Roronoa Zoro w-Shusui Render
You've underestimated me, snow woman. When you thought you couldn't beat me, you should have run. Of course, there are things that I don't wanna cut. But... let me ask you something. Have you ever seen a fierce animal you were sure would never bite? I haven't.
~ Zoro to Monet

Summary

Roronoa Zoro, also known by his epithet “Pirate Hunter”, is the premier swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates and a member of the Monster Trio. Recruited as a mildly notorious bounty hunter (hence his “Pirate Hunter” moniker), he is a monstrously powerful man who doesn’t wield the power of a Devil Fruit, using a unique Santoryu Sword Style in a battle of his own creation, wielding a sword in each hand along with one in the mouth. Zoro mostly drinks and sleeps in his spare time (when he is not busy training to get stronger), but can become such a real demon in battle that many people often wondered why someone of his strength isn't the captain. Whenever he engages in a serious fight, he tends to tie a bandana around his head. Also, he has a horrible sense of direction.

Similar to Luffy’s goal, Zoro wishes to become the greatest swordsman in the world as a promise to his childhood rival Kuina, whom he wanted to win against but never could because she died in an accident. Unlike Luffy, however, he needs only to defeat Dracule “Hawk Eyes” Mihawk, the current greatest swordsman in the world, to do so. He actually meets up with Mihawk fairly early in the story, but failed to land even a single hit and was effortlessly defeated by Mihawk for his trouble. However, the man held back just enough to leave Zoro alive and told him to challenge him again when he was ready.

In a strange twist of events, after the Sabaody Island Incident, he is trained by Mihawk, the adversary he swore he'd defeat someday, for two years to become a stronger swordsman to protect his crew. For giving up his pride for the sake of others impresses Mihawk enough to agree. From his training with him, he finally learned how to turn his swords into Black Blades too (Busoshoku Haki, his specialty) as well learn Kenbunshoku Haki.

Mainly because of his strength and for going alongside Luffy's battles, Zoro is counted as a member of "The Worst Generation" like his captain.

After the time skip and events of Dressrosa, his third and current bounty is 320,000,000 berries.

Capable of sensing the "Breath" of all things, allowing him to know the trajectory of something's movements before it happens as well as it's location despite not being visible to him. By doing so he can determine the speed, power and angle of where he should cut at allowing him to cut objects he otherwise couldn't with strength alone), Regeneration (Low; he lost 5 liters of blood and recovered in 2 days, despite the recovery being diagnosed to take 2 years to recover from), Martial Arts, Accelerated Development (Battle and training; physical stats), Acrobatics, Minor Adaptation (Adapted to the oxygen shortage), Aura, Illusion Creation, Fear Manipulation & Paralysis Inducement (His aura produces an incredible amount of bloodlust, can instill fear into his opponent and cause paralysis. He uses his aura to form tangible illusions), Body Control (Can increase the muscles in his arms at will), Statistics Amplification (Via increasing the muscle mass of his arms to briefly enhance his strength and with Ausra which raises his attacking power and durability), Analytical Prediction (Predicted T-Bones Bird of Prey and multiple attacks from Kaku), Minor Fire Manipulation (Via Flying Dragon: Blaze), Resistance to Curse Manipulation (He was able to overcome a cursed sword only by using his own luck, the same cursed sword that bring bad things and mysterious deaths to the people who carry it), Fire Manipulation and Heat Manipulation (Unaffected by the flames engulfing him), as well as Cold Temperatures, Pain Manipulation (Has an extremely high pain tolerance, able to withstand extensive beatings, impalement's, as well as take on all of the pain and fatigue Luffy endured during the entirety of Thriller Bark despite being severely injured himself... and remain conscious and standing), Minor Resistance to Sleep Manipulation and Poison Manipulation (Was unaffected by the poison and razor blades Sanji put in Zoro's lunch and digested it without any issue. In Wano he ate polluted fish from Wano's rivers and only got a stomachache)

