“ | Oh, I know who you are. It's all I know, really, and that's the problem. I am your fault. Starline? Eggman? Sure, they're part of this and they'll get theirs, but it really comes down to you. If you had just taken them out, I wouldn't have been made! Or is that against your precious "moral code," you could've just rolled over and quit! But no! You keep on fighting! You keep on giving idiots the freedom to repeat their awful mistakes! And it just keeps on going and going and going! And the whole world loves you for it. So I'm ending it. All of it. You. The docs. The world. It's what you all deserve. | „ |
~ Surge's introductory monologue towards Sonic |
“ | You don't get it! I was built to live in your shadow. It's in my blood, my bones, my brain. There is no freedom for me...NOT WHILE YOU'RE STILL ALIVE! | „ |
~ Surge to Sonic |

“ | We burn it all down! Sonic! Eggman! Every idiot that follows either of them! We end it all! No more heroes! Villains! Nothing! If we don't get a past, they don't get a future! | „ |
~ Surge to Kit about their motivations |
“ | Once the "Heroes" and Doctors are done, we're free to play it be ear. Hunt down all their little friends, topple every stupid city that trew 'em a parade, tear it all downn. Just you and me, Kid. | „ |
~ Surge to Kit |
Summary
Surge the Tenrec (サージ・ザ・テンレック Sāji za Tenrekku) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is an anthropomorphic tenrec with villainous and modified cyborg enhancements implanted by Dr. Starline and with no memories of her past, and the companion of Kitsunami the Fennec. She was made for the sole intended purpose of destroying Sonic the Hedgehog and replacing him as the hero of the world. However, after discovering the secret of her origin, Surge would begin seeking revenge on everyone she blames for her past life being taken away from her.
Powers and Stats
Tier: 2-C, higher with Boost, far higher with Overcharge
Name: Surge the Tenrec, "The Mean Green"
Origin: Sonic the Hedgehog (Main Continuity) (Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #1)
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown
Classification: Anthropomorphic Tenrec, Cyborg, Cybernetic Enforcer (Referred to by Starline[1])
Powers and Abilities:
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics
- Cyborgization
- Acrobatics (Her body was cybernetically enhanced[2] and "perfectly calibrated" to resemble Sonic[3] by specializing and combining the bio-data of Sonic, Neo Metal Sonic, and Shadow;[2] to this end, her high-speed movements and her agility matches Sonic's to such a degree[4][5] that Dr. Eggman's security algorithm could not properly distinguish the two[5] and Sonic himself even had trouble taking her on.[3] Furthermore, she can even perform rapid-fire Homing Attacks[4] and impossible Spin Dashes,[5] instantly accelerating both on the ground[3] and in the air.[6][7] Moreover, Doctor Starline further augmented her abilities using his research of the Power Cores,[8] granting her an even higher level of physicality[9])
- Boost (Standard)
- Afterimage Creation (Is fast enough to generate several afterimages simultaneously, leaving behind streaks of light in her wake[3])
- Spin Dash (Standard)
- Expert Hand-to-Hand Combatant (Starline programmed Neo Metal Sonic's copied bio-data of Sonic and Shadow into her body,[8] perfectly emulating the combat profile of Sonic.[3][2] Because of this, she could keep up with Sonic himself in combat,[3] pushing him to his limits and going blow for blow with him to the very end[3])
- Supernatural Willpower
- Immortality (Types 2 & 3; Kit was certain that the Egg Breaker destroyed her, only for her to emerge healthy.[4] Is implied to have recovered from countless other, increasingly dangerous incidents[2])
- Regeneration (At least Low-Mid, likely far higher; To fortify their bodily defenses, Starline researched and developed cellular augmentations out of a repurposed Metal Virus,[2] granting her enhanced resilience and the ability to "heal real fast";[2] with this ability, she near-instantaneously recovered from being punctured and crushed by the Egg Breaker,[4] awaking to scratches and tattered clothing, and she is implied to have recovered from countless other, increasingly dangerous incidents.[2] Her healing ability is possibly comparable to that of the Zombots, who can regenerate lost limbs and chunks of their bodies and heads[10])
- Electro-Magnetism Manipulation (In order to properly emulate Sonic's speed, Starline hardwired the ability of electro-magnetic propulsion into her body[2] — the manipulation of electric energy[3])
- Passive Statistics Amplification (Her electro-magnetic propulsion enables her to accelerate to supersonic speeds[6] and is continuously activated, allowing her to emulate Sonic's speed at all times[2])
- Energy Projection (Surge can utilize her electro-magnetic propulsion offensively, ranging from small blasts capable of setting leaves ablaze[6] to strikes of lightning capable of staggering a Power Core-enhanced Starline[2] and electric bursts powerful enough to completely disable Metal Sonic[5])
- Aura (Whenever her powers are in-use, electromagnetic energy surges around her body,[3] even extending into the surrounding environment[3] and disrupting technology in her vicinity[6])
