Summary

Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu) is the protagonist of the two-episode 1996 Japanese anime OVA series based on Sega's best-selling franchise Sonic the Hedgehog. The series was licensed by ADV Films and was released on September 7, 1999, as a single direct-to-video film in North America as Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.

Not much is known about this version of Sonic. He appears to spend his days with his buddy Tails on a floating island in the Land of the Sky and has connections with the human President. He is on friendly terms with the Treasure Hunting Knuckles and may be in a relationship with the catgirl Sara. He is shown to be a very forgiving and merciful Hedgehog with an attitude, as he dove towards molten lava in an attempt to save his doomed copy. His heroic self is willing to help others even on the chance they might betray him, like his arch enemy, Dr. Robotnik, when his own instinct tells him he shouldn't.

Hero of the Land of the Sky, Sonic the Hedgehog runs towards the camera, ready for another day.

• Acrobatics:
  • Sonic has excellent mobility and movement as he travels at high speed, able to dodge around obstacles and parkour off of platforms and rock formations.
    • Scaling Skyscrapers: Sonic combines his speed and acrobatics to bounce off buildings to gain altitude and run up skyscrapers.

• True Flight:
  • Sonic has flown plenty of times throughout the OVA. Taking down a Crawlton, flying to escape Metal Robotnik's Spike Missiles, having complete control over himself in the air, casually flew over Robotropolis with Knuckles and Tails, and flew over clouds as Hyper Metal Sonic chased him.

• Statistics Amplification:
  • Peel Outs are techniques Sonic preforms to increase his speed to the point of blitzing his pervious speed. The drawback is that he can only preform these techniques while on the ground.
    • Peel Out: Sonic moves his feet to create a circle before blasting forward
    • Super Peel Out: A more advance technique. Sonic spins his feet in an infinite symbol and launches himself forward. This technique matched Hyper Metal Sonic's Revving in combat.

  • Sonic can create afterimages in the heat of battle to fake out his opponent. This works on Hyper Metal Sonic, who is equal in speed with Sonic.

  • Sustained injury from hurting himself on Metal Robotnik and still ran immediately after.
  • During his fight with Hyper Metal Sonic, Sonic sustained injuries that left him struggling to move. Only for a minute or two later for Sonic to continue fighting Metal, using his top speed (the Super Peel Out). Sonic is completely recovered by the end of the film.

  • Sonic dove after Metal without a second thought, laying a few feet from the rising lava. He remained fine being so close to the exposed molten rock while keeping his distance.