Same as before, Enhanced Smell (Figured out the magistrate was the killer he was being framed for when he smelled blood on him), Technique Mimicry (Copied Kin'emon's Fire-Fox Style), Fire Manipulation (Via Flying Dragon-Blaze and Fire-Fox style. Zoro can cut apart and generate fire), Resistance to Energy Absorption (Took his strength and Haki back after the legendary sword Enma drained it from his arm; changed a coastline with a single swing after a single use)

Attack Potency: Island level (One shot an amped Hyouzou, who is at least 4 times stronger than the one who could take a hit from Gear 2nd Luffy before he overdosed on Energy Steroids. Superior to Gear 3rd Luffy, since he saw Gear 2nd and 3rd combined fight Issho and he thought that he was good enough to take over for him), far higher with Busōshoku Haki (One-shot Killer), even higher with Asura | At least Island level (Zoro was capable of slicing through Scratchmen Apoo's Tonfa which could take many blows from Hybrid X Drake and momentarily knocked him out), far higher with Busōshoku Haki, even higher with Asura

Speed: Possibly Relativistic+ (Blitzed Overdosed Hyouzou. Kept pace with Gear Second Luffy and Fujitora), higher with Shishi Sonson | Possibly Relativistic+ (Speedblitzed Scratchmen Apoo and X Drake), higher with Shishi Sonson

Lifting Strength: Class T (Overpowered Issho's gravity) | At least Class T (Should be stronger than before. Held back a combined attack from Kaido and Big Mom long enough to allow his allies to dodge the attack's otherwise inescapable attack radius)

Striking Strength: Island Class, far higher with Busōshoku Haki, even higher with Asura | At least Island Class, far higher with Busōshoku Haki, even higher with Asura

Durability: Island level (Can block hits from those who can match his AP. Took fairly minor damage from Issho's gravity attacks which could overpower Gear 2nd + 3rd Luffy), far higher with Busōshoku Haki, even higher with Asura | At least Island level (Scaling from his attack potency and that he is capable of taking hits from characters near this level), far higher with Busōshoku Haki, even higher with Asura

Stamina: Immense, was able to withstand Kuma's Ursus Shock and get up only moments after, in conjunction with this and other beatings he took in the length of the battle against Oz, he also shouldered the strain and fatigue the shadows and Gears had put on Luffy's body (who had fallen asleep by then, as is his custom once he defeats the main villain of the arc) and still managed to remain standing afterward and survive long enough for Chopper to see to his wounds.

Range: Extended melee range with swords, hundreds of meters with ranged slashes | Extended melee range with swords, Tens of Kilometers with Enma's ranged slashes

Standard Equipment: His three katanas;

  • Meito; Wado Ichimonji: One of the 21 Great Grade Meito. Forged by the legendary Wano swordsmith Shimotsuki Kozaburo and previously owned by his granddaughter and Zoro's friend Kuina; given to Zoro 11 years ago by Kuina's father Koushirou after her untimely death. The only one of Zoro's swords that did not shatter when Zoro first clashed with Mihawk's Supreme Grade sword Yoru.
  • Meito; Sandai Kitetsu: A Grade Meito; it is said to be "cursed" and will bring great misfortune upon its owner. Forged by the great Wano swordsmith Tenguyama Hitetsu and given to Zoro two years ago in Loguetown by the arms dealer Ipponmatsu.
  • Meito; Shusui: One of the 21 Great Grade Meito and a powerful Black Blade. Famously wielded by the legendary samurai Ryuma and a treasured heirloom in all of Wano Country, it was stolen along with Ryuma's body by Gecko Moria and used by Ryuma's corpse when it became animated into a zombie. Ryuma bestowed it to Zoro after being defeated by the swordsman on Thriller Bark two years ago, and Zoro utilized it as a replacement for Yubashiri. The sword was stolen by Gyukimaru in Wano Country two years later and returned to Ryuma's grave, where Zoro let it remain in exchange for Enma at Hiyori's behest.

