50 years of Gamera

Summary

Gamera is a kaiju series created by Daiei Film Co. Ltd. to capitalize on the success of Godzilla. After seven Showa era films, Daiei went bankrupt following the release of Gamera vs. Zigra. Gamera was then bought by Tokuma Shoten, which released Gamera: Super Monster in 1980. The film was a critical and box office failure and caused the series to go on hiatus for nearly two decades. Fifteen years later, Daiei hired director Shusuke Kaneko to create a Gamera film for the series' 30th anniversary.

Gamera: Guardian of the Universe was released in 1995, and proved a success with critics and the box office. Two sequels were released a few years later on larger budgets. In 2000, Daiei Film Co. was acquired from Tokuma Shoten by Kadokawa Pictures, which later released Gamera: The Brave to Japanese theaters. The film was a box office failure, despite decent reception, and caused the series to go on another hiatus. In 2014, it was announced that a new Gamera film was set to be released for Gamera's 50th anniversary. A teaser poster and proof-of-concept trailer were released the following year, however, as of 2020, the film is still in development.
