“ | I may have been conceived out there in the endless depths of space... But I was born when the rocket opened on Earth, in America. I'll always cherish the memories Jor-El and Lara gave me... But only as curious mementos of a life that might have been. Krypton bred me, but it was Earth that gave me all I am. All that matters. It was Krypton that made me Superman..... But it was the Earth that makes me human! | „ |
Summary
Superman is one of the most powerful beings on Earth and its greatest hero. Born to the illustrious House of El, Kal-El is one of the last surviving members of his race as his planet was destroyed not long after his birth. He was found and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas. Raised with high moral ideals, he uses his incredible strength, speed, flight and various other superpowers to fight evil and protect the innocent as a symbol of heroism and justice. In his civilian identity he is Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter working for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. Superman is also a founding member of the Justice League of America and a charter member of the Legion of Superheroes in the 30th Century.

Suffered a mutual knockout alongside Death of Superman Doomsday,[140] feeling energy surging through him from reserves of power that he’d never tapped into before,[141] and could harm Titus,[142][143] even when Martian Manhunter couldn't[144][Note 2]) | Varies (His fluctuations in solar energy storage depend on emotional state[145]), usually Galaxy level (Stronger than before.[146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153][154][155] due to absorbing the power of the Eradicator.[156] As he's often considered the physically strongest being on Earth,[157][158][159][160][161] he should superior to characters such as Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner[Note 3]), Low Multiverse level at his peak (Fought and traded blows with Time Trapper Superman-Prime,[162][163] overpowered the pull of Starbreaker alongside Hal Jordan,[164] staggered the Red King, making him yell in pain,[165] and was confident he could fight the Red King for an extended period of time.[166] Partially contributed to the energy of the Zero Hour Big Bang,[167] shattered the boundaries of Space-Time and changed timelines while fighting his Earth-Two counterpart,[168][169][170] fought and took hits from the Entropy Aegis while explicitly stated to be holding back,[171] with the Entropy Aegis being stated to have the power to remake and destroy the universe,[172] damaged Professor Zoom,[173] is comparable or superior to Green Lantern (Hal Jordan),[174] and helped defeat the Anti-Monitor with help from Parallax Hal Jordan, Supergirl (Pre-Crisis) and Flash (Barry Allen) (Pre-Crisis)[175][Note 4]), higher when Sundipped (Destroyed the hard-light constructs and beam tendrils of Warworld,[176] which fatigued versions of Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel and Captain Atom couldn't destroy,[177] with it later adapting to strengthen a hundredfold, with the Entropy Aegis no longer being able to damage it[176])
Speed: Massively FTL+ (Has tagged the likes of Darkseid, as well as Highmaster, who could react to Green Lanterns, and Titus, who could keep up with Martian Manhunter. Superman and Eradicator fought from the Sun to Mercury and back to the sun.[178]) | Massively FTL+ (Comparable to Wonder Woman, and is swifter than Green Lanterns, Mon-El, and Karate Kid. He is skilled in Torquasm Vo, a Kryptonian martial art. Good deductive and leadership skills. He has massive battle experience with all kinds of powerful beings, and is highly resourceful, with his quick thinking saving countless lives on numerous occasions. His mastery over his powers is greater than that of the Kryptonian Military Guild.[206] He was trained in rapidly recognizing and analyzing situations in mere seconds by Batman[207][208])
Standard Tactics: Superman is known for holding back his immense strength due to his kind and good-hearted nature. He vows to never kill or seriously harm, and thus, almost never goes 'all out'.
- Superman admits to holding back against his enemies[209]
- Superman goes through great care not to hurt people, and only goes hard against people who can take it.[210]
- Note: This doesn't mean he goes all-out, but that he'll just go a bit stronger against these guys
- Superman decides he has to be as relentless as Doomsday, implying he wasn't going all out before, when he really should have.[211]
- A "sun drunk" Superman has to actively hold back so he isn't a danger to others[212]
- Superman says he's stronger because he doesn't use his full power[209]
- It's said that Superman could easily crush others with his superspeed, but doesn't because he's a good person and can hold back his powers to insane degrees[213]
- Batman stated that Superman holds back his power and regulates it subconsciously without him even realizing it.[214]
Weaknesses: Kryptonite (various varieties, all with different effects on him), red stellar radiation (absorbing it instead of yellow stellar radiation will cause him to lose his powers), and magic. He will put himself in harm's way to protect innocents.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:
- Kryptonian Physiology: Superman's cellular structure is much more dense, resilient, and biologically more effective than human tissue. He does not possess superhuman strength levels despite his enhanced cellular ability without his cellular structure charged with yellow solar energy. Without such charging, his physical capabilities are identical to a human of his height and weight who engages in regular physical activity. As an alien, he possesses several organs whose functions are not yet disclosed or understood but are believed to be part of or the source of his bio-matrix force field and reclamation aura. Superman's body also stores energy actively within his bio-cellular matrix as an energy pattern that is linked to his body's electromagnetic field. This energy powers most of his electromagnetic capabilities such as flight, heat vision and other "sight"-based abilities while supplementing his physical abilities to superhuman levels.