Same as before with the exception of Shusui, which was replaced with:

  • Meito; Enma: One of the 21 Great Grade Meito. Also forged by Shimotsuki Kozaburo and was originally wielded by the legendary samurai, Kozuki Oden. Oden's daughter, Kozuki Hiyori who inherited Enma bestowed it to Zoro under the promise that he return Shusui to Ryuma's grave. Until the Onigashima Raid in the Wano Country Arc, it was one of the two swords to cut Kaido of the Four Emperors and give him his one scar. Enma has the special trait of drawing out large amounts of the wielder's Ryou.

Intelligence: Combat genius. Zoro is a combative genius, having had trained since he was a child along his best friend Kuina, sometime after Kuina died Zoro created an entirely new type of style, called Santoryu which is a style that's exclusive and unique to Zoro. Zoro is also capable of utilizing both Ittoryu and Nitoryu, and another unique style called No-Sword style, as the name suggest Zoro is capable of fighting without weapons, revolving around throws and changing the trajectory of his opponents momentum, allowing Zoro to fling his opponents at one another. Zoro showcases excellent growth and development at a very fast rate, at times even improves notably in the middle of battle, such as when he learned to cut Daz Bones. An analytical and adept fighter (quick to grasp the rhythm of battle and applying himself accordingly to gain benefit by the developments, Zoro is able to analyze his opponents skill, attack patterns and timing in order to create extremely effective countermeasures. A man of canny tactical ability (has on more than one occasion pulled through with a victory with smart thinking, such as luring opponents into traps.) able to predict the opponent's movements even in situations when he has enough time to give one hit. After being trained by Dracule Mihawk for 2 years Zoro's skill has increased drastically, to where he can utilize the Swordsmen Desire on all of his moves and can copy techniques after seeing them be used such as when he copied Kino'mon's Kitsunebi-ryu, a style that was unique to Kino'mon himself.

Weaknesses: Zoro has a very poor sense of direction (i.e. climbing up buildings when told to go north and getting lost in a straight hallway).

Notable Attacks/Techniques

To see the full list of techniques click here.

Haki: There are normally two types of Haki regular people can tap into: the Kenbunshoku Haki which allows individuals to sense the presence of others, and Busōshoku Haki which allows individuals to create an invisible armor around them. There is however a third type of Haki, Haōshoku Haki, that only a few individuals can use. Zoro is one of these people.

  • Busōshoku Haki (Color of Armaments): Zoro is a specialized user of Busoshoku, displaying Advanced levels of application with Mighty Blade Swordsmanship. capable of using Busoshoku: Koka on himself and his weapons and being able to cover a large portion of his body with haki at once on a whim. The durability of his haki prevented his swords from suffering a single scratch after slicing through Pica's statue several times, and Pica's Busoshoku defense. In the Wano Country Arc Zoro's the only swordsman to tame the sword Enma other than Kozuki Oden, the sword would drain any normal swordsman's Haki leaving them as a husk.
    • Busōshoku: Goken (Color of Armaments: Mighty Blade): Zoro can utilize an application of Armament Haki known as Mighty Blade Swordsmanship which allows him with his swords to cut through the thickest steel when he wishes and at the same time for it not the cut the thinnest of paper. To do this he senses the "Breath" of what he wishes to cut or not cut. When sensing the "Breath" of something he can know the trajectory of it's movement before it happens as well as it's location despite not being visible to him. By doing so he can determine the speed, power and angle of where he should cut. Then by conveying his will into his sword he it allows him to achieve his desire to cut through things he otherwise couldn't with strength alone.
  • Haōshoku Haki (Color of the Conquering King): Zoro is unknowningly capable of imbuing his Haoshoku Haki into his swords when using Kyutoryu, which is an ability only a few powerful individuals are capable off. This imbuement allows him to dramatically increase his attack power as a supplement to his natural physical strength and Busoshoku Haki. He was first noted to have used it by Kaido after the Emperor was struck by Zoro's Kyutoryu attack which was powerful enough to inflict a permanent scar on him. Currently it's unknown if Zoro can access it at will with all his attacks or even if he can display more basic applications of Haoshoku Haki.
  • Kenbunshoku Haki (Color of Observation or Mantra): Zoro has displayed Proficient application of this power, being able to sense the presence of the tonnatta's when others with Kenbunshoku failed to do so and matched the sensory capabilities of those on this level. Is able to see briefly into the future to defend against attacks and is able to sense how powerful others are.

