, Ilsensine, and Laogzed also make this domain their home.

Incidently, the Dismal Caverns is one of the not infinite planes of existence.

The Dismal Caverns

The Eternal Sun[]

Domain of Amaunator and Siamorphe, very little is known about this Plane of Existence, as it was once thought to be erased during the Spellplague, however, it has recently resurfaced.

The Fugue Plane[]

A Neutral plane of existence within the Astral Sea, where the souls of Mortals are drawn when they die. This infinite sized Plane consists of no topographical features, with a gray sky. The only notable feature is the City of Judgement, where the gods Kelemvor and Jergal reside.

Fugue Plane

The House of Knowledge[]

is an ancient and tamed wood of giant oak trees and lakes and springs, the Library of All Knowledge exists here, where anything can be learned.

The Nine Hells[]

Also known as Hell or Baator, it is the home of the devils. There is a very rigid chain of command, unlike the demons of the Abyss. There is constant warring between the lords in the Nine Hells, with the Demon Lord Asmodeus ruling over the entire Plane of Existence.

Note: I will not be catalogging all of the Hells, as most of them do not have notable characters.

Tu'Narath

Warrior's Rest[]

Dominion of Tempus, the God of War.

In this realm, warriors fight for all of eternity, with the name being ironically misleading.

Tempus allows other deities to shape his realm, but can easily undo anything in his realm if he chooses to do so.

Other Deities: Garagos, the Red Knight, Uthgar, Valkur, Beshaba.

The Planes of the Elemental Chaos[]

The Abyss[]

The Abyss was the home of demons and was ruled over by none, though several of the powerful demon lords each claimed control. A multi-layered pit , the Abyss laid at the very "bottom" of the Elemental Chaos, waiting to draw in and ensnare any who came too close. This Realm is described as being "infinite in layers and without direction" and Innumerable, immeasurable layers Notice: Due to the size of the Abyss, at least 666 infinite layers, i am not going to write about all of them. Most are unknown. However, there is *nothing* stating the Abyss is only 666 layers. It's at least.

I will state notable creatures in the bottom of the blog.

The City of Brass[]

The City of Brass was the home of the efreeti, fire genies who long ago forged this city, which was believed the oldest in all the planes. Though efreeti were known for their wars against other elementals, the City of Brass was best known as the center of interplanar trade.

Feats[]

D&D Multiverse is confirmed to being Infinite with the Abyss

Vecna damaged the Infinite Multiverse.

Lady of Pain repairs the Infinite Multiverse.

Asgorath created the Infinite Multiverse.

Ao the Overdeity uses Sphere of Annihilation , a spell powerful enough to destroy the Primordial Force, Entropy, from all layers of existence and non-existence. Then revives him as he's a cosmic force in the Multiverse.

Lolth breaks apart the Abyss to form her own Plane of Existence.

Tempus can, with a casual thought, erase all of his Exarchs work on Warrior's Rest.

Each Realm within a Plane of Existence is it's own Universe with it's own Space-Time, as confirmed within the Abyss, Celestia, The Nine Hells, and the Far Realm.

Many other feats.

D&D Tier System. Oh Boy, this is going to be fun. Not really, but here it goes.

Ao the Overdeity: At the top of the God Tiers, he was the Supreme Deity in the D&D Multiverse, and still answered to someone whom he called "Master"

"Ao closed his eyes and blanked his mind. Soon, he fell within himself and entered the place before time, the time at the edge of the universe, where millions of millions of assignments like his began and ended.

A luminous presence greeted him, enveloping his energies within its own. It was both a warm and a cold entity, forgiving and harsh. "And how does your cosmos fare, Ao?" The voice was at once both gentle and admonishing.

"They have restored the balance, Master. The Realms are once again secure."

-Troy Denning, Waterdeep, 3rd Book of the Avatar Series.

Ao the Overdeity is High 2-A, likely Far Higher (Far Superior to all of the other deities, literally worked to Govern them all, including the Lady of Pain, who could repair the Infinite Multiverse).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Vecna_Die states the Vecna, who damaged the Multiverse, is a Lesser Deity and a "lesser threat to the Multiverse", hinting at why the Lady of Pain simply ignores him in the beginning. That means that other deities like Gruumush and others should be immensely above him. This also scales to the Lady of Pain being 2-A.

All of the Greater Deities are comparable to each other in strength and constantly war with each other.

The Primordials are comparable to the Greater Deities and should sit at "At Least 2-A"

Torm, being the strongest among them alongside Asmodeus, should sit at "At Least 2-A" for being immensely stronger than Vecna.

The Deities below Torm should be (in the cases where they control a Realm), should be 2-C, for controlling a Space-Time within their own Realms, with the strongest among them being 2-B for being comparable to Vecna.

The Exarchs, below that, should be categorized different, based off accepted feats, as their tiers greatly differ.

Each Greater Deity and Primordial should exist outside the natural flow of time, considering they affect how the Space-Times of their domain work, as Lolth, a Greater Deity, has complete control over Space-Time in her own Domain.

Lesser Deities should have the power over the space time within their own individual realms.

Exarchs and below should be analzyed on a case-by-case value in the speed category as well.

tl;dr

Ao the Overdeity: High 2-A, likely far higher (Far Superior to all other deities, literally Governed them all, including the Lady of Pain who could repair the Infinite Multiverse).

Speed: Immeasurable (exists outside the confines of time)

Greater Deities like Gruumush, Lady of Pain, and Torm: At least 2-A (Immensely stronger than Vecna by an unknown margin)

Speed: Infinite, if not Immeasurable.

Primordials: At Least 2-A (comparable to the Greater Deities they often warred against)

Speed: Infinite, if not Immeasurable. (Comparable to the Greater Deities)

Vecna: 2-A (damaged the Infinite Multiverse)

Speed: Unknown, likely Immeasurable.

Lesser Deities: 2-C (Most can control their own Realm including the Space-Time within their Realm)

Speed: Infinite (can operate in their own frozen spacetimes)
