Summary

Sonic the Hedgehog is the main protagonist of Sega of America's Sonic 1 Promotional Comic.

He is a mysterious traveler who found himself in an underground lab owned by an equally mysterious scientist, Dr. Kintobor. Sonic and Dr. Kintobor soon became fast friends, and remained so long enough for the other critters (Sally Acorn, Johnny Lightfoot and Chirps) to be aware of Dr. Kintobor's scientific capabilities and Sonic's friendship with him.[3] Sonic even "ran" experiments for the Doctor, using his Experimental Supersonic Treadmill that resulted in Sonic's fur turning Blue (Note: It's unknown if the treadmill granted Sonic his speed but it's likely he wanted to show off based on his attitude).

But later, an accident would occur that would change the world to come. Kintobor would spill soda over his machine, resulting in him getting hit with a feedback loop of conceptual evil while clutching a hard-boiled egg. The kind Dr. Kintobor was no longer, only the malicious Dr. Robotnik remained with a thirst for Total World Domination and ending anyone who stands in his way. The evil doctor and his Badnik Transforming Machine would soon capture Sonic's critter friends, and Sonic himself would be next.

Determined, Sonic intends to find the Emeralds to restore Dr. Kintobor's ROCC device and stop his former friend once and for all.

Notable Attacks/Techniques

Natural Abilities

Sonic's natural capabilities.

  • Superhuman Physical Characteristics
    • A surprisingly strong individual, Sonic can sustain the force of his speed and barrel his way through Badniks. At peak health with high stamina, he runs across land, effortlessly jumping on springs, avoiding attacks, and smashing robots without taking a breath. Is even able to swim faster than robotic fish.[10]
Natural Ability Description Example
Superhuman Speed

[2][6]

Sonic uses this speed to smash his enemies quickly in quick successions and pursue threats.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog's most useful natural ability against the doctor. His overwhelming speed. Dr. Kintobor was planning to erase the concept of evil and while celebrating, Sonic the Hedgehog came by. Passing the time with his new friend, Dr. Kintobor casually experiment on Sonic's speed in a test trial. Understanding that Kintobor's science was looking down at him, Sonic showed off his speed faster than he ever ran before and shocked Dr. Kintobor off his feet. For Sonic, he went faster than he knew possible for the first time and his fur became blue.
  • Small Size & Bodily Weaponry
    • Smaller than the human Dr. Kintobor, Sonic's height is somewhat below Kintobor's waistline with Kintobor bending over to address him. His body's backside is covered in quills, useful for wrecking through robots.
  • Possibly De-Transmutation
    • Sonic hits the Badniks with force to transform them back into their original forms.[8] While Sonic states the Critters are trapped inside, the statement could either refer to his friends being trapped inside metallic, colorfully transformed versions of themselves or the Badniks act as containment units. Dr. Robotnik's Badnik Transforming Machine's method of creating his robots are unknown but its assume by the name of the device and the SonicBibleDraft2,[12] it is transmuting Organic beings into Machines.
    • Note: Don't assume the original canon of the Games apply to the Promotional Comic. Sega of America were drastically inventing their own lore when Sonic 1 was coming to the West.

Resistance to:

Resist Description Example
Toxic Sewage

[6]

Didn't suffer the negative effects of swimming in Toxic Sewage, which direct contact with sewage or surfaces contaminated by sewage can result in illnesses such as gastroenteritis. Sonic having his eyes exposed in the water could have caused adverse symptoms, organ damage, or even death, if he wasn't resisting the effects.

Skills

Sonic's usage of his abilities.

Skills Use Example
Acrobatics

[6]

Moving at high speeds, Sonic can easily react with quick and agile maneuvers to avoid incoming obstacles like flames, spike traps, projectiles, and flying Badniks.[13]

EvadingDeathTraps(PromoComic)
Spin Attack

[8][14][13][1]

A move of Sonic the Hedgehog's own making. He curls up into a ball and blast his opponent at high speed, using his sharp quills to better break them up.
Underground Mobility

[15]

The ability to maneuver through the ground without losing momentum.

  • The full extent of Sonic's capabilities using it is unknown. He can blast his way through a mountain with a spin dash using his momentum but he was shown to burrow up into Dr. Kintobor's underground lab[4] without looking for it, implying he has other methods of traversing underground without using his forward momentum.
SonicPromoBurrowing

Blasting through a Mountain

Equipment

An item Sonic held and used in the book.

To recreate the Retro-Orbital Chaos Compressor and stop Dr. Robotnik, Sonic collected a Chaos Emerald.

Item Ability Example
Chaos Emerald

[7]

Simply touching the Emerald transported Sonic from another dimension back to Mobius after Sonic was transported through a Warp Ring. Should instantly make Sonic return if he was sent away to another dimension.

Sega of Japan and Sega of America were known to have widely different lore at the beginning of the franchise. It can't be assumed the original Japanese lore applies to Sega of America's promotional comic.