Santōryū (三刀流, literally meaning Three Sword/Blade Style, Dub; Three Swords Style) is a style of sword fighting where the practitioner wields three Katana; one in each hand and one in the mouth. There are many different techniques for this sword style, including high speed attacks, direct hit attacks, and compressed air projectile attacks. Roronoa Zoro is the world-famous swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates who created this style. Zoro can use three swords, two swords, and one sword style techniques. When he uses three swords, the third one (usually the Wado Ichimonji) is placed in his mouth. While using Santoryu, Zoro has a tendency to hold his left hand blade with a "reverse grip", in which the blade protrudes from the bottom of his hand and points away from the opponent. This is likely done to increase the versatility of his attacks, as holding the blade in this fashion allows him to deliver multiple cuts from a variety of angles. A few examples are during his battle with Pica, when he blocked Pica's strike on the Fighting Bull, when he uses "Ichidai Sanzen Daisen Sekai", and when he uses "Sanzen Sekai". Several of his attack names are actually puns due to the way some of the Japanese words are combined together. When these words are pronounced together, they can sound like a completely different Japanese word, often referring to cuisine in general, and to sushi in many specific cases. Also, while Zoro is agnostic, some of his attacks have religious references to them. Many of his attacks before and after the timeskip also incorporate animal themes (gorilla, dragon, lion, bull, etc.).

  • Santoryu Ogi: Rokudo no Tsuji (三刀流奥義 六道の辻 Santōryū Ōgi: Rokudō no Tsuji?, literally meaning "Three Sword/Blade Style Secret Skill: Crossroad of Six Paths"): An alternative secret technique he developed after two years of training with Mihawk. Zoro manages to bend his body and swing the swords in the form of an inverted "S" shape while performing a vertical spin, slashing the opponent six times simultaneously so fast that he did not seem to move at all. It was first used against the Kraken, to cut one of its tentacles and divide it into six pieces. In the video game One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World, this technique involves six repeated slashes, ending with a vertical spin. In the FUNimation subs and dub, it is called Three-Sword Style technique: Crossing the Six Paths, while in the VIZ manga it's Three Sword Style Crossing the Six Paths.

  • Kokujo: O Tatsumaki (黒縄・大龍巻 Kokujō: Ō Tatsu Maki?, literally meaning "Kalasutra: Great Dragon Twister"): A much stronger and more effective version of "Tatsu Maki", where Zoro performs the same action. He spins to create a dragon-like tornado that both slashes and blows away the targets, but the attack keeps going like an actual whirlwind and cuts up anyone who gets caught in it. While the old version only gave the victims small cuts and was able to break a Tekkai (like Kaku's) at its full potential, this new version seems to be able to cut through thick steel with ease. It was first used against the New Fish-Man Pirates. According to Zoro, the whirlwind will not cease until its targets are sent to hell, a befitting description of the technique's name, as "Kokujo" is Japanese for Kalasutra, one of the eight levels of hot Naraka (hell) in Buddhism. In the anime, after his introduction, the dragon figure looks like Momonosuke's dragon form. In the VIZ manga, it is called Three Sword Style Black Rope Dragon Twister. In the FUNimation subs, it is called Black Rope Dragon Twister, and in the FUNimation dub of Film Gold, it is called Black Rope Great Tatsu Maki (as in all of these cases, "kokujo" literally translates to "black cord/straw rope").

