LadyMariaOfTheAstralClocktower
A corpse, should be left well alone. Oh, I know very well how the secrets beckon so sweetly. Only an honest death will cure you now. Liberate you from your wild curiosity.
~ Maria before attacking The Hunter

Summary

Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower is a boss in Bloodborne: The Old Hunters. According to both her equipment and her weapon, Lady Maria was a citizen of Cainhurst and is directly related to Queen Annalise. However, she was one of the first Hunters to join the nightly hunt, studying under Gehrman, the First Hunter. Despite being a citizen of Cainhurst, who relished in their extravagant uses of blood, she favored her Rakuyo, which required dexterity and skill rather than blood to wield effectively.

At an unknown point in time, Maria forfeited her beloved weapon, tossing it down a well when she could stomach it no longer, and disappeared mysteriously into the Hunter's Nightmare. Gehrman held a curious mania about her, even after she disappeared. The Doll was based on her, down to her facial features, yet sadly lacked her personality, leaving him bitter. Now, Maria resides in the Astral Clocktower, looking after the disfigured patients that reside there, and guarding the "secret" of the Nightmare, the entrance to the Fishing Hamlet, where the Orphan of Kos can be found. She sits in a chair, seemingly lifeless until the Hunter tries to touch her.

Was part of the hunting party that butchered Kos, though whether they directly killed her or just mutilated her corpse is unknown.)

Range: Extended Melee Range with Rakuyo, Tens of Meters with Evelyn and Blood attacks

Standard Equipment:
  • Rakuyo: A hunter weapon wielded by Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower. A trick sword originating in the same country as the Cainhurst Chikage, only this sword feeds not off blood, but instead demands great dexterity. Lady Maria was fond of this aspect of the Rakuyo, as she frowned upon blood blades, despite being a distant relative of the queen. One day she abandoned her beloved Rakuyo, casting it into a dark well, when she could stomach it no longer.
  • Evelyn: A special pistol used by Cainhurst knights. The Evelyn uses Quicksilver Bullets, just as any workshop firearm, but the Cainhurst variant relies more on bloodtinge.
  • Maria Hunter Set: Among the first hunters, all students of Gehrman, was the lady hunter Maria. This was her hunter's garb, crafted in Cainhurst. Maria is distantly related to the undead queen, but had great admiration for Gehrman, unaware of his curious mania. This set boasts the highest Blood defense of all armor sets.

Intelligence: Gifted (As Gehrman's personal pupil, Lady Maria is among the most skilled hunters in existence, her skill in combat only being surpassed by Gehrman himself, her weapon of choice reflecting this as it possesses the highest skill requirement to properly wield out of any weapon in The Hunter's arsenal.)

Weaknesses: None notable

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • Rally: A core mechanic of a hunter's fighting style, the ability to heal for part or all of the damage taken from a recent attack by retaliating with their own attacks. This allows a hunter to use an offense-centric, high risk/high reward style of combat, giving them the ability to sustain themselves by constantly attacking and counterattacking the enemy. However, this ability requires the opponent to be biological in some manner, as it is done in part by 'bathing in the opponent's blood' and does not work on inanimate targets or spirits[4].
  • Visceral Attack: A unique and brutal technique in a hunter's fighting style, using a firearm or projectile Hunter Tool such as the Blackskye Eye or Augur of Ebrietas to parry an incoming attack, The Hunter briefly staggers the opponent, leaving them open for The Hunter to drive their hand into the opponent's torso or skull and tear out large chunks of their organs, dealing a large amount of damage. This can also be used on an unsuspecting enemy, hitting them with a fully charged heavy melee attack to stagger them in the same way[6].
  • Blood Bullets: A technique used by hunters as a means of conserving or creating ammunition for firearms in place of Quicksilver Bullets. Using their own blood as a substitute, a hunter is able to create a seemingly limitless number of Blood Bullets so long as their vitality holds out[2].
  • Art of Quickening: Similar to Gehrman, Maria can increase her speed while shrouding herself in a fog as she moves around the arena. She can use this ability to dash across the arena in a short amount of time.
  • Iai Blow: Extremely fast long-range strike with a delayed startup and strong lateral tracking.
  • Launcher Combo: Quick two-hit combo that will launch you into the air, sometimes used as part of longer combos.
  • Double Overhead Slash: Heavy slash with a slightly delayed startup and super armor, used on its own and in combos.
  • Double Lateral Slash: Heavy horizontal slash with both blades.
  • Cross Slash: Lunging scissor-type cross slash.
  • Transformation Attacks: Used periodically to switch between weapon modes.
  • Dive Bomb: Leaps high in the air, pauses and performs a forward dive at a fixed angle. Tracks laterally and creates an explosion when she lands.
  • Blood Burst: Raises the blade above her head and performs a small frontal short- to mid-range area attack with a slightly delayed startup marked by blue particle effects.
  • Blood Stinger: Lowers the blade to her side and performs a mid- to long-range diagonal slash attack with a delayed startup marked by blue particle effects, sometimes followed by a second identical slash.
  • Blood Lance: Levels the blade at her shoulder and performs a heavily-delayed long-range thrust attack in a straight line; the windup is marked by blue particle effects and she'll sometimes immediately follow up with a wide horizontal slash with the same reach.
  • Flying Cross: Resembles the Cross Slash but with a delayed startup and fairly obvious telegraph. This move will instantly stagger you and if it connects, Maria will immediately attempt a visceral attack.
