Jotaro! What you believed to be an evil spirit is a powerful vision, created from your own life energy. Because it appears next to you, that vision is called... a Stand!
Summary
Stands (スタンド Sutando) are a supernatural power unique to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
A Stand is an entity psychically generated by its proprietor, generally referred to as a Stand User (スタンド使い Sutando Tsukai). It is viewed as a physical manifestation of the User's fighting spirit. A Stand generally presents itself as a figure hovering near the user and possesses abilities beyond that of an ordinary human, which, depending on the Stand User, can be wielded for good or evil.
Stand Parameters
Stand Parameters (スタンドパラメータ Sutando Paramēta), or Stand Statistics are six statistics used outside of the story to gauge a Stand's capabilities. Some parameters refer to specific abilities of the Stand, such as in the case of Moody Blues and Whitesnake. They are in order (clockwise from top): Destructive Power, Speed, Range, Stamina, Precision, and Developmental Potential.
The following are determined from these statistics:
- Destructive Power
- Speed
- Range
- Stamina
- Precision
- Developmental Potential
Each statistic is ranked from A to E; though rankings of None and Infinite are also possible. If a rank is Unknown, it will show a question mark (?); this is usually because the Stand or its full capabilities have not yet been revealed in the storyline. Rankings are defined as follows:
A: Very Good (超スゴイ Chō Sugoi)
B: Good (スゴイ Sugoi)
C: Average (人間と同じ Ningen to Onaji, lit. "Comparable to a Human")
D: Poor (ニガテ Nigate)
E: Very Poor (超ニガテ Chō Nigate)
Stand User Abilities
Stand users will have the following:
- Superhuman Reactions: Numerous Stand users have reacted to Stands as fast as their own.
- Enhanced Extrasensory Perception: Stand users are capable of seeing ghosts and souls among some other supernatural forces that are normally otherwise invisible, because their Stands are also ghosts.
- Summoning and Aura (Materialized): Stand users utilize their own spiritual energy to summon their Stand, and by consequence have an aura of their own.
- Supernatural Willpower: Stand users have withstood punishment to their own soul, and are a manifestation of one's will. They are empowered by the user's fighting spirit.
- Soul Manipulation: Stand users manipulate their fighting spirit to attack other stand users, however this is non-combat applicable because it is limited to that soul.
- Telepathy: Stand users can talk telepathically using their Stands.
Some Stand Users get Multiple Selves, as their Stands have personality and can act without a command in order to protect the user. They are: Jotaro Kujo and Star Platinum, Koichi Hirose and Echoes Act: 3, Trish Una and Spice Girl, Guido Mista and Sex Pistols and finally, Giorno Giovanna and Gold Experience Requiem.
Basic Stand Abilities
- Enhanced Incorporeality and Enhanced Invisibility: Stands are the incorporeal manifestations of one's vital energy, and can only be seen by other Stands and Stand Users.
- Selective Intangibility: As a result of its nature, only Stands can interact with stands, as other things can only phase through them. However, it is possible to imbue things with Stand energy.
- Enhanced Extrasensory Perception: Much like their users, Stands can see ghosts and souls.
- Enhanced Non-Physical Interaction: Stands can harm each other, and can interact with ghosts and other stands.
- Flight: Stands can fly through their limited range.
- Aura: Stands can materialize their Aura.
Of course, some Stands don't follow these rules, and they are the exceptions. Stands bounds to objects, or Stands with enough energy can be seen and touched by non Stand Users.
Note: In order to see, touch or sense Stands, the character in question would need some form of enhanced Extrasensory Perception and enhanced Non-Physical Interaction, something above what ghosts can see, sense or touch. This is because not even ghosts or spirts can see or touch Stands, as seen with Reimi Sugimoto's interactions with Heaven's Door. Another instance where this happened, was when Mikitaka could not see Crazy Diamond, but was able to see and interact with Reimi Sugimoto.
Stand Types
Because Stands are varied, there are different types:
- Close-Range Stands or Short-Ranged Stands
- Long-Range Stands
- Automatic Stands
- Phenomenon Stands
Close-Range Stands
Short Types have, usually short range but have a strong attack output and raw stats, generally with a power oriented ability (sometimes called Power-Types) and usually get weaker the further the Stand goes from the user but stronger the closer they go to the user. Most of them usually have:
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics: Close-Range stands are short-ranged, but in turn they have superhuman attributes and generally have A on Destructive Power or Speed.
