Summary

Monkey D. Luffy, known as "Straw Hat Luffy", is the main protagonist of the manga and anime, One Piece. He's the son of Monkey D. Dragon, a revolutionary considered “The World's Most Dangerous Criminal”; the grandson of Monkey D. Garp, a powerful Marine Vice-Admiral who had cornered the late Pirate King himself on several occasions; the sworn brother of late "Fire Fist" Portgas D. Ace and Revolutionary chief of staff Sabo; and the foster son of Curly Dadan. He seeks to find One Piece and become the Pirate King; to accomplish this, he founded the Straw Hat Pirates and set out on the high seas at age 17 in search of the elusive treasure, beginning a series of increasingly odd and dangerous adventures. He has eaten the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which turned his body into rubber and gives him stretching powers; he's developed great mastery and creativity with his powers, creating two unique techniques with them: Gear 2nd, which makes him much faster, and Gear 3rd, which allows him to inflate any body parts for a stronger attack. During the time-skip, he has a new technique: Gear 4th, which makes him much stronger and faster than even the other two Gears, but with a considerable cost to it. With the support from Silvers Rayleigh and the desire to reunite with his crew after the Sabaody Island Incident and the Marineford War, he endured vigorous training on the island of Ruskaina where he learned the 3 forms of Haki, and out of the three, he specialized in “Haoshoku Haki”.

Luffy is quite notorious for battling powerful individuals and organizations wherever he goes, and regularly poses a threat to the balance of the world by challenging the Seven Warlords of the Sea, the World Government, and now the Emperors, and so far has managed to either win completely or escape by a hair's breadth. Through word of his various exploits and victories spreading around, he's already become one of the most infamous and feared pirate captains in the world after the timeskip.

Luffy has his own signature laughter style, which is "Shishishishishi~".

Following the events of the Whole Cake Island Arc, Luffy's successful ‘raid’ against the Emperor Big Mom, the complete destruction of her castle, and his defeat of her two top Commanders was made public knowledge by the journalist “Big News” Morgans. Furthermore, the formation of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet and the addition of a former Warlord to his main crew, Jinbe, are also revealed to the masses.

After the time-skip, and after the events of Dressrosa, his bounty was 500,000,000 Berries.

Stamina: Superhuman (Has an immensely high endurance and recovery speed. Capable of lasting in brawls for nearly a dozen hours with no rest. During his more serious fights, Luffy has suffered life-threatening injuries that gave him severe internal bleeding and damage to his organs, and he could continue fighting with only moderate lapses. He only stops fighting when it is physically impossible for him to even move. He took several strikes from Rob Lucci that affected all of his organs and left him in a large puddle of his own blood, yet he could stand back up shortly after and withstand the same attack immediately after. After the Marineford War, Luffy suffered from severe physical and mental trauma due to the loss of his brother, his life-threatening injuries, and having to use adrenaline-based drugs more than once to keep fighting, only to merely pass out and go on a rampage several hours later immediately after going through surgery, and being in perfect condition some time after. During his fight with Charlotte Katakuri, Luffy had only slept for a few hours for the last days, and was vomiting blood, barely conscious, and taking a beating, yet could continue fighting quite effectively, which surprised his opponent. He is capable of fighting for over 13 hours despite having suffering severe injuries all over his body and shrugging off a fatal injury that tore off one side of his torso. Able to persevere with highly lethal poison coursing through his veins and with grave wounds. His endurance can be nearly completely restored instantly if he eats meat)

Range: Tens of Kilometers (Luffy should be able to reach much further distances than his younger self. The range of his Haōshoku and Kenbunshoku Haki is much greater than ever before)

Standard Equipment: His Straw Hat.

