You cannot run, girl. There is nowhere to hide. Give up the dragon…and I’ll make your death swift. [...] You are nothing. Savior of the world? You can’t even save yourself. Gargos thought too highly of your powers. He should have sent one of his little minions to deal with the likes of you. After I’m done with you I’ll slaughter the rest of your family in there. But before I do it, I’ll tell them how you failed to save them.
~ Shadow Jago to Kim Wu[1]

Summary

Shadow Jago is a playable character and a boss introduced in Killer Instinct (2013). Originally, Shadow Jago was the name given to Jago when he was possessed by Omen, who corrupted his appearance and controlled his body, wandering the world seeking those who could prove a threat for his master Gargos, feeding him with Shadow Energy with each victory in the process. Eventually, Jago managed to expel the spirit from his body, gaining new freedom. However, both were surprised when a third entity appeared before them, as a result of the separation. For unknown reasons, the grim warrior had gained independence and was now standing before them. As a being of pure evil and hate, Shadow Jago blindly follows Gargos's orders and is ready to slaughter anyone who opposes his master. His nature and the reasons behind his existence are shrouded in mystery to this day. This dark entity was eventually vanquished by the hands of his good counterpart, at the end of fated battle occurred when the war against Gargos was bringing chaos across the planet.

At some point in time before the invasion, Shadow Jago sought out Tusk and his sword Warg-gram, one of few weapons able to pierce the heart of a Shadow Lord, but the task was proven impossible because of the barbarian's immortality and the magic properties of the sword, which makes it nearly impossible for anyone but Tusk to hold it. Likewise, his second, most notable appearance was the assassination attempt of Kim Wu occurred two years later. The young girl had just obtained her Guardian Spirit Yeo, when Shadow Jago emerged from the darkness and tried to assassinate her. Once again, Gargos's evil deeds didn't have success, as Kim Wu's bold spirit and Yeo's magic allowed the duo defeat their enemy, who was then dragged to the Astral Plane by Hisako. It is unknown if it was Omen or Shadow Jago itself the one in control of the entity during those occasions.

Age: Unknown, a little more than two years at most

Classification: Jago's Shadow-Self, Agent of Gargos

When Shadow Jago was a byproduct of Omen, he could channel Shadow Energy back to the Astral Plane[4] for Gargos to wax in power. Can restore Shadow Energy via Dark Gift), Damage Boost (Via Shadow Surge. Can also use Shadow Energy to increase the properties of his special attacks), Absorption and Power Bestowal (Via Dark Gift), Teleportation and Smoke Manipulation (Via Dark Drift, Dark Demise and other techniques), Portal Creation (Can open portals), Empowerment (Becomes stronger[5] in the Astral Plane), possibly limited Creation (When he came into existence, a shadow version of Jago's monastery was created[6], although it is unknown if Shadow Jago has any control over this ability), Magic and limited Spatial Manipulation (Can perform incantations to close portals), Illusion Creation (Can cast glamours upon himself to mask his appearance)

Attack Potency: At least Wall level+, likely higher (Fought[2] Tusk to a standstill[7], was a considerable threat[1] for Kim Wu and is equal to Jago, whom he has also battled[8] with)

Range: Standard melee range physically, extended melee range with his sword, several meters with Shendokuken and various abilities, likely far higher with Portal Creation and Clairvoyance

Standard Equipment:

  • Saw-like Blade: Jago's Kora turned into a wicked weapon by Omen's influence.
  • Oblivion Shard: An Astral relic whose effect is to erase the memories of the target[7], causing them to collapse and fall into a coma that can last up to at least two years[7].
  • Mask, Vambraces and Knee Guards: Pieces of armor made of metal, likely meant for protection.

Intelligence: Average, likely Gifted in combat (Is just as skilled as Jago in martial arts and swordsmanship, and the two have fought as equals. Added his own innovations to Jago's fighting style, using his powers to create new techniques or adapt those already established. Gargos considers him his best and most trusted agent, sending him to deal with warriors that can represent a threat to his plans. Matched Tusk in combat and was about to kill Kim Wu. Demonstrated some cleverness, such as when he turned off the lights to disorient Kim Wu. Practices magic and knows a few spells)

Weaknesses: None notable

Combat Traits:

  • Gatekeeper: Shadow Jago delivers a straight push kick.
  • Dark Reckoning: Shadow Jago leaps forward and attacks with a wheel kick.
  • Dark Impulse: Shadow Jago disappears in a cloud of black mist[1], then reappears in another location. Shadow Jago can use this move freely, usually while dashing forward or backwards.