- Solar Radiation Absorption: As a Kryptonian, his cells function like a super battery, hyper metabolizing specific wavelengths of radiation as fuel to enable living functions and/or superhuman abilities. Different wavelengths of radiation have different effects on Superman's physiology and well being, but his cells cannot absorb or utilize all types of radiation. The wavelength of his home solar system's red sun enables his body to function on an identical level of a healthy human while the Earth's solar radiation in both its raw and filtered state through the Earth's atmosphere acts as fuel to enable all of his powers. Every time Superman uses any of his superhuman abilities, his body expends absorbed sunlight and he is capable of utilizing any of them to various degrees through controlled circumstances. The solar-based radiation of a foreign blue star proved to increase his known abilities under a yellow sun to a higher degree and enabled additional powers. The existence and constant exposure to proven "healthy" radiation sources are not required for him to live and utilize his powers, but prolonged periods without exposure to them and/or utilizing his powers will require Kal-El to recharge in order to live and continue using his powers.
- Heat Vision: Can accurately target things smaller than human beings from orbit, narrow or wide-beam, heat intensity can be greater than the core of the sun, can modulate it to deliver different frequencies and types to best effect his opponent after analyzing them with his sensory powers, can generate enough power to move entire planets.
- Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision: He can see into all of the EM Spectrum. Superman can see and identify radio/television and all broadcast/transmitted frequencies, allowing him to avoid detection through radar or satellite monitoring methods.
- Telescopic Vision: The ability to focus his vision to see something at a great distance, without violating the laws of physics.
- Microscopic Vision: The ability to see extremely small objects and images down to the subatomic level.
- X-Ray Vision: The ability to see through anything except lead. Since it is passive, this ability would not generate harmful radiation in the same manner as a focused projection of hard X-rays.
- Thermal Vision: The ability to see through the heat tracks left by a living being or object.
- Freeze Breath: He can flash freeze opponents with his Super Breath to restrain them.
- Invisibility/Intangibility: Superman can manipulate his atoms to phase through attacks and turn invisible.
- Relativistic Mass Punch: Superman vibrates his body and travels under light speed, so his punch can hit with more force.
- Torquasm-Vo: A Kryptonian psychic discipline that involves the control of one's consciousness, and allows two practitioners to mentally battle one another.
Notes:
- Death implied that the events of Where is Thy Sting really happened,[228] Lois referenced WITS in Infinite Frontier,[229] and Where is Thy Sting makes a reference to a line in an earlier comic where Wally West travels to the end of time, stating that he saw Superman experience the events of the comic, further showcasing it really did happen.[230]
- "Bellowing in pain, Doomsday lashed out and kneed Superman in the chin. Superman stumbled, and the monster pressed on, delivering a slashing left that laid open Superman’s cheek. The Man of Steel could feel the blood flowing again, but even more he felt the energy surging through him. If he had held back earlier that day, he now reached down into reserves of power that he’d never tapped before." - The Death and Life of Superman: A Novel - Chapter 10
- Following Superman's return after his fight with Doomsday: Cyborg Superman rips off a pipe spewing Kryptonite radiation and aims it at Superman. The Eradicator shields Superman from the burst, but it ends up passing through his body, striking Superman. The room is filled with Kryptonite radiation. Superman now emerges from behind Cyborg, taking his cape back and striking the Cyborg with a powerful blow that goes through his body, revealing that the Kryptonite passing through the Eradicator's body had changed and now restored all of his powers.[231] It is later shown that Superman's powers have increased dramatically from this incident.
- Following the encounter with Parasite, Superman was depowered to just before his powers were growing out of control.[232]
- The feat involving Apokolips and New Genesis colliding into Superman[233] was evaluated and deemed inappropriate to use. There are several reasons for this:
- Superman only withstood an extremely small portion of the actual collision.
- There are multiple inconsistencies regarding the sizes of Apokolips and New Genesis in different comic book stories, which makes it hard to determine which version that should be used.
- Superman's own size was automatically massively increased by Boom Tube technology.
- Given the sizes of New Genesis and Apokolips, they would have collided at faster than light speeds, which makes it impossible to calculate the kinetic energy involved.
- The entire "Death of the New Gods" storyline has been considered to be of dubious canonicity.
- Superman's training and fight with Muhammad Ali was canonized in his numerous mentions of the event, despite originating in a Pre-Crisis comic book.
- To illustrate why he is such a great character, please read this comic book segment.
