The one hundred Makuta were shaped from Antidermis within the Matoran Universe by Mata Nui to uphold peace and stability within, gifted with a variety of powers and wisdom for this purpose. However, after one of their number became corrupted by ambition, the others followed, discarding their inner light and becoming malicious, self-serving monsters who sought only greater and greater power, at any cost. In the process, they evolved into beings of pure Antidermis, shedding their original biomechanical bodies to become things of energy, unburdened by physical needs.


  • Absorption: Makuta absorb others and take on their traits, even in their Antidermis forms.
  • Corruption: Types 2 and 3; Makuta can infect Kanohi with Kraata, and seventh-stage Kraata can do this from a distance.
  • Darkness Manipulation: Makuta can naturally control elemental Shadow.
  • Inorganic Physiology: Type 1. A Makuta is merely a mass of energy occupying a mechanical body.
  • Longevity: The Makuta were created 100,000 years ago, and none of them have noticeably aged, though Voporak can still potentially kill, or at least debilitate them by accelerating their aging.
  • Mind Manipulation and Telepathy: All Makuta are naturally telepathic, and they can control the minds of others. Teridax's Antidermis was also able to control others upon exposure when it was separated from the rest of his mass.
  • Non-Corporeal: In their true forms, Makuta are masses of pure Antidermis - that is, pure energy. However, they need a container to be able to keep their mass together, and without one, they will eventually dissipate and die.
  • Possession: In their true forms, Makuta can possess unoccupied bodies.
  • Self-Sustenance: Types 1, 2, and 3. Makuta do not need to eat, breathe, or sleep thanks to their artificial bodies.
  • Shapeshifting and Sizeshifting: Makuta can freely shapeshift, and can grow in size after absorbing and breaking other beings down into energy.
  • Virus Manipulation: Makuta can engineer and control energy-based viruses that can infect mechanical or biomechanical beings, or create new Rahi.
  • Kraata Powers: All Makuta have access to all the forty-two of the powers used by the forty-two variants of Kraata and, thus, Rahkshi. Some of these powers are already provided otherwise due to their nature as a Makuta, such as shapeshifting and mind reading. They can only have one of these powers active at a time, but they can still easily and rapidly switch between them. These powers are:
  • Accuracy: Regardless of the environment and its condition, or the distance of its target and its size, a Makuta can strike with pinpoint accuracy. They can also effectively use virtually any object as a projectile.
  • Adaptation: Makuta can instantly adapt in any situation so as to gain any advantage possible.
  • Anger: Makuta can easily turn even the closest allies against each other by filling their hearts with uncontrollable rage, making it difficult for them to see reason. Even the slightest differences in opinion lead to fights when this ability is active.
  • Chain Lightning: Makuta can control powerful bolts of lightning that jump between multiple targets.
  • Chameleon: By blending into their environment, a Makuta can become essentially invisible.
  • Confusion: Makuta can form an aura that can reduce even the Toa Nuva to mindless fools.
  • Cyclone: Like a Toa of Air, Makuta can manipulate the wind to form powerful gale-force winds, tornadoes, and cyclones.
  • Darkness: Makuta can absorb all the light in an area, snuffing out even the smallest flames and leaving nothing but pure darkness.
  • Density Control: Makuta have absolute control over their own density, allowing them to make themself as hard as Protosteel, decrease their density to increase their agility, or even render themself temporarily intangible, allowing them to phase through matter. They can manipulate the density of others as long as they can make contact, as well. Objects and beings that are rendered intangible for long enough will cease to exist.
  • Disintegration: With ease, Makuta can reduce even the most durable of objects to dust, breaking down their molecular structure.
  • Dodge: Through this ability, striking a Makuta becomes even more difficult, as they gain the ability to dodge even the swiftest of attacks.
  • Elasticity: A Makuta can stretch their body to great lengths with ease, and can make themself flexible and elastic enough to simply snap back from physical blows and stretch around blades.
  • Electricity: A Makuta can surround themself with an electric field, which they can manipulate to make forcefields and electrocute their opponents.