Similarly to his counterpart, Shadow Jago's throws consist in two different types of Seoi Nage, performed by grabbing the opponent's arms and throwing them forward or backwards. However, Shadow Jago adds his own innovations to these techniques. Before the opponent touches the ground, Shadow Jago teleports in place, reapparing in a position that allows him to hit them with two vertical slashes, which resemble Jago's Laser Sword.

  • Shendokuken: A corrupted version of Jago's Endokuken. Shadow Jago fires a dark fireball[10], that travels in a straight line. Shadow Jago can also modulate the speed of this projectile as he pleases. The Shendokuken can also be fired in mid-air, and its flames might burn at the same temperature as Jago's Endokuken, which is high enough to instantly incinerate[11] a whole Stalker. Shadow Energy greatly enhances Shadow Jago's firepower, who can now shoot five Shendokukens in a row.
  • Dark Fury: A copy of Jago's Tiger Fury. Shadow Jago leaps into a whirlwind of energized fire, corkscrewing into the air holding his sword in a reverse grip. By using Shadow Energy to enhance this technique, Shadow Jago swirls his sword in his hand and performs a stronger version of Dark Fury.
  • Dark Catastrophe: Shadow Jago uses Dark Impulse to appear in front of the opponent, then performs Dark Fury at a 45 degree angle. Unlike other techniques, Dark Catastrophe can't be turned into a Shadow Move.
  • Dark Drift: Shadow Jago advances with a sliding kick, covering the distance with his opponent and avoiding projectiles that travel in the air. Shadow Jago is skilled enough to control how far he will slide, giving great versatility to this technique. With Shadow Dark Drift Shadow Jago starts teleporting back and forth, kicking the opponent five times.
  • Dark Demise: Shadow Jago performs Dark Impulse to teleport above the opponent and attack with a dive kick. Upon hitting, Shadow Jago performs a backflip and bounces back on his feet. The Shadow version is followed by four roundhouse kicks.

  • Shadow Surge: Shadow Jago possesses the unique ability to perform Surge Moves, special moves enhanced by less Shadow Energy than what would be required to perfom an actual Shadow Move, effectively working as a middle ground.
  • Surge Shendokuken: Shadow Jago hurls a second Shendokuken at an upward angle if on the ground, and at a downward angle if airborne.
  • Surge Dark Fury: Shadow Jago performs this technique twice in a row.
  • Surge Dark Catastrophe: Shadow Jago executes Dark Catastrophe a second time after landing the first one.
  • Surge Dark Drift: Shadow Jago starts sliding, then suddenly teleports behind the opponent and sends them flying on hit.
  • Surge Dark Demise: After landing Dark Demise, Shadow Jago follows up with two low kicks.

  • Dark Gift: Shadow Jago calls forth the power of Gargos for a limited time, summoning a demonic emblem and obtaining a dark aura around himself. He obtains the ability to latch a Dark Tether onto the opponent by hitting them with a Shendokuken or dashing through them with Dark Impulse. Once the tether is attached, Shadow Jago can perform Surge and Shadow moves by spending the opponent's Shadow Energy instead of his own. In this form Shadow Jago is more dangerous than ever, as he is free to go all-out and use many more Shadow moves than normal. However, this is a two-way connection, as the opponent can use Shadow Jago’s Shadow Meter as well. Shadow Jago can also teleport on place to restore part of his and the opponent's Shadow Meter. The Dark Tether can be broken by landing a hit on Shadow Jago, but nothing stops him from attaching another one to the opponent.

  • Annihilation: While Dark Gift is active, Shadow Jago gets access to this new, powerful technique. Shadow Jago unsheats his sword and dashes back and fourth, slashing the opponent's midsection, before sending them flying into the air with an upward palm strike. He unsheates the sword once again, swirling it into his hand and holding it in a reverse grip. Then Shadow Jago follows the opponent into the sky, delivering a flying uppercut with the blade that cuts the opponent vertically. The lifeless victim now crashes on the ground, while Shadow Jago spins on himself and lands nimbly on his feet.
Killer_Instinct,_Shadow_Jago._Reset_into_Annihilation.

