To soothe the spirits of those it killed and to make sure it claims no further victims... I will swing my blade down and lop off the head of any demon without mercy! But I will not belittle those who regret their actions... and suffer over the things they did as demons. Because demons were once human. Because they were like me.
~ Tanjiro's ideology about demons

I'm sure I am not one of those chosen users. But, even so, even though I'm not chosen, even though I lack the power, there are times when I can't just back down from someone, no matter what. Because there are people who don't have human hearts in this world. They irrationally take lives and cause pain without regretting it. And that kind of violence... is something that I will never allow.
~ Tanjiro's willpower

The strong should aid and protect the weak. Then, the weak will become strong, and in turn, they will help and protect those weaker than them. That is the law of Nature.
~ Tanjiro's counter to Akaza's beliefs of the weak being worthless

Let's put an end to this. Muzan.
~ Tanjiro to Muzan Kibutsuji before their final battle

People who risk their lives for others do so because they refuse to let anyone experience the same suffering and sadness that they have endured
~ Tanjiro talking about the Demon Slayer Corps to Muzan Kibutsuji in his mind

Summary

Tanjiro Kamado (竈門かまど たんろう Kamado Tanjirō?) is the main protagonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba. Tanjiro is a kind-hearted young man who has taken it upon himself to support his family, finding happiness despite their lives hardened by his father's death. But that brief warmth is shattered one day when Tanjiro finds his family slaughtered, and the lone survivor, his sister Nezuko Kamado, turns into a demon. However, to his surprise, Nezuko still showed signs of human emotion and thought.

The fact convinced him that Nezuko was different from other demons, and he hoped she could become human again. Thus, he embarked on a journey to become a Demon Slayer to find a cure for his sister and fight demons to prevent others from suffering the same fate as him.

His Demon Slayer Mark is now always active and has become his new Base Form. Kept up with and parried attacks[49] from a casual Akaza for an extended period, impressing him with his growth and sliced off Akaza's head once he finally got an opening.[50][Statistics Values 9])

Speed: At least Massively Hypersonic+, likely higher (Can keep up with Akaza. Should be significantly faster than Unmarked Mitsuri who could dodge lightning and Tengen who could cut numerous bombs before they even explode.[51][45][Statistics Values 10]), higher with Dancing Flash, Relativistic with the Transparent World (Watched Giyu and Akaza as if they were in slow motion.[50] Completely dodged Akaza's Final Form, and blitzed him [ with the latter not even being able to react].[50][Statistics Values 11])

Stamina: Superhuman (Constantly keeps pushing himself to the limits of his stamina, much higher than previously), higher with the Hinokami Kagura (The same skill allowed his sickly father to dance from sunset to sunrise out in the snow while barely clothed, with his father saying that he could dance forever, though this is likely hyperbolic) | Superhuman (Endured extremely taxing training for seven days non-stop with no food, no sleep, and only a small amount of water from rain,[55] later drained for even greater stamina, was also getting injured frequently during the training session. Fought Lower Rank-level demons in the Dimensional Infinity Fortress for nearly 5 hours[56][57][58] on top of fighting Akaza.) | Infinite (Demons don't tire)

Optional Equipment:

  • Yushiro's Talisman (Can mask his presence)
  • Axe (An axe he used to collect wood and fight demons)
  • Warding Mask (Personally hand-carved by Sakonji Urokodaki for his students to protect them from harm)

Intelligence: Gifted in general, Genius combatant (Tanjiro is highly analytical and sagacious, with a natural aptitude and innate intuition in various areas. He can create strategies on the fly to defeat vastly superior opponents, even at the cost of his own life. After seeing it once, Tanjiro can analyze a fighting style, even in constantly shifting environments, without any advantages. He has an explosive growth rate and can adapt quickly to any opponent. Tanjiro is especially good at using his opponent's abilities against them. He can deduce their powers rapidly by picking up subtle phrases and words throughout their fights, even if the opponent offers no specific details. He can develop new skills and breathing styles, which he can utilize effectively after using them once. Tanjiro can also combine techniques despite needing to be fully proficient. For instance, he combined the Water Breathing and the Hinokami Kagura to save Hinatsuru from Gyutaro. Later, he used it again during the Dimensional Infinity Fortress Arc to slay dozens of demons. Tanjiro has also shown proficiency in hand-to-hand combat, even though he has no prior martial arts training. He can hold his own and instantly adapt to Inosuke's animalistic, unarmed fighting style. Giyu, who encountered Tanjiro for the first time, was impressed by Tanjiro's plan to attack him by surprise, charging him unarmed and attempting to bring him down with a pre-thrown hatchet. Although the attack failed, Giyu was impressed by Tanjiro's plan, especially considering he was a rookie.) | Animalistic (Is only driven by Muzan's final will to eradicate the Demon Slayer Corps)

