Shunsui Sakuranosuke Jiro Kyoraku (京楽 次郎 佐蔵総春水 Kyōraku no Jirō Sakuranosuke Shunsui ) is the captain of the 1st Division and Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13. His lieutenants are Nanao Ise and Genshirō Okikiba. He is the former captain of the 8th Division.

Shunsui was a student of the Captain Commander Shigekuni Yamamoto himself along with Jushiro Ukitake[3]. Shunsui is skilled enough to use Hakuda techniques such as Tsukiyubi with ease[4])

- Fire Manipulation, Shockwave Generation & Space-Time Manipulation (Ittō Kasō is a fire-based Kidō that creates a massive blade of fire to attack an opponent that overtakes several buildings and can create a large shockwave that has the range and power to level several buildings. Ittō Kasō is also capable of tearing holes in space time[6][7])

- Law Manipulation (Shunsui's Shikai, Katen Kyōkotsu forces anyone that is within the range of her Reiatsu to obey the rules of whatever children's game is active including Shunsui himself[13])
- Perception Manipulation, Afterimage Creation, Shadow Manipulation & Duplication (With Kageokuri, Shunsui can create an afterimage in a different location by getting at his opponent to stare at his shadow. If someone with an extreme amount of[14] Reikaku is staring at the shadow, an extremely life like image is created. When in the midst of a fight, the senses one uses to feel Reiatsu take an enormous amount of concentration, such that a person begins to subconsciously stop utilizing their eyes. This allows Shunsui to trick his opponents senses by consolidating his Reiatsu, making his opponent mistake his Reiatsu for him. If his opponent catches a glimpse of his shadow, anything that they see may or may not be a silhouette of Shunsui[14]. With this ability, Shunsui can create several clones to attack his opponent[14])
- Damage Boost & Damage Reduction (Irooni is a game that allows Shunsui or his opponent to amplify the damage of his attacks on a specific color if they call it out[15]. The amount of damage dealt is dependent on how much of that color the person is wearing at the time, and the amount of that color on Shunsui[15])
- Limited Teleportation, Pocket Dimension Creation & BFR (Kageoni is a game based around not stepping on shadows. It allows Shunsui and his opponent to strike each other through shadows[15]. Shunsui is also capable of hiding within these shadows[15], and can create a pocket dimension in the shadows[16] that Shunsui can stay in for an extended amount of time[16], Shunsui is capable of teleporting himself[17] or others to alternate shadows[16] and pulling his opponents into shadows[18])
- Wind Manipulation (Bushōgoma is a game that allows Shunsui to create a massive gust of wind to distract and push back his opponent[19])
- Paralysis Inducement & Pain Manipulation (Yubikiri Genman is a game based around lies. On the first lie, your fingers are paralyzed. On the second lie, you feel as if your whole body is being crushed. On the third lie, you feel as if your entire body is being stabbed from the inside. This technique was created for the purposes of extracting information from dishonest opponents[20])
- Illusion Creation & Speed Amplification (Daruma-san ga Koronda is akin to a game of red light green light. His opponent becomes “it” when playing this game. Shunsui is able to see the Reiatsu released from his opponents attack, then in order to touch his opponent, Shunsui can travel on the trajectory towards his opponents Reiatsu and travel the shortest possible distance to his opponent. During Shunsui's travel, his opponent sees an illusion of him standing still[21]. This ability allows Shunsui to blitz[21] and surprise his opponent from large distances, even when they were equal to him in speed[21])
- Bankai: Katen Kyōkotsu Karamatsu Shinjū:
- Summoning, Reality Warping, Durability Negation & Enhanced Non-Physical Interaction (Shunsui's Bankai: Katen Kyōkotsu Karamatsu Shinjū summons his Zanpakuto spirits into the real world[22] to interact with the his surroundings and help him. The main ability of Shunsui's bankai is to create a "play" based around the tragic story of the twin suicide of two lovers[22]. This ability works around the concept of "Stages" or "Acts" with each stage having a unique effect, and each Act is went through in order. These abilities could even affect Lille Barro in his intangible light form, and many of the Acts can negate durability with their effects)
- Passive Sense Manipulation (The Reiatsu Shunsui exudes in his Bankai creates a dark and gloomy atmosphere and causes all those who experience it to feel a sensation similar to the chills[22]. The activation of his Bankai also seemingly turns the sky into night[22])
- Damage Transferal & Limited Immortality (Type 2 - The first Act of Shunsui's Bankai, Act One: The Sharing of Pain makes Shunsui and his opponent share all wounds they inflict upon each other[22]. They are incapable of dying whilst this Dan is in play, no matter how grievous the wound being shared is[22])
- Disease Manipulation (The Second Act of Shunsui's Bankai, Act Two: The Pillow of Shame infects the opponent with an incurable disease that causes large spots to sprout on their body, causing them to bleed profusely[22])
- Energy Absorption, Spatial Manipulation, Empathic Manipulation, Temperature Manipulation & Water Manipulation (The Third Act of Shunsui's Bankai, Act Three: The Abyss creates a large body of water and submerges both Shunsui and his opponent within it, forcefully draining both of them of their Reiatsu until it runs out[22]. This water is completely inescapable, and the surface will only get farther away if you try to escape, forcing both of them to drown[22]. The water is not only cold enough to freeze one's body, but is also capable of freezing their resolve as well[22])
- Thread Manipulation & Explosion Manipulation (The final Act of Shunsui's Bankai, Final Act: Thread Cut Blood-Soaked Throat, creates a large thread[22] that Shunsui uses to decapitate his opponent[22], then that thread is used to cause their head to explode[22])

Intelligence: Genius, Despite his laid-back attitude, Shunsui has repeatedly shown himself to be a perceptive and insightful man. According to Yamamoto, even when he was younger, Shunsui has always had an eye for seeing the true character of anyone he meets. He was also one of the few people to suspect that Aizen was hiding something. In battle, Shunsui has proven to be very adept at noticing and understanding details in an opponent's skills or attack patterns. During his battle against Chad, he quickly determined the basics behind Chad's Reiryoku blasts, warning him about those kinds of techniques, and even explaining that his energy blasts would eventually use up his life energy. Shunsui has also proven himself very persuasive. Shortly after becoming Captain-Commander, he was able to convince Central 46 to agree to all his new requests.
Weaknesses: Shunsui can be very lazy. Shunsui is also forced to obey the rules of his Shikai or he himself will die. The wide range of his Bankai means he has to wait until his allies get of range before he can use it, lest he accidentally hurts them as well.