  • Rengoku Oni Giri (煉獄鬼斬り Rengoku Oni Giri?, literally meaning "Purgatory Ogre Cutter"): A much stronger version of "Oni Giri", where Zoro still faces away from the opponent and waits for them to come. He then turns around and leaps towards the attacking opponent. This may be a way to make his already lightning-fast triple-slash even more sudden. The effect of this attack leaves an X-shaped stream of blood and generates a powerful shockwave that destroys the surroundings. While the old version could break Hachi's six swords, this new version can easily break the eight swords of Hyouzou (a swordsman Hachi was not able to defeat since childhood) who was extremely doped with Energy Steroids. It was first used to defeat Hyouzou. In the VIZ manga and FUNimation subs and dub, this is called Purgatory Onigiri.

  • Ul-Tora Gari (極虎狩りウルトラがり Uru Tora Gari?, literally meaning "Extreme/Polar Tiger Hunting"): A much stronger version of "Tora Gari", where Zoro does the same movements, he puts his hand swords over his mouth blade and swing them forth a forward descending slash with them. The aura generated by Zoro seems to be the same as the original Tora Gari, the aura of a tiger's head. While the original version was able to withstand against powerful human enemies like the Nyaban Brothers or Mr. 1, this enhanced version is able to match the strength of a dragon. It was first seen used against the Punk Hazard dragon. In the VIZ manga and the FUNimation subs, this is called Ultra Tiger Hunt, and in the FUNimation dub of Film Gold, it is called Ultra Tiger Trap.
  • Senhachiju Pound Ho (千八十煩悩ポンド鳳 Senhachijū Pondo Hō?, literally meaning "1080 Pound Cannon"): A much stronger and powerful version of "108 Pound Ho", where Zoro does the same exact movements as before, holding one of his swords horizontally above the shoulder of his sword arm, and then performs a circular swing that launches the air compressed projectile spiraling towards the target. This new stronger version possesses the ability to cut through a large stone wall (in this case, Pica). The name implies it is ten times as strong as the previous version. This was first used against Pica. In the VIZ Media this is called 1080 Pound Phoenix and in the FUNimation subs, this is called Ten Thousand and Eighty Caliber Phoenix.
  • Santoryu Ogi: Ichidai Sanzen, Daisen Sekai (三刀流奥義 一大・三千・大千・世界 Santōryū Ōgi: Ichidai Sanzen Daisen Sekai?, literally meaning "Three Sword/Blade Style Secret Skill: Great Three Thousand Great Thousand Worlds"): An enhanced version of "Sanzen Sekai". Zoro delivers massive slashes to his opponent one after another. This technique can be done airborne and is capable of cutting through a large amount of solid stone with ease. This was first used against Pica, slashing several times at his giant stone body to lure him out and defeat him with the final slash of the move. When Zoro used this technique he used Haki on his swords to make them more durable and the attack even stronger. In the Viz manga and FUNimation subs and dub, this is called Billion-fold World Trichiliocosm.

Nitōryū (二刀流, literally meaning Two Sword/Blade Style): Nitoryu is another related sword/blade-style that Roronoa Zoro developed over the course of his journey, when in situations where his techniques have had to adapt for one reason or another. These are the attacks he uses with two swords. Nitoryu was also Zoro's original fighting style when he began to learn how to wield a sword, before accepting Kuina's sword and practicing Santoryu.

  • Nigiri: Toro Samon (弐斬り 登楼砂紋 Nigiri: Tōrō Samon?, literally meaning "Two Cutter: Climbing Tower Sand Drawing"): A combination of three former techniques: Nigiri, Toro, Samon. Zoro uses two swords in an upward diagonal slash to send a double air-based projectile attack that cuts his opponent. This was first seen being used against Basil Hawkins.
  • Nanahyakuniju Pound Ho (七百二十煩悩ポンド鳳 Nanahyakunijū Pondo Hō?, kanji meaning "Feng of 720 Kleshas"; furigana meaning "720 Pound Phoenix/Cannon"): A more powerful version of the 72 Pound Cannon. Holding his two swords horizontally above the shoulder, Zoro then performs a circular swing that launches two air compressed projectiles spiraling towards the target. The attack was first seen being used against Kurozumi Orochi, though it was deflected by Kyoshiro.