- Statistics Amplification: Close-Range Stands can increase their physical capabilities while closer to its user, as seen by Josuke Higashikata's Crazy Diamond being able to surpass Red Hot Chili Pepper while close enough to its user, in order to replicate the power and speed of Star Platinum.
Examples: Star Platinum, Crazy Diamond and King Crimson.
Long Range Stands
Also known as a Remote Control Stand. These Stands are defined by a greater-than average range, some Long-Distance Stands being able to go kilometers away from their Users; thus they are typically ranked A or B in Range. Moreover, the User is able to command their movement with good precision. On the other hand, the remaining link between User and Stand means injuring the Stand will damage the User as well and most of these Stands aren't a physical match for other types of Stands. They generally have:
- Enhanced Flight: Their flight range could be tens of meters or kilometers.
Example: Echoes Act 1 and 2 and Hierophant Green.
Automatic Stands
Automatic Stands are all Stands that do not follow their Users' command, but rather, act automatically through preset instructions. They generally have:
- Invulnerability: While they can be defeated, they can't be killed unless the user is killed.
There are several sub-types of automatic Stands.
Far-Distance Autopilot Type (遠隔自動操縦型 Enkaku Jidō Sōjū-gata) Stands can travel long distances from their Users without losing power. In addition to their respective abilities, they will have noteworthy physical abilities, such as great resilience. However, most Far-Distance Autopilot Stands follow simple instructions centered around a single datum, like temperature, and cannot adapt to the situation nor make precise moves.
Examples: Killer Queen's Sheer Heart Attack and Black Sabbath.
Posthumous Stands (死んでるスタンド Shinderu Sutando) are capable of existing long after their User's death, enabling them to act on their own free will. Due to their nature, Dead Stands are automatic-based and, as such, range and damage to their user are irrelevant. They usually have:
- Immortality (Type 7) and Enhanced Invulnerability: Because their users are dead, these types can't be either killed or defeated.
Examples: Notorius B.I.G and Wonder of U
Range Irrelevant Stands
There are a few Stands where the range has very little to do with how they function. Some Integrated Type (一体化型 Ittaika-gata) Stands are applicable here, as well as Stands with space-time related abilities where range simply doesn't apply. Most of the hax abilities are from this type.
Examples: Dio Brando's The World and Diego Brando's THE WORLD time-stop ability, Pucci's Made In Heaven time-acceleration ability and Diavolo's King Crimson time-erase ability.
Weaknesses
Basic Stand Weaknesses
Short-Range and Long-Range Stands
- These Stands are in sync with their users, so if a Stand get hurt, the damage gets transferred to their user. This also applies for death too. However, certain Stands that came from other powers (such as Hermit Purple relating to Hamon, Tusk and Ball Breaker relating to the Spin) are not affected by this.
- Stands are limited to their range, as a result it makes the fight harder for them.
- Because Stands vary from one another, their weaknesses varies too. An example of this is Gold Experience, Sticky Fingers and Crazy Diamond's limitations requiring them to touch the target.
Automatic Stands
- Their unprecise moves makes them easier to fight.
- The Stand User is not aware of what is happening to his or her Stand, thus he or she can't do any movements.
Range Irrelevant Stands
- Their base range can be a problem, while the range of their abilities doesn't matter.
- Example: Star Platinum's range of 2 meters makes Jotaro have to get close to the enemy in order to defeat him, even though his time-stop ability has a irrelevant range.
Trivia
- The strongest normal Stand in raw power/strength is Jotaro Kujo's Star Platinum, as the Stand was stated to be the number one in strength, as well as the "strongest Stand in the world" and "strongest Stand known to man". He is also the fastest and most precise, being stated to be the number one on both.
- From the evolved Stands, Gold Experience Requiem's Return To Zero is the fastest ability in JoJo. His attack power is also greater than all existing Stands.
- Gold Experience Requiem's Stand Parameters can't be comparable to existing Stands or by the measuring rods.