- Shockwave Generation (By accelerating to supersonic speeds, she can generate a sonic boom intense enough to lift cars into the air[6])
- Weather Manipulation (Can electrify rain clouds to generate a thunderstorm[11])
- Limited Air Manipulation (By running in a circle, she can create a whirlwind powerful enough to balloon a tiny flame into a forest fire[6][7])
- Vehicular Mastery (Able to operate her own Extreme Gear[12][13][14])
- Likely many others (Starline programmed Neo Metal Sonic's copied bio-data of Sonic and Shadow into her body,[8] meaning she would logically possesses his abilities, as the bio-data of characters is shown numerous times to contain their abilities and intelligence.[15][16] Additionally, her body was augmented on the cellular level with a safe version of the Metal Virus[2])
All previous abilities but significantly enhanced — including:
- Statistics Amplification (By absorbing energy, Surge gains an explosion of power,[17] amplifying her pre-existing powers to new heights,[17] boosting her physical abilities[17]—allowing her to effortlessly overpower foes that previously matched her[18]—and sending her body into a perpetual "overdrive", enhancing her physical and mental faculties[17])
- Energy Projection (Through the Wisps's Color Powers, Surge can unleash destructive beams of energy with Cyan Laser,[17] create explosive energy missiles with Orange Rocket,[17] can create defensive blocks of energy with Blue Cube,[18] and can create energy spikes using Pink Spike[19])
- Energy Manipulation & Absorption (The Dynamo Cage is designed to absorb and harness energy from external sources,[17] acting as a conduit for her own electro-magnetic propulsion,[20] blaster fire,[17] a city's electricity,[17] Starline Base Sigma's entire power supply,[19] raw, concentrated Chaos Energy,[19] and the energy of the Wisps,[17] which Surge can uniquely manipulate and weaponize[18] to bolster her own abilities.[18] Conversely, she can redirect her energy into external sources, such as electronic appliances[18])
- Pseudo-Flight & Teleportation (Can traverse the ground[18] and the air at high-speeds by travelling as a bolt of lightning[17])
- Forcefield Creation (Blue Cube creates barrier-like blocks made of energy,[18] which can be used defensively and offensively[17])
- Explosion Manipulation (By discharging the power inside her body, Surge can erupt into an explosion of energy.[17] Can create missiles with Orange Rocket[17])
Surge uses a Bike-type Extreme Gear (Hang On). For a more in-depth look at the mechanics behind Extreme Gear, as well as each specific board and the nature of the subclasses and powers provided, consult this page.
- Technological Flight
- Acrobatics
- And several more as listed in the Extreme Gear page's universal abilities.
Attack Potency: Low Multiverse level (Able to make Metal Sonic reel from an attack and can clash with Sonic. Capable of taking down Super Badniks[4] with some help from Kit. Nearly killed Modern Sonic when aided by Dynamo Cage)[Statistics Values 1], higher with Boost, far higher with Overcharge (Capable of single handedly knocking down Sonic, the Eggstreme Gear and Clutch at the same time; incapacitating the latter)[21][22][23][24]
Speed: Infinite (Tagged Metal Sonic. Moved fast enough to catch Sonic off-guard and took him away[25] faster than Tails could even react despite being in the middle of a conversation. Albeit slower, she can keep up with Sonic in combat[25]), higher with the Spin Dash (Capable of using the Spin Dash, a technique that allowed Sonic, Tails Nine, and Renegade Knuckes to blitz a group of Eggforcers that were initially blitzing them[26]), even higher with Boost (Can use a Boost-like technique[25])
Lifting Strength: At least Multi-Stellar (Can hold Metal Sonic to a standstill[27])
Striking Strength: Low Multiverse level (Traded blows with Sonic[25])
Durability: Low Multiverse level (Held her own against Metal Sonic for several attacks.[27] Took several hits from Sonic and continued to fight)
Stamina: Superhuman (Was only ever shown to be noticeably tired during her fight with Sonic despite her test runs for Starline, only showing impatience)
Range: Standard Melee Range; Several Meters with her electricity
Standard Equipment: Iron rings and Plates to channel electricity
- Optional Equipment: Dynamo Cage, Extreme Gear (Hang-On)
Average (Surge has very little knowledge about the world, as her amnesiac-riddled existence has been dedicated to one goal; killing Sonic)
Extraordinary Genius (Due to her training, Surge has become a highly competent fighter through hundreds of test runs[1] that sharpened her skills in to become as much of a match for Sonic as possible. She often utilizes her speed in similar ways (i.e. performing moves like the Spin Dash and Homing Attack), often either pulling off evasive maneuvers or doubling down on her speed and electricity to get the job done)
Weaknesses: Surge is particularly susceptible to hypnosis. Even if disadvantageous, Surge will face an opponent head-on should her temper and impatience get the better of her. Using Overcharge heavily drains her.
Notable Attacks/Techniques:
- Spin Dash: Like several others, Surge has showcased the ability to perform the Spin Dash.
- Homing Attack: Surge can use the Homing Attack to repeatedly strike one target or hit several that are close enough together for a string of attacks.