Ittōryū (一刀流, literally meaning One Sword/Blade Style): Over the course of his journey, Roronoa Zoro has been in situations where his techniques have had to adapt for one reason or another. In addition to his primary fighting style, he has several other related fighting styles that form the greater part of his Santoryu fighting abilities. Ittoryu is one of them. These are the attacks he uses with one sword. As Zoro is left-handed, his Ittoryu techniques have nearly always been executed with his left hand. He usually uses Wado Ichimonji for them, but after the timeskip he seems to be proficient in using each of his three swords for his one-sword techniques. He mainly fights with one sword when not fighting seriously or when he is using a specialized cutting technique. Early in the series (when Sham stole two of his swords and Zoro had to fight him and Buchi with just one), Zoro himself claims that he is "not that good at one-sword techniques". However, over time, he seems to have worked on this weakness and becomes proficient with this style. In fact, most of his Ittoryu techniques are very powerful finishing techniques.

  • Yakkodori (厄港鳥 Yakkōdori?, literally meaning "Disaster Harbor Bird", Dub; Bird Dance (VIZ manga and FUNimation subs)): Zoro launches from his sword a crescent moon-like projectile of compressed air to the opponent with great speed, similar to 36 Pound Cannon. It was first seen used against Hody Jones. It was powerful enough to critically injure one of Hody's subordinates whom he used as a shield.
  • Sanbyakurokuju Pound Ho (三百六十煩悩ポンド鳳 Sanbyakurokujū Pondo Hō?, literally meaning "360 Pound Cannon" or "Feng of 360 Kleshas"): Zoro delivers a stronger version of his 36 Pound Cannon, which is presumably 10 times stronger than the original. It was first seen used against a big fish the Straw Hat Pirates caught in their voyage to the New World.
  • Ittoryu Iai: Shi Shishi Sonson (一刀流 「居合」 死・獅子歌歌 Ittōryū Iai: Shi-Shishi Sonson?, literally meaning "One Sword/Blade Style Re-sheath: "Death-Lion's Song"): A stronger version of his original "Ittoryu Iai: Shishi Sonson", where Zoro swings his sword in a very quick and powerful unsheathing move to slice his opponent; the reverse grip is still used, though Zoro no longer draws his sword from beside-and-over his head, and instead draws it normally from one of his hips. This attack is strong enough to easily decapitate a legendary beast like a Dragon. It was first shown to decapitate the Punk Hazard dwelling dragon; the way Zoro does it is mainly through leaping up into the air with either his own strength (or with outside components such as Usopp's assistance), then uses his mouth's sword to slice up his target in a spiraling wind. The version of that said technique was used in midair in that case (where Zoro moves forward a distance through the air). In the VIZ manga and Funimation dub of Film Gold, this is called Iai Death Lion Song but in the FUNimation subs, it is called Lion Strike. In the English localization of both One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, it is called Death Lion Song.
Zoro dragonslayer

Ittoryu Iai: Shi Shishi Sonson (One Sword Style Draw and Resheath Technique: Lion's Song of Death)