Weaknesses: Cannot lie convincingly, and cannot use the Hinokami Kagura more than a few times without exhausting himself and doing so after using Water Breathing techniques wreaks havoc on his body. | Cannot lie convincingly and Rage Power has a time limit, as he cannot keep that up for long. Demon Slayer Mark takes a toll on his stamina. | Cannot lie convincingly. | Wisteria flowers are poisonous to him. Animalistic in combat. Subconsciously still protective of Nezuko.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

Water Breathing (みづきゅう Mizu no kokyū?): A Breathing Style that mimics the element of water, specifically the flow, flexibility, and adaptability of the liquid and replicates it with the user's movements, techniques and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques involve the user bending their body, arm, and weapon in a flowing motion, allowing users to unleash flowing water-like attacks and fluid deflection of incoming physical attacks.

  • First Form: Water Surface Slash (いちかた みな面斬もぎ Ichi no kata: Minamo Giri?): The user generates enough momentum to create a powerful single concentrated slash.
  • Second Form: Water Wheel (かた みづぐるま Ni no kata: Mizu Guruma?): The user leaps and vertically spins forward in the air while releasing a flowing attack in a circular motion.
    • Second Form: Improved, Lateral Water Wheel (かたかい 横水よこみづぐるま Ni no kata kai: Yoko Mizu Guruma?) - An alternate variation of Second Form: Water Wheel created by Tanjiro Kamado that unleashes a horizontal spin instead of a vertical one.
  • Third Form: Flowing Dance (さんかた 流流りゅうりゅう San no kata: Ryūryū Mai?): The user swings and bends their blade in a winding motion along with their body and dances in a flowing pattern, slicing everything in its path.
  • Fourth Form: Striking Tide (かた しほ Shi no kata: Uchishio?): The user makes multiple consecutive slashes while twisting their body and sword in a flowing fashion to deliver numerous blows simultaneously.
    • Striking Tide: Turbulent (しほらん Uchishio - Ran?): An improved version of the Fourth Form: Striking Tide. The user increases the number of consecutive strikes and slashes, improving its accuracy in contacting a specific target during a chaotic situation.
  • Fifth Form: Blessed Rain After the Drought (かた 干天かんてん慈雨じう Go no kata: Kanten no Jiu?): The user changes the grip on their sword and decapitates the opponent in a single flowing strike that causes little to no pain. It is a “sword strike of kindness” used when the enemy willingly surrenders.
  • Sixth Form: Whirlpool (ろくかた ねじれうづ Roku no kata: Nejire Uzu?): The user fiercely twists their upper and lower body, creating a whirlpool of air that cuts anything caught in it. Its effect and efficiency are enhanced underwater, allowing users to draw water around their weapon to improve their slashes.
    • Whirlpool, Flow (ねじれうづ流流りゅうりゅう Nejire Uzu - Ryūryū?): A combination of Third Form: Flowing Dance and Sixth Form: Whirlpool created by Tanjiro Kamado. The user combines the footwork from Flowing Dance and the twisting movements of Whirlpool, resulting in the swordsman performing an attack around the user and conjuring a twisting, swirling, vicious flow of water to redirect projectiles from multiple angles.
  • Seventh Form: Drop Ripple Thrust (しちかた しずくもん Shichi no kata: Shizuku Hamonzuki?): The user performs a fast and accurate stab, capable of reducing the impact of a moving target.
    • Drop Ripple Thrust, Curve (しずくもんき・きょく Shizuku Hamonzuki - Kyoku?): A modified strike that hits from a specific angle corresponding to the sword's structure which nearly nullifies the impact and momentum of a moving object.
  • Eighth Form: Waterfall Basin (はちかた 瀧壼たきつぼ Hachi no kata: Takitsubo?): The user cuts the target vertically in a flowing motion which is most effective when they are falling downward.
  • Ninth Form: Splashing Water Flow, Turbulent (かた すいりゅう飛沫しぶきらん Ku no kata: Suiryū Shibuki - Ran?) - The user changes their footwork in a way that minimizes the landing time and surface needed when landing, allowing the user to move without limits. Ideal when fighting in a place with no solid foothold.
  • Tenth Form: Constant Flux (じゅうかた 生生せいせいてん Jū no kata: Seisei Ruten?) - The user performs a continuous flowing attack which seemingly takes the form of a water dragon that increases in strength and power with each rotation due to momentum.

