Penny Polentina Amity Arena
Salutations!
~ Penny Polendina

I was the protector of Mantle, but now, I am much more than that. And I wish I was not.
~ Penny, to Ruby about her new responsibility as the Winter Maiden

I'm combat ready!
~ Penny Polendina

Summary

Penny Polendina is a character introduced in the episode "The Stray," when she was found lying on the ground after Weiss Schnee crashed into her whilst chasing after Sun Wukong. Penny speaks robotically, behaves erratically, and is overly active in general. All her actions and emotional states were rather extreme and overacted. When Ruby Rose unintentionally made an unconditional offer of friendship, Penny seemed both immensely pleased and somewhat surprised.

She is an android created by her father, Pietro Polendina, when he somehow gave her a part of his own Aura to grant her a soul. Upon confiding in Ruby that she was a synthetic being, Penny was worried about how she would take the news. However, after seeing how Ruby took it rather well, she was glad that Ruby didn't care if she was a machine, for what mattered was her heart and soul.

In Volume 3, she was destroyed by her own weapons during her fight with Pyrrha Nikos in the Vytal Festival, though was eventually rebuilt by her father in Atlas. At the end of Volume 7, she became the Winter Maiden.

Oneshot Neopolitan[12]), Small City level with Maiden Powers (Was able to match Maiden Cinder in battle multiple times[12])

Was only mildly inconvenienced by being launched across Mantle by an Alpha Megoliath[18]), higher with Aura, Small City level with Maiden Powers (Could take hits from Maiden Cinder[12])

Stamina: Superhuman (Should be at least comparable to Beacon Arc Team RWBY, who can fight hordes of Grimm for a day straight before tiring[12]) | Superhuman (Should be at least comparable to Atlas Arc Teams RWBY and JNOR, who can fight on and off for two days straight with minimal rest[21])

Range: Several meters with swords, Several hundred meters with lasers, Tens of kilometers with Maiden Powers

Standard Equipment: Floating Array

Intelligence: Genius

As an android created by the Atlas Military, Penny is an overwhelmingly skilled fighter. During the Vytal Festival she effectively made it to the semifinals on her own despite the competitors being some of the most skilled fighters that the four Huntsmen Academies had to offer, with her other teammates only being there as stand-ins so she would have a team by the rules of the tournament.[14] She is skilled enough to match Pyrrha Nikos in combat and even put her on the defensive and disarm her, with Penny only definitively losing the fight due to Emerald Sustrai using her Semblance to manipulate Pyrrha's already poor mental state into accidentally using her Semblance to dismember her.[15]

After being reconstructed and upgraded in Atlas, Penny's skill capacity was further increased to the point that she could match Cinder Fall in combat alongside Winter Schnee, only being outmatched when Cinder utilized her Maiden powers,[17] later beating Cinder in a one-on-one fight when both had their respective Maiden powers.[12] Penny also fought and outmatched four of the five Ace-Ops simultaneously, with them being forced to fall back at the end of their fight.[19] In addition, despite having the Maiden powers for the shortest time out of any character, Penny had a near instant proficiency with them due to being an android, allowing her to learn how to use her powers more quickly than other Maidens and easily copying attacks she had seen from other Maidens like Cinder and Fria.[22] She also possesses an internal knowledge bank, as well as access to networked ones.

Penny possesses a masterful level of skill in wielding her weapon of choice, Floating Array, a highly complex series of remotely controlled swords directed by communicating with each blade in order to manipulate them.[12] She can manipulate each individual blade with just a thought or a wave of her hand, altering the configurations and formations of the blades at will to counteract incoming threats, easily utilizing it as a close, mid, and long range melee weapon and a directed energy weapon for overwhelming offensive purposes, as well as a shield and grappling cables to enhance her defense and mobility and thrusters to enhance her mobility and physical capabilities simultaneously.[23][15] She can utilize multiple forms of Floating Array simultaneously, attacking with a mix of swords and lasers from multiple angles as a means of keeping an opponent constantly off balance, and can attack with enough precision as to cut a Bullhead in half with her lasers without harming any of the passengers[15].

Weaknesses: She is naïve, she hiccups when she's lying, and is vulnerable to magnetism due to her physiology. Continual use of her Aura will cause it to decay to the point where she can be left open to more significant damage. Aura's durability is cumulative; it will deplete with each attack she takes and can be brought down by characters of similar strength. Constant exposure to extreme temperature can drain the user's Aura.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • Floating Array: An array of weapons that Penny wields that consist of a gun-blade-looking weapon that can split itself into numerous thin, floating blades that are apparently controlled by wire cables and are stored in a small backpack. The blades can be deployed as a single blade from the back and can further separate. Penny is shown to be able to manipulate the blades through thin, string-like cables attached to the blades. Penny can also relocate rapidly using these cables, by embedding the blade(s) into an immovable object and then reeling the connecting cables in to pull herself towards them. The cables are also shown to be extremely strong, as seen when Penny embeds the blades into a Bullhead's body and pulls the craft down. The blades can be brought together to form a circular ring that is spun to fire a powerful green laser that is capable of splitting into many smaller beams. This attack is powerful enough to slice through metal with ease and take down two attacking aircraft by cutting them apart. The blades can also form several smaller rings that can also shoot several smaller laser beams. Penny can also use these smaller ring configurations as thrusters to maneuver herself around the battlefield. She can also make all of them mini-rifles and shoot individual beams.
  • Magic: As the Winter Maiden, Penny is the bearer of a magical power that has existed in Remnant for millennia. With it, she has the ability to control the elements. Her preferred one is wind, which she favors in combat. However, she has also used ice as well as fire. Due to being an android, Penny learned how to use her powers more quickly than other Maidens and easily copied attacks she had seen from them.[24] At the end of Volume 8, she passed on her powers to Winter Schnee.
