The Sacred Timeline
“ | Once I isolated our timeline, all I had to do was manage the flow of time and prevent any further branches. Hence, the TVA. Hence, the Time-Keepers and a highly efficient bureaucracy. Hence, ages and ages of cosmic harmony. | „ |
~ He Who Remains |
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has two statements about its Multiverse being infinite in size:
- Ancient One states that the universe is only one of an infinite number and that there are worlds without end,[1] which is further confirmed by a guidebook which also states that there are endless possibilities.[2]
- A guidebook states that Dormammu is constantly plotting to conquer all of the infinite realities and dimensions within the Multiverse into his Dark Dimension.[3][Note/Explanation 1]
But actually these statements refer only to the Sacred Timeline and not to the Multiverse as a whole, this is because He Who Remains after ending the Multiversal War isolated the Sacred Timeline[4] and disconnected it from the rest of the Multiverse, with WoG stating: "He managed to close himself off and isolate the timeline that we all know from the other timelines. It’s almost like they’re an island that’s completely hidden from everyone. He’s been doing that to protect himself because he’s afraid of the other variants of himself".[5] Therefore nobody, including Ancient One and Dormammu, can have knowledge beyond the Sacred Timeline, thus the statements of the infinite universes, realities and dimensions can only refer to the Sacred Timeline. To finally conclude, this article from the Marvel Website has WoG stating: "The Multiverse expanded indefinitely forward into the future, back into the past, sideways, left and right, to alternate realities we can’t even comprehend",[6] which refers to this scene where the Sacred Timeline branched out.[4]
“ | This universe is only one of an infinite number. Worlds without end. | „ |
~ Ancient One |
Further evidence of this are some statements from WoG which imply that each timeline is a multiverse on its own:
- An article of the Marvel Website states: "A variant of himself [He Who Remains] discovered different multiverses" and "Those He Who Remains variants who could escape from their own multiverse should the timeline break and enter ours?".[7]
- Another article of the Marvel Website states: "The all-seeing, all-knowing omnipresent character at the center of Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series, What If…? has literally seen it all — and that includes across multiple multiverses, too",[8] which refers to The Watcher observing the different timelines.
- Jeffrey Wright (Voice of The Watcher) during an interview stated: "He's kind of overseeing the entire MCU. He's overseeing the multiverses",[9] which also refers to The Watcher observing the different timelines. This same statement is also mentioned on the Marvel Website.[10]
- Ashley C. Bradley (Head writer and executive producer of What If...?) stated: "He's legit punching across multiverses".[11]
- Alexis Wajsbrot (VFX Supervisor of Doctor Strange 2) stated in an interview that they created effects where Doctor Strange and America Chavez jumped through separate multiverses,[12] which refers to this scene.[13]
With this we can conclude that the Sacred Timeline alone is already a 2-A structure.

- ↑ Note:
Although the Dark Dimension is stated to be beyond time[1] and exist outside of time itself,[3] this doesn't mean that it exists outside of the Sacred Timeline. This is because Ancient One includes the Dark Dimension as one of the infinite universes within the Multiverse,[1] which as previously explained refers just to the Sacred Timeline, and a guidebook states that it exists in a void of time and the laws of physics.[2] Therefore, the Dark Dimension instead of existing outside of the Sacred Timeline, it exists inside of it but in a specific place, a void, where the concept of time doesn't exist. Further evidence of this is the existence of variants of Dormammu in other timelines.[14]
The Multiverse and its Timelines
“ | The Multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little. | „ |
~ Doctor Strange |
After the death of He Who Remains, the Sacred Timeline was freed and branched out[4] indefinitely at every point of time[6] into bigger timelines that connected with the rest of the Multiverse,[15] the number of which is infinite.[16] As a plus, the Sacred Timeline, and thus its branches, is stated by WoG to be temporally infinite as there are infinite instances of time always occurring at once.[17] During What If...?, we are told that there are endless possibilities where a single choice can branch out into infinite realities.[18] The Watcher states that every passing moment is a possibility for a new branching,[16] and an article from the Marvel Website also states: "One singular moment leads to a multiverse of infinite possibilities".[19] All these statements confirms that there are an uncountable infinite amount of timelines that are branching out indefinitely from the Sacred Timeline at every passing/singular moment, with infinite instances of time always occurring at once.
“ | My variants. Throughout the Multiverse. Playing with time, like children. But I saw how it ends. I saw their chaos spreading across realities. Universes colliding. Endless incursions. I saw the Multiverse. And it was dying. | „ |
~ Kang the Conqueror |
These timelines that branched out from the Sacred Timeline are also spatio-temporally separated from each other, evidence of this:
- Sorcerers can make portals to travel throughout the Sacred Timeline[1] (As explained before by Multiverse it just refers to the Sacred Timeline), but they can't travel to other timelines of the Multiverse and are impressed when beings like America Chavez are able to travel through it.[13]
- The most powerful characters and multiversal threats such as Infinity Ultron have only demonstrated the ability to travel to different timelines through portals or by warping space-time,[20] never by physical movement.
- The timelines are separated by the Gap Junction.[13]
- The Watcher implied that the destruction of one timeline doesn't lead to the destruction of other timelines.[14]
“ | They're beginning to touch the Multiverse. And if we let them, they will take everything we've built. So let's stop wasting time. | „ |
~ Immortus |
With this we can conclude that all of the uncountable infinite timelines that branched out indefinitely from the Sacred Timeline at least contain an infinite number of universes, realities and dimensions, endless possibilities where every passing/singular moment can branch out into infinite realities and possibilities, making each single branch a 2-A structure which in turn can branch out into uncountable infinite 2-A structures on its own, and so on ad infinitum with each single branch.
This makes the entire structure of the Sacred Timeline along with all of its uncountable infinite branched timelines ad infinitum a Low 1-C structure. And the Multiverse as a whole contains an infinite amount[4] of those unique timelines,[21] which is further confirmed by the Marvel Website,[22][23] like the Sacred Timeline and its branches called "trees"[15] which are stacked,[4] making the entire Multiverse and the space containing all the timelines and branches, called the End of Time, higher into Low 1-C (5D).
Outside the Multiverse
“ | Run, watch, it doesn't matter. From here, I can see everything. No one can stop me now. | „ |
~ Infinity Ultron to The Watcher |
The Watcher is a 5th dimensional being[24] who exists outside the planes of space and time of the Multiverse[25] above everything and everyone else.[26] From there, he has seen everything that has ever happened, ever will happen, ever could happen,[20] or is happening[25] at the totality of the Multiverse across all time and space; and is also stated to be "all-seeing, all-knowing and omnipresent", and that has literally seen it all.[10][8] According to Infinity Ultron, from there the Watcher has the entire Multiverse at his fingertips, and that its boundaries are irrelevant to beings like them.[20]
