Summary
Planeswalkers are extremely rare beings even within the The Multiverse of Magic: The Gathering which contains a boundless expanse of worlds within it called planes. For the most part these planes of existence and reality are all the people who live within them will ever know, having no knowledge of the worlds beyond their own, nor aware of the fact their universes are suspended in the Aether Void known as The Blind Eternities. However rarely one person out of a million others is born with the potential to travel between these planes of existence. These are the people who are blessed with something called a Spark. Only a fraction of the millions who have a spark will ever awaken it, whether it be through a traumatic event, crisis or realization. However once one does, they become a being known as a Planeswalker.
Before The Mending in which the entire Multiverse and the Metaphysical properties of the sparks were changed, they were small infinities which derived from The Blind Eternities larger infinity. They allowed Planeswalkers to become God-Like being with infinite power, though presently that is no longer the case.
Oldwalkers
Before The Mending, Planeswalkers where also known as Oldwalkers. Godlike beings who transcended their plane of existence. They were practically unkillable due to their Immortality and had infinite power at their disposal.
Abilities
- Abstract Existence (Type 1; When you first become a Oldwalker and your spark ignites, you become one with the Universe itself[1])
- Large Size (Type 8; When you first become an Oldwalker and your spark ignites, you become one with the Universe itself[1])
- Magic (Oldwalkers in general had an endless supply of magical power at their disposal, provided by their sparks they had unlimited arcane energy which was completely inexhaustible. They are constantly referred to as beings who had access to infinite power[2][3][4])
- Invulnerability (As long as they don't lose focus, Oldwalkers were indestructible. This is clarified to be true in future novels, only being hurt if distracted or fighting another Oldwalker[5][6])
- Immortality (Type 1; Oldwalkers are Immortal, with the passage of time having no meaning to them. Type 2; Oldwalkers are capable of surviving after their bodies and spirits are disintegrated, having their body two dimensional and being decapitated and dismembered. Type 3; Powerful Oldwalkers like Nicol Bolas can return from having their Mind, Body & Spirit destroyed and lost, existing only as will, outside of existence, everything real and imaginary, time and space. Type 4; Oldwalkers could die and return to life as they are beings of mind and power. Type 8; One becomes a Planeswalker when their spark awakens. That same spark gives them their power, immortality and makes them what they are[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14])
- Incorporeality (An Oldwalker being is simply a projection of their mind which they can rebuild as they wish[15])
- Avatar Creation (An Oldwalker creates their bodies simply to interact with the world[16])
- Regeneration (Low-Godly; An Oldwalkers being is formed by their mind which is infinite and their bodies can be rebuilt and healed at will. Even when their physical body and spirit are disintegrated and mind are scrambled they would be able to recover[17][18])
- Self-Sustenance (Type 1, 2 & 3; Oldwalkers do not need to sleep, breathe or even eat and drink. They do it for either pleasantries or to sort through their thoughts[19])
- Shapeshifting (Oldwalkers could control the shape of their being at will[20])
- Dimensional Travel (Oldwalkers with a thought can travel to different worlds. Planes & Worlds are all exist within their own Universe separated by walls of reality and when Planeswalkers travel between them they are tearing open this reality[21][22][23])
- BFR (Even someone who just became an Oldwalker can take others with them into The Blind Eternities[24])
- Flight (Planeswalkers are capable of flying[25])
- Enhanced Senses (Planewalkers have preternatural senses that automatically detect people's presence as long as they're not distracted. They can sense if someone had changed their form or even sense energy and beings made out of it. Their senses are also capable of detecting defenses, magic and power[26][27][28][29][30][31])
- Telepathy (Oldwalkers could comprehend thoughts without the need to speak bypassing language barriers. Because of this they can read your mind, thoughts and memory alike[32][33])
- Telekinesis (Oldwalkers seemed to have the ability to use Telekinesis with no spells required[34])
- Non-Physical Interaction (Oldwalkers & Planeswalkers can see and interact with things such as Ghosts, Souls, Gods, Elementals, Mana, Embodiments and other Planewalkers essence and minds, despite Oldwalkers being incorporeal and abstract existences. They are even stated to be capable of interacting with the The Weaver King who is a shadow creature, these beings have NEP Type 3, existing in limbo between existence and nonexistence[35][36])
- Void Manipulation (Oldwalkers could bend The Blind Eternities to their will[37])
- Plane Manipulation (Oldwalkers could create their own Artificial Planes with each capable of being entirely different[38][39])
- Creation (Oldwalkers can simply create things out of Aether alone with a single thought.[40])
Resistances
- Void Manipulation (The Blind Eternities is described as a 'Space' between planes, constantly called chaotic and logic-defying while being filled with raw Aether. It is a great void that has currents of energy and magic strong enough to comprise the foundation of the multiverse. The destruction it brings is so potent that it's capable of killing Ghosts, destroying mind, body, and soul as well as erasing all memory of your existence from reality[41][42][43][44])
