Summary
Non-Standard Breathing is the ability to breathe in environments that baseline human beings would find hazardous to breathe in. This may be accomplished through the usage of gills or other physiological traits, equipment, creating air pockets, or otherwise finding methods to breathe in hazardous environments.
Unlike characters with Self-Sustenance, characters with Non-Standard Breathing still require sustenance through the act of breathing and cannot sustain an indefinite lack of air.
Possible Uses
- Underwater breathing
- Breathing on other planets
- Breathing through toxic fumes
Types
Type 1 (Physiological): The user has gills or other physiological traits that allow them to breathe in hazardous environments such as underwater, on other planets, or in poisonous gases.
- Examples: Great White Shark, Spongebob Squarepants, Giant Squid
Type 2 (Superhuman): The ability to breathe in hazardous environments such as underwater, other planets, or in poisonous gases.
Type 3 (Assisted): The user still requires oxygen and air, however, they are able to breathe in hazardous environments through the use of apparatuses such as gas tanks.
- Examples: Viper (Valorant), Batman
Type 4 (Via Air Manipulation): The ability to create an air pocket in order to breathe in hazardous environments such as underwater, other planets, or poisonous gases.
- Examples: Steven Universe, The Player (Minecraft)
Limitations
- Users may not be able to breathe outside of their specific environment, or have limited breathing ability outside of it.
- Users may need to create an air pocket inside of the hazardous environment in order to breathe.
- Users may need to return to their specific environment after being outside for an extended period of time.
- If a user's breathing apparatus is taken from them, they may asphyxiate and eventually die.
- Users may still be dependent on the limited supply of breathable substance.
Users
- Various Fish (The Real World)
- Big Chill (Ben 10)
- Aquaman (DC Comics)
- Caustic (Titanfall)
- Viper (Valorant)