Shadow Jago's most powerful technique, a stronger version of Annihilation that doesn't require Dark Gift in order to be performed. This time Shadow Jago begins by delivering countless strikes at blinding speed. The rest of the move is almost the same, but at the end Shadow Jago dives over the grounded opponent and chops away their head with a single slash.

SHADOW_JAGO-_Full_Ultra_Combo_&_Ultimate_Finisher

As a clone, Shadow Jago's fighting style bears many similarities with Jago's. It can defined as a combination of physical strikes and sword slashes, which he alternates for deadly combos and to keep the opponent always at stake. Shadow Jago fights best at mid range, thanks to his kicks and sword, but techniques such as the Shendokuken and the ability to teleport, dash and perform high jumps makes it easy for him to fight from a distance or to quickly get close to the opponent. Just like his counterpart, Shadow Jago isn't afraid of going all out in a battle and cause deep wounds to the enemy, if not outright killing them. He enjoys fighting, with an aggressive approach that puts pressure on the opponent, as he likes to instill despair on his victims and mock them if they don't meet his expectations. However, if he realizes he can't win a battle, he will use the Oblivion Shard to incapacitate the enemy, as he did against Tusk.

  • Martial Arts: Just like Jago, Shadow Jago employs a a style born from unique movements joined by traits of karate, judo, kung-fu and more. Shadow Jago seems to be particularly oriented towards attacks commonly found in muay thai, such as push kicks, knees and elbows. Another unique technique is his signature horse stance, performed while blue electricity sparks from his hands and electrocutes the victim. This power is unique to Shadow Jago, and greatly enhances the effectiveness of his punches and hand strikes. However, just like his counterpart, Shadow Jago mainly attacks with a variety of kicks, since his hands are often occupied wielding his sword or firing Shendokukens.

  • Swordsmanship: Shadow Jago is as good at fighting with the sword as he is at fighting with his body. As previously stated, Shadow Jago mainly uses his arms to swing this dreadful weapon born by Omen's corrupting energies. Despite the size of the weapon, Shadow Jago needs only a single arm to deliver quick and long-reaching slashes, stabbing attacks, uppercut and more, and he even knowns how to use the blade while holding it in a reverse grip. His ability to teleport allows him to skip normal human movements and appear in front or behind the opponent with the sword already unsheated, ready to cut them down, as shown by his throws.
  • Acrobatics: More abilities inherited from Jago. Shadow Jago can perform long and high jumps, spin on himself and get up with a somersault if he gets knocked down. Some notable techniques that demonstrate his capabilities are Dark Fury, Dark Catastrophe and Dark Demise. With such agility, Shadow Jago can sprint and dash without having to build momentum, and is able to use his sword, hands and legs to approach an opponent in the air or dive over them. His blade is notably used to perform a rotating attack that slashes the opponent multiple times like a buzzsaw.

Combos

Shadow Energy is a source of power mainly found in the Astral Plane, but it also exists in limited quantities within the inhabitants of the Mundane Plane. However, only very few people are able to harness and manipulate such energy. Its most basic property is to passively increase one's statistics proportionally to the amount of Shadow Energy they own. Shadow Energy is very malleable and can be used for a variety of purposes, although only expert wielders, such as the Shadow Lords, are able to use its full potential.

Shadow Jago possesses rudimentary knowledge of how to handle Shadow Energy, thus he can only use it to enhance the strength and properties of his Special Moves, turning them into Shadow Moves. Initially these attacks were depicted as marked by a dense and iridescent trail that followed the user, but it was later changed into a purple aura that surrounds the user entirely.

Although it never leaves the user's body under normal conditions, there is an unknown limit to how many times an individual can summon this energy to perform Shadow Moves, before needing to let it recharge, a thing that can also happen in the midst of a battle. The only known downside of emptying one's reserves of Shadow Energy is the inability to perform Shadow Moves, as strength and other statistics don't seem to be affected by this temporary loss.