Hinokami Kagura (ヒノカミ神樂かぐら Hinokami Kagura?): Later revealed to be the Sun Breathing (きゅう Hi no kokyū?), the Hinokami Kagura is a Breathing Style Tanjiro learned from his father when he was a child that mimics the sun using the user's movements, techniques and abilities. This Breathing Style allows for stronger attacks and makes it feel like opponents were slashed with fire. It slows down a demon's regenerative healing factor (Demons capable of regenerating limbs at subsonic speeds could barely heal from it). There are 12 known forms created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni and later, a thirteenth one specifically created to counter Muzan Kibutsuji himself.

  • Dance (えん Enbu?): The user delivers a single high-powered vertical slash.
    • Dancing Flash (えん一閃いつせん Enbu Issen?): Tanjiro developed a modified version of Dance, which combines Thunderclap and Flash technique of Breath of Thunder into the high-powered slash of Dance by inhaling huge amounts of oxygen, increasing the pumping of blood through the entire body, focusing it on the legs, and releasing it all to assault the target with a slash. This technique was capable of out-speeding Genya Shinazugawa, Nezuko Kamado, as well as the fleeing Hantengu. However, it is said to be slower than Zenitsu Agatsuma's Thunderclap and Flash.
  • Clear Blue Sky (へきてん Heki-ra no Ten?): The user spins their body horizontally to deliver a 360° slash.
  • Raging Sun (れつじつこうきょう Retsujitsu Kōkyō?): The user unleashes two horizontal slashes to hit or defend from incoming attacks.
  • Burning Bones, Summer Sun (しゃっ骨炎陽こつえんよう Shakkotsu En'yō?): The user unleashes a large circular slash that defends from imminent frontal attacks.
  • Setting Sun Transformation (斜陽轉身しやようてんしん Shayō Tenshin?): The user backflips into the air to deliver a powerful upended sword slash that aims to decapitate their target.
  • Solar Heat Haze (輪陽炎りんかげろう Hirin Kagerō?): The user charges towards the target, unleashing a horizontal slash seemingly covered in haze that fails to land, but actually does hit the target.
  • Beneficent Radiance (輝輝きき恩光おんこう Kiki Onkō?): The user spirals into the air and delivers a powerful slash that surrounds the enemy.
  • Sunflower Thrust (ようとつ Yōkatotsu?): The user unleashes a single thrust attack with the point of the blade.
  • Sun Halo Dragon Head Dance (日暈にちうんりゅうかぶり Nichiun no Ryū Kaburimai?): The user unleashes a continuous fast and powerful sword attack that seemingly takes the form of a Japanese dragon made of solar flames. This technique is capable of decapitating multiple targets at once.
  • Fire Wheel (しや Kasha?): The user leaps behind the opponent and spins in the air downward, releasing a sword attack in a circular motion.
  • Fake Rainbow (幻日虹げんにちこう Gen'nichi Kō?): The user performs high-speed twists and rotations, thus creating afterimages mainly used to evade attacks. The afterimages work most effectively on enemies with good vision.
  • Flame Dance (えん Enbu?): A two-combo strike which starts with a vertical slash and then a horizontal one right after.
  • Thirteenth Form (じふさんかた Jū San no kata?): The user performs all twelve forms of Sun Breathing repeatedly to improve accuracy, agility, and reduce fatigue. This form was created solely to take down Muzan Kibutsuji since the repetition of all twelve forms aims to eliminate Muzan's twelve vital organs (seven hearts and five brains) that move freely inside his body.

The Transparent World (とおかい Sukitōru Sekai?): Tanjiro can enter the Transparent World by focusing on his body and "closing" unneeded actions. In this state, he gains speed, strength, and perception. He can see through an enemy and predict their movements by observing their muscles, blood vessels, lungs, and contractions. Additionally, Tanjiro's heightened perception grants him greater speed and reflexes.

The Selfless State (無我むがきょう Muga no Kyōchi?) or the Realm of the Highest/Domain of Supremacy is a mysterious state of being associated with the Transparent World and is implied to be the zenith of physical combat. In this state, his fighting spirit, emotions, and intent are impossible to detect.