Intelligence:

Above Average in general. Genius in combat. He has displayed a myriad of different qualities of intelligence ranging from unique creativity to quickly comprehending difficult situations and events. This was born from his training with his grandfather Monkey D. Garp, and his upbringing with his foster brothers Portgas D. Ace and Sabo. Alongside Garp, Luffy learned how to survive. Alongside Ace and Sabo, Luffy learned how to fight. Raised in the harsh environment of Mount Culubo with his brothers, he got stronger and smarter every passing day. After the timeskip, he trained with the legendary Silvers Rayleigh and learned Haki, but he also learned how to use his abilities more efficiently.

Luffy is extremely innovative and creative. As a child under the age of 6 years old, Luffy was forced to learn how to survive by getting thrown in ravines, being left in the wild alone and tied to balloons. Because of that, he taught himself how to hunt and cook meat to survive, showing his unnatural growth. When his ship was about to crash into Laboon, he shot a cannonball into the whale and used the recoil of its shockwave to stop his ship from colliding into Laboon. Luffy has been shown several times to create techniques on the spot by copying things that he has seen, whether it be an attack or an object. After seeing Genzo's pinwheel, Luffy made a technique inspired by it, where he uses all the force and weight of a sea beasts' huge body and spins it in a pinwheel formation to defeat several foes. He has great situational awareness, noticing a pole outside of a building in which he could stretch to dodge a plethora of daggers from Buggy. He used a rock in the ground to block a stab from Kuro. He threw a ship's mast at Krieg and stabbed Laboon with his own as well. He also stretches to retreat from fights occasionally, like when he took a small break from his raid on Enies Lobby to gain high ground in order to scout his enemies and his location, or when he grappled the top of Krieg's ship in order to dodge an explosion. He also noticed Buggy in a sandstorm and using him as a human shield in the heat of battle with the greatest swordsman in the world. He used a piece of a mirror in his hair to reflect Foxy's Noro Noro beams. During the wedding in Whole Cake Island, he planned putting a mirror inside a cake, and thought of the plan to superimpose his image on a bunch of animals to use as a diversion to confuse Big Mom and her children. While fighting Rob Lucci, he showcased this to a far superior extent, using large throwable objects like boxes to block his field of vision. He was capable of reading his fighting style, switching from long range to short range and vice versa whenever he preferred to use a specific ability, whether it was the close range tekkai and shigan or the long range soru and rankakyu.

Luffy created his own fighting style using the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which consists of several different types of techniques ranging from regular strikes to slams, deflecting attacks, making opponents dizzy, using snap-back attacks that redirect the force of opponents to use back at them, and more. He has a prodigious aptitude for battle and keenly seizes the developments of fights to his advantage and doesn't waste any movements during battle. He's learned to mix that fighting style with Haki to bring out the best of his abilities. He created Gear 2nd, a transformation activated by manually doping his blood by pumping his legs and speeding up the blood flow, and Gear 3rd, a technique activated by pumping oxygen throughout his bones, both techniques taking advantage of his rubber body. Later in Dressrosa, he created Gear 4th, a transformation activated by blowing air into Luffy's muscles and covering them with Haki. Over the timeskip, Luffy developed a technique known as "Red Hawk", which is a tribute to his late brother who manipulated fire, where he could move his arm fast enough even while underwater for friction to light his arm on fire and burn victims from the inside.

Luffy has the attitude of surpassing his enemies instead of just defeating them. This is attributed to his ability of reading the emotions of others, dubbed an "Absorptive power", allowing him to do many things from anticipating attacks to copying techniques by sight alone. He fights enemies by meeting them at full strength, and he uses their fighting style as food for growth. He was capable of copying the Soru technique just by seeing it once, even though the movement was superior to his reaction speed. He was able to dodge Blueno's attack from fresh out of a portal by anticipating his direction of movement.

Luffy is capable of switching back and forth from his regular strikes and rubber attacks. He is great at guarding barrage attacks, like when he blocks several kicks from Rob Lucci with a single arm, and he excels at exploiting openings in his enemies attacks. As his regular strikes are weaker than his Gomu Gomu attacks, he takes advantage of it to use it to land quick and effective strikes.

