Summary
The story is shown from the perspective of the protagonist, Makoto Naegi, who starts a new year at the elite private Hope's Peak Academy. This government-funded school is renowned for educating students at the top of their expertise. These students are given the title of "Ultimate". However, every year the school hosts a raffle in which every average student nationwide is entered, and a random student is selected to enter the school as the "Ultimate Lucky Student" - as is the case with Makoto Naegi and is shown through the short story, Makoto Naegi's Worst Day Ever.
The story revolves around fifteen students trapped in the school under the control of a sadistic monochrome bear named Monokuma. They are forced to live a communal lifestyle together under a set amount of rules (included in the e-Handbook) for the rest of their lives, although it is possible to "disrupt the peace" in order to escape. To do this, a student must "graduate" from the school by murdering a classmate. After a body has been discovered, the rest of the students must work together to discover the culprit, who is known as the "blackened", while the innocents are on the side of the "whitened," playing off Monokuma's monochromatic color scheme. If the culprit can fool the rest of their classmates, then they alone can graduate from the school while the rest of the students will be punished (executed). However, if the classmates uncover the true culprit, then the culprit alone will be punished with a gruesome execution while everyone else remains unharmed.
Monokuma releases differing motives in each chapter to encourage students to commit murder. During this time, the students attempt to uncover the secrets of the school, including why they were trapped there in the first place, as well as other ways to escape the school other than the graduation clause.
Power of the Verse
Most of the characters in verse have talents on a level far beyond the ordinary human. Examples of these talents are the Ultimate Analyst, which can read and analyze anything virtually instantly, Ultimate Programmer, which can develop extremely complex artificial intelligence programs, Ultimate Musician, which can perform at a high level in all musical endeavors, Ultimate Nurse, which has a high level on medicine and Ultimate Lucky Student, who incredible incidents, both lucky and seemingly unlucky, occur to.
The verse does not lack in the intelligence section. Many students can plot complicated murders with others capable of solving them, with combatants having immense combat experience ever since childhood.
The verse also contains a high level of technology. There are robots made by the Warriors of Hope. The AI is so advanced that it is capable of feeling actual emotions and more. And the Neo World Program is a virtual reality program that is described as "the ultimate reality" and can even be shared by more than one user simultaneously.
In addition, the study of humans has seen significant scientific progress. A test was conducted to see whether a talentless person might be made extraordinarily gifted. The experiment was a success, and Izuru Kamukura was born of it.
The verse is surprisingly powerful despite being a murder mystery series in physical statistics as well, due to the average humans in the verse being all Small Building level with Superhuman speed and reactions, with the peak reaching even Large Town level power and Relativistic+ speed or reaction speed. The V3 continuity, despite being weaker than the main one, has still a pretty high power level for this genre, thanks to the peak humans being Wall level with Subsonic speed and the most powerful characters reaching even City Block level power and Supersonic+ speed.