- Space-Time Manipulation (Travelling through The Blind Eternities means pushing through tides of time, the slopes of tomorrows that have already passed and endless moments. Even the slightest effects of The Blind Eternities can cause Spatial Contortions. The Blind Eternities are described as being everywhere and nowhere, having no concepts of direction or distance, nor following any other conventional concepts making it impossible to comprehend. It's so inconceivable that Planeswalkers view it as a place despite it not being one. Oldwalkers equal Nicol Bolas should be able to break free of time and space with no issues. This is because Oldwalkers can simply overrule others control over time and space[45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52])
- Chaos Manipulation (The Blind Eternities is described as primordial chaos and is a chaotic, logic-defying place that can destroy beings with its destructive entropy. The very substance of The Blind Eternities consists of swirls of chaos and objects to anyone staying there[53][54][55])
- Reality Warping (Oldwalkers can survive inside of rifts. While they all differ, they are described as rifts in time as well as being distortions of reality, that vent out chaos. Falling into one can send you hurtling into the cracks of reality and cause you to tumble through time and space, from here to there, then and now[56][57][58])
- Subjective Reality (Even as only Mind, powerful Oldwalkers like Nicol Bolas can survive being removed from both reality and unreality[59])
- Possible Probability Manipulation (The Blind Eternities is filled with particles of probability and traveling through it means interacting with probability itself. The probability of The Blind Eternities is described alongside its destructive entropy which can destroy almost anything[60][61][62])
- Death Manipulation (Oldwalkers can survive having being touched by Nicol Bolas, his touch scrambles your mind. It can reduce a mortals mind to ash and utilizes death magic. Nicol Bolas's death magic is superior to another being's touch which can cause instant death. It's so potent it can destroy both the body and mind[63][64][65][66])
- Absorption (The Blind Eternities will consume you if you stay within it for too long even if you are a Planeswalker, it is considered a place without logic, physical form, or substance. The Blind Eternities will soak you in dark fatigue and suck away at your very life force[67][68])
- Pain Manipulation & Perception Manipulation (Olderwalkers can survive Nicol Bolas's touch which makes your blood burst & boil. Altering your perception of self and time, his touch makes you experience burning alive and being drowned, starved, and fat. Torn to millions of pieces and instantly put together endlessly for all time. Weaker Planeswalkers have survived his touch, and so could Nicol Bolas when his powers were stolen[69][70])
- Biological Manipulation & Mind Manipulation (The Blind Eternities contains undreamed thoughts and unseen hues. Objects, animals, and ideas appear as obstacles within The Blind Eternities which can warp your body or infiltrate your mind, consuming your thoughts[71][72][73])
- Madness Manipulation (Type 2 & 3; The Blind Eternities chaos is maddening, capable of making a Phantom feel maddening torment. It is a place of chaos, impossibility, and insanity, a formless void without time or space[74][75][76][77])
- Soul Manipulation (Oldwalkers can survive having their essence split in two, an experience which sunders the mind and body[78])
- Magic (Planeswalkers seemed to have Natural Resistances against all sorts of Magic, dulling their overall effects. An example of this is them travelling through the Blind Eternities which is filled with so much raw Aether and unconstrained mana that the magical stresses alone are said to kill anything less than a Planeswalker. Even a phantom would never survive as the errant magic would shred its very essence and subject it to utter destruction[79][80][81])
- Eldrazi Resistance (Oldwalkers were capable of fighting The Eldrazi Titans and being in close proximity them without any issues. That would make them resistant to such things as: Absorption, Corruption, Life Manipulation, Biological Manipulation, Fusionism, Size Manipulation, Disease Manipulation, Poison Manipulation, Mind Manipulation, Mental World, Pain Manipulation, Memory Manipulation, Morality Manipulation, Madness Manipulation (Type 2 & 3), Fear Manipulation, Empathic Manipulation, Reality Warping, Existence Erasure, Deconstruction, Transmutation, Matter Manipulation, Spatial Manipulation, Time Manipulation, Gravity Manipulation. Law Manipulation, Air Manipulation, Attack Reflection, Statistics Reduction, Power Modification, Power Nullification[82])
Neowalkers
After The Mending Planeswalkers were also known as Neowalkers, having had their major Godlike powers stripped from including their immortality and infinite power.
Abilities
- Magic (Planeswalkers have the ability to reach into their memories and draw power from them, they can also call upon mana from across The Multiverse itself. A plane's mana flows through its leylines and pumps power through every living connected to it, even allowing one to hear the voice of the world. Planeswalkers and Mages can connect themselves to leylines and draw on them for mana[83][84][85][86][87])
- Dimensional Travel (Planewalkers with a thought can travel to different worlds. Planes & Worlds are all exist within their own Universe separated by walls of reality and when Planeswalkers travel between them they are tearing open this reality[21][22][23])