  • Daishinkan (大辰撼 Daishinkan?, literally meaning "Great Dragon Shock"): First used as a finisher move against Monet, Daishinkan consists of Zoro running towards his opponent with Shusui held outstretched in one arm. He then executes a two handed overhead swing used to split his opponent into two from the top down. The power of the move is such that even after cutting through Monet's snow body, the attack still resulted in a powerful shockwave that cut through the floor many meters ahead of him. In the Viz manga, this is called Dragon Quake and in the FUNimation subs, this is called Great Dragon Shock.
  • Baki (馬鬼バキ Baki?, literally meaning "Horse Ogre"): After raising his sword above his head, Zoro delivers a powerful vertical slice to his opponent, usually at an angle along with not being as exaggerated as Daishinkan. This attack can easily slice through solid stone. It was first used to counter Pica's Bitestone.
  • Hiryu: Kaen (飛竜火焔 Hiryū: Kaen?, literally meaning "Flying Dragon: Fire Blaze"): Using one sword wielded in his left hand with his right hand gripping his left wrist for support (or vice-versa), Zoro jumps high up into the air and slashes his opponent. After slashing them, Zoro's opponent then bursts into flames (in the anime, the color of the fire is blue instead) from where they were slashed. This was first seen being used against Ryuma. During his Battle on Onigashima, Zoro used a much stronger variation of this attack alongside Enma, strengthened using Busoshoku Haki, releasing a "Strange Haki" from it; generating a black-flame like aura, which was strong enough for Big Mom to worn Kaido to avoid it. Although, the attack missed, he sliced off one of the Skull Dome's horns. The animal or creature that usually accompanies Zoro in the background when performing powerful techniques is an occidental dragon. The dragon bares an uncanny resemblance to the dragon killed by Ryuma the King from Oda's earlier work, Monsters. The scene where Zoro slashes Ryuma with this technique also resembles the scene from Monsters, in which Ryuma slays the dragon. In the VIZ manga and FUNimation dub, this is called Flying Dragon Blaze, a literal translation of the original name. The kanji "kaen" can also be written as "火炎" (lit. fire flame) instead.

Kyutoryu (九刀流, literally meaning "Nine Swords Style") is the most extreme application of Zoro's spirit projection abilities. With sufficient anger, a dark aura surrounds him as two full apparitions of his body appear on the sides of his real one, giving him the essence of nine swords. Despite its seemingly purely spiritual nature, Zoro's offense and defense increases drastically, letting him disperse Kaku's Amane Dachi, his strongest Rankyaku and cut him several times in an instant. This form is used very rarely in canon, having been shown against Kaku on Enies Lobby and later against a Pacifista on Sabaody. It was used for the first time after the timeskip against Kaido alongside Busoshoku Haki, which was powerful enough to inflict a permenant scar on him. According to the Emperor, Haoshoku Haki was also involved in it, however, Zoro wasn't aware of this fact himself.