  • Fear: Those in a Makuta’s presence are assaulted by a petrifying fear that can reach the hearts of even the great Toa Nuva, rendering them too horrified to fight back.
  • Fire Resistance: A Makuta can survive in the deepest reaches of a volcano and bathe in magma without being harmed in the slightest.
  • Fragmentation: A Makuta can cause objects to explode on contact, or from a distance, by firing beams of energy that cause what they strike to shatter.
  • Gravity: A Makuta can manipulate gravity to lift and move around objects and opponents, potentially even eliminating gravity altogether, or to crush others with intense gravitational forces.
  • Heat Vision: A Makuta can project long-range, high-power beams of heat from their eyes to ignite anything within their vision.
  • Hunger: With but a touch, a Makuta can drain all the strength of an opponent and take it for themself. This takes effect near-instantly, rendering their victim incapable of making even the smallest movements as all of their energy has been lost.
  • Ice Resistance: A Makuta can survive long periods of time spent frozen solid without harm.
  • Illusion: A Makuta can shape complex, realistic, and long-term illusions to haunt and immobilize their foes.
  • Insect Control: A Makuta can summon and control insects from across the Matoran Universe to serve and protect them, even entire hives of great, powerful insects.
  • Invulnerability: This power greatly increases a Makuta’s resilience, granting them resistance to the powerful elemental attacks of Toa and making physical attacks almost useless.
  • Laser Vision: Makuta can fire high-power concentrated laser beams from their eyes.
  • Magnetism: Makuta can use magnetism to manipulate metals from their surroundings, shaping them into weapons and armor, or reducing them to an unrecognizable scrap.
  • Mind Reading: A Makuta can invade the minds of the strongest Toa and Turaga and read their minds as if they were open books, allowing them to react to attacks before they occur.
  • Molecular Disruption: A Makuta can completely disintegrate any inorganic object with a touch, and can form disruption fields that eat away at their surroundings.
  • Plant Control: All the plants in a Makuta’s surroundings bow to their will, allowing them to grow and use them as they please. They can form toxic, poisonous thorns, and creepers that rapidly grow and ensnare their opponents.
  • Plasma: Makuta can fire superheated plasma to vaporize objects with ease, and can superheat the same objects on contact. They can also form solid constructs out of plasma.
  • Poison: A Makuta’s presence alone is toxic, poisoning their surroundings, even the soil, preventing plants from growing and making their opponents severely ill.
  • Power Scream: A Makuta can release a high-power scream that can be heard all across the island of Mata Nui, with enough power to shatter stone and deafen their opponents.
  • Quick Healing: A Makuta heals from wounds at a rapid rate, even serious ones, and can heal others just the same.
  • Rahi Control: Makuta can control all the Rahi, the biomechanical lifeforms that make up the Matoran Universe’s wildlife.
  • Shapeshifting: A Makuta has complete control over their body’s shape, though they must absorb other beings to increase their mass.
  • Silence: A Makuta can surround themself with an aura of silence that absorbs all sound, deafening their opponents. They can even absorb sound with a touch.
  • Sleep: Makuta can immediately induce a deep sleep in their opponents that can't be shaken off through normal means.
  • Slowness: With their presence, a Makuta can slow down their opponents, even completely stopping all movement in an area if they so wish.
  • Sonics: A Makuta can manipulate and produce intense sound waves capable of shaking objects apart and disrupting their molecular structure.
  • Stasis Field: By making eye contact with an opponent, a Makuta can trap them nigh-indefinitely in a stasis field.
  • Teleportation: A Makuta can easily teleport great distances, to places they cannot see. They can also teleport others and even teleport projectiles and beams mid-flight.
  • Vacuum: A Makuta can manipulate vacuums to absorb air, to pull and push themself or their opponents around, to tear them apart with great concussive force, or to suffocate them.
  • Weather Control: At will, a Makuta can cause great rainstorms, thunderstorms and blizzards, or drape themself in a heavy fog.
