Summary

Margrave Roswaal L. Mathers is the head of the noble Mathers family and Lugunica's court magician.

Roswaal was born 400 years prior to the start of the story in the era of Witches, under the name "Altair Mathers". Although he was born into a noble family, he was always afflicted by mysterious illness that left him unable to live happily. He would eventually be visited by the Witch of Greed, Echidna, who immediately recognized his illness as being due to "Magical Release Period"- a time in which beings with vast mana and powerful Ods had to release built up mana to avoid mana poisoning. Echidna would teach Altair magic in order to prevent his mana poisoning, and took the young boy under her wing so that he could fully learn to utilize his great magical talent.

Altair would train under Echidna and become both healthy and powerful, leading to him taking over the Mathers family and becoming the head of the house, continuing the tradition of taking the name "Roswaal", as well as becoming known as the genius magician Roswaal A. Mathers. Roswaal spent a majority of his time in Echidna's Sanctuary alongside Beatrice and Ryuzu Meyers, becoming incredibly close with them and especially becoming like family with Beatrice, the Witch's daughter.

One day, the reason for the creation of Echidna's Sanctuary appeared- the Warlock of Melancholy, Hector, attacked Sanctuary presumably in order to kill Echidna. Roswaal acted as the first line of defense and went to fight Hector, but he was completely brutalized and maimed to the degree that he should have died. Instead he was permanently disabled and had broken his Gate, becoming unable to cast magic. After the incident, he and Beatrice were given a copy of Echidna's Tome of Wisdom by the Witch, a text that guides the owner to their desired future, called a "Gospel" due to lacking a proper name. He'd spend the rest of his life researching within Echidna's Forbidden Library that Beatrice guarded, and mastering a technique to transfer his soul to another vessel- a path that would find success.

Roswaal A. Mathers transferred his soul to his son, possessing his body and becoming Roswaal B. Mathers. Roswaal would continue to train his mind, body, magic, all while choosing suitable partners to create ideal bodies, all while guided by his Gospel to his ultimate goal of reviving the deceased Echidna. He'd also participate in the Demi-Human Civil war to eliminate one of Echidna's failed creations as Roswaal J. Mathers. In the current day Roswaal is Roswaal L. Mathers, the 12th Roswaal and the one who intends to finally fulfill his ultimate goal.

Roswaal gathered people he needed according to his Gospel: the quarter-beast with rare blood, Frederica; the Oni twins, Ram and Rem; the half-elf Royal Candidate, Emilia; and a strange boy with the Authority to go back and redo events, Subaru. Roswaal attempted to corner Subaru and make him obsessed with a single goal like he was, however Subaru won the bet that he'd completely overcome Roswaal's scheme, forcing the magician to submit and whole-heartedly assist the Emilia Camp following the destruction of his Gospel.

Has obsessively held on to to his beliefs for 400 years), Extrasensory Perception (Can sense mana. Range: Tens of Kilometers (Comparable to Echidna. Rem claims he is able to hit the White Whale which reached an altitude equal to the clouds), higher with Altemillion (Caused snow to fall over the Sanctuary)

Standard Equipment:

• Tome of Wisdom: A black book that lists the holder's future, however after the events at the Sanctuary, it was destroyed.

Intelligence: Extraordinary Genius (Roswaal is a genius magician, the likes of which will never be seen again. He has an affinity for every element and is capable of using all magic. Despite only being taught 4 magical elements, on his own he learn not only the other 2 elements, but also how to combine them to get the rainbow element. Can simultaneous cast 3 different spells at once, an insane technique that all but requires three brains to accomplish—and even that is not the true limits of his potential. Successfully achieved soul transference, a technique, which takes everything that makes up a person; soul, memories, experiences, elemental character and destiny, and puts it into another soul. This requires magical genius and tenacity beyond the ability of mortals)

Weaknesses: Altemillion requires magic crystals and an enormous amount of concentration to use, thus he is unable to use sixfold magic and is more vulnerable when casting it.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

• Magical Prowess: Roswaal is compatible with all six magic elements, enabling him to use all forms of magic perfectly. Using this talent, Roswaal is considered to be the best in the kingdom in terms of mana usage, power, and speed, and is recognized to be as strong as an army. However, Roswaal's only flaw is his inability to properly use healing magic.

• Altemillion: Altemillion is Roswaal's weather changing magic which he used to make it snow in Sanctuary. The magic is powerful enough to envelop an area with a radius of 60 km in a raging blizzard.

• Goa: Manifests a blaze of fire to incinerate foes.
  • Ul Goa: A higher tier version of Goa. The user fires a large amount of powerful fire bullets. A powerful flame scatters when the bullets land.
  • Al Goa: A higher tier version of Goa. Manifests a massive blaze of fire, much more powerful that a regular Goa. This is the spell Roswaal is most skilled at.

• El Huma: The user can freeze any liquids around him such as blood.
• El Fura: The user unleash a powerfull gust of wind that create enough force to lift heavy object to the air, or can be used to shoot objects like bullets.
• Jiwald: A Yang Element magic that allows Roswaal to fire heat rays from his fingers. It is a heat-wave blade which burns up, burns away, and eliminates anything it touches. Jiwald is a straight-line attack, which makes it seem like it would have the weakness of being easy to avoid, however the heat ray forcefully smashes into things at the speed of light, attacking straight at its prey.

• Sixfold Magic: Roswaal's trump card which allows him to simultaneously cast 6 different magic attacks at the same time, a technique that can only be described as requiring six brains to perform.

• Fa Jin: A bare-handed technique which allows Roswaal to send his attack as a shockwave through either an object or a body- striking through walls or attacking internal organs.
  • Fa Jin Imbued With Fire Magic: A Fa Jin that utilizes Fire Magic in order to directly attack and scorch the target's internal organs. Roswaal considers this to be lethal for most opponents.
  • Full-Body Fa Jin: A Fa Jin that Roswaal performs with his entire body to increase the surface area of his attack. It is 10 times stronger than a regular Fa Jin.