  • Kiki Kyutoryu: Ashura (鬼気 九刀流 阿修羅 Kiki Kyūtōryū: Ashura?, literally meaning "Ghastly Nine Sword/Blade Style: Asura"): The basis for Kyutoryu. Zoro, with his Wado Ichimonji in his mouth and his other two blades held out in front of him, creates an illusion born of his "spirit" (気迫 kihaku?), according to Kaku. To onlookers, it appears as if Zoro gains an additional pair of heads and four more arms, all wielding duplicates of his swords—each appearing twice more, for nine swords total. At the same time, an indistinct, six-armed, asura-like silhouette forms behind Zoro, the same entity he comes to resemble, described by Kaku as a "three-faced, six-armed demon god" (三面六手の鬼神 sanmen-rokushu no kishin?). The anime further adds to the first-seen activation of Asura: Zoro, angered by Kaku, had a dark aura begin surrounding him, expanding several meters around where he stood and causing a swirling gust to form. "Ashura" (阿修羅?) is the Japanese term for "asura", a class of demons/demigods from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. In the Viz manga, the technique is called Demon Aura Nine Sword Style: Asura and, in the FUNimation sub and dub, the name is Demon Aura Nine-Sword Style Asura.
    • Ashura: Ichibugin (阿修羅 弌霧銀 Ashura: Ichibugin?, literally meaning "Asura: One Mist Silver"): The first derivate Kyutoryu attack that is seen, used by Zoro to finish off Kaku. Zoro, holding his swords so that the blades are pointing toward the enemy, leaps toward them at great speeds, powerfully slashing them with all "nine" of his swords at once and ending up behind the enemy's back, holding his blades in a manner that makes them look fanned out. The attack was strong enough to disperse Kaku's Rankyaku "Amane Dachi"—his strongest attack—turning the massive slash wave into "mist" (a nod to the attack's name) before slicing up Kaku in his human-giraffe form so thoroughly as to defeat him. The technique's name is a pun on "ichibugin" (一分銀?), meaning "a silver quarter ryō". In the Viz Manga and FUNimation dub, the attack is called Asura: Silver Mist, and in the English dub of the game One Piece: Unlimited Cruise it is called Asura Ichibugin. In the Wii video games, the "Unlimited" series, and Gigant Battle, this move does not see Zoro charging against the opponent, instead producing a longer-ranged, expanding shockwave.
    • Ashura: Makyusen (阿修羅 魔九閃 Ashura: Makyūsen?, literally meaning "Asura: Demonic Nine Flashes"): An attack similar to Ichibugin, where Zoro in his "Asura" state approaches the enemy to consequently slice them up with his nine swords, before ending up in a stance that has the blades resemble a wheel shape. The attack was first seen in use against the Pacifista PX-4, breaking through its harder-than-steel armoring to draw blood from the cyborg. In the anime, the game Unlimited Cruise, and the Pirate Warriors games, the move has Zoro perform a rotatory motion that is not observed in the manga. In the Viz manga, the technique is called Demon Nine Flashes while in the in the FUNimation sub of the anime, it is called Asura's Nine Lightning Strikes.
    • Ashura Bakkei: Moja no Tawamure (阿修羅 抜剣 亡 者 戯 Ashura Bakkei: Mōja no Tawamure?, literally meaning "Asura Sword-Drawing: Jest of the Dead"): A powerful Kyutoryu technique that may involve Haoshoku Haki, speculated by Kaido. Zoro holds Enma out before him, horizontally in his right hand, his other swords held in his left hand and mouth as usual, entering the "Asura" state, with the silhouette behind him clasping two of its six hands. Haki begins emanating from Zoro as he imbues his blades with it, turning them black. He then, readying his blades, moves past his opponent in a flash, cutting them with incredible force. The attack was first used on Kaido, with Zoro putting all his remaining strength into the slash. It proved strong enough to significantly injure the Emperor, giving him a large, bloody gash across his front torso; Kaido, while remaining on his feet, acknowledged that the blow would leave a scar (which would make it the second technique ever to give Kaido a permanant scar). The attack's name references Jigoku-bakkei Mōja no Tawamure (地獄八景亡者戯? "The Eight Scenes of Hell, Jest of the Dead"), a Kamigata Rakugo play from the Edo period. Instead of the usual "hakkei" (八景?), said kanji are read "bakkei", with the name of this attack using "Bakkei" (抜剣? literally meaning "Drawing One's Sword", though correctly read "Bakken") to play on the pronunciation. Unlike previous Kyutoryu uses, the kanji for "Asura" are accompanied by hiragana, not katakana. The Viz Manga calls the attack Asura: Blades Drawn Dead Man's Game.

Kitsunebi-ryu (狐火流, literally meaning "Fox-Fire Style"): During the battle against Kaido and Big Mom, Zoro has proven to be capable of utilizing Kitsunebi-ryu, a sword style employed by the samurai and leader of the Nine Red Scabbard, Kin'emon, which allows one to cut through fire. Using this, he could cut through Big Mom's sun Homie, Prometheus. Zoro has noted that he "stole" it from Kin'emon, meaning that he learned it through observing him.

  • Homura Saki (焔裂き Homura Saki?, literally meaning "Flame Split"): Zoro uses his sword to slice an incoming fire attacks Zoro uses this technique to split the homie Prometheus in half. In the VIZ manga, this is called Blaze Slice, and later Flame-Rend. In the Funimation sub, this is called Flame Split.
    • Homura Saki: Rokudo no Tsuji (焔裂き 六道の辻 Homura Saki: Rokudō no Tsuji?, literally meaning "Flame Split: Crossing of the Six Paths"): Using Santoryu's Rokudo no Tsuji and Homura Saki together, Zoro continuously cuts flames into several small pieces within seconds. It was first used against Prometheus, rendering it weakened for a considerable time by increasing the effort it needed to reform.