Luffy is an extremely skilled fighter, battling and defeating characters more durable than the attacks he could dish out (Krieg), faster than him (Kuro) and can predict his movements (Enel), with unorthodox skills that take years to master (CP9 like Rob Lucci), and can see the future (Charlotte Katakuri). He's also fought against/alongside Roronoa Zoro, an extremely skilled swordsman in his own right who, while extremely injured, has been shown to block and dodge 6 swords coming from all directions. He fought and defeated Captain Kuro, the character with the second highest IQ in the East Blue, While he fought Don Krieg, to avoid his explosive spear he grabbed onto the shaft so he wouldn't be in the range of the explosion, then he destroyed it by punching it 5 times in the same spot. He has great precision rivaling Roronoa Zoro, who could cut a booger in half while drunk. Luffy quickly thinks of effective ways to get himself out of sticky situations and make the best of them, like when Don Krieg held him in a net, and Luffy used Krieg's weapon to create a new move where he used the net to shape his new technique, then he spun him several dozen times and slammed him into a boat. He's shown a larger variety in techniques than Don Krieg, who's fighting style revolves around manipulating weapons. During his raid on Enies Lobby, he defeated thousands of heavily armed and trained Marine Soldiers. He worked very efficiently, defeated hundreds of soldiers every few seconds by using several different methods of fighting:

  • He used their numbers against them and made opportunities for them to friendly fire.
  • He used his surroundings to his advantage, shown when he destroyed a building and used its fragments as ammo to punch towards the marines.
  • He used wide spread AOE attacks. He used his own attacks to harm several people at once, or he used other peoples' weapons to attack multiple victims.

When Luffy was on Rusukaina, Rayleigh taught him how to use his abilities better. Luffy lost the weakness to Gear 2nd and 3rd and could now use them in short, quick bursts. He taught him how to efficiently reflect attacks back at the opponent with double the force instead of letting them rebound in random directions.

Luffy is also an extremely quick learner. During the East Blue Saga, he adapted to Captain Kuro's unpredictable fighting style in only a few minutes. In Alabasta, while focusing on surviving a stab wound and trying to save Arabasta from Crocodile's sandstorm, he figures out Crocodile's weakness to liquids and used it to defeat him. In Skypiea, he analyzed Enel's Kennbunshoku Haki and found ways to deal with it: Clearing his mind completely so his movements couldn't be read and sending shots into a wall that rebounded randomly so that their movement couldn't be predicted with telepathy. In Enies Lobby, he analyzed the Soru ability after only seeing it once and mastered the ability, incorporating it into his fighting style and created Gear 2nd based on it without any prior practice. In Whole Cake Island, he merged using Future Sight in his own fighting style without any prior use of the ability. In Wano, while training to learn Advanced Armament Haki, he accidentally learned an even more advanced version which could destroy targets from the inside, and in a few days he mastered the ability.

Weaknesses: Standard Devil Fruit users weaknesses. Excessive usage of Gear 4th renders Luffy unable to use Haki for 10 minutes. Gear 4th greatly increases Luffy's metabolism, making his body burn calories much faster and greatly lowers how long he can remain in combat. Gear 4th: Tankman can only be utilized when Luffy has consumed a sufficient amount of calories.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

Gomu Gomu no Mi (Rubber Rubber Fruit): A Paramecia type Devil Fruit, this fruit turns the user’s body into rubber. The fruit's major strength, as demonstrated by Luffy, is that the person's body can stretch like rubber even when the ability user himself is nullified. It also makes them almost entirely immune to blunt attacks, including hand-to-hand combat, bullets or even cannonballs (this mechanic is further explained here). Thanks to Luffy's own creativity both in and out of combat, this fruit has consistently proven itself to be among the most formidable, versatile, and unpredictable within the Paramecia class. The user's rubber-like body also allows the user to survive falls from heights and collisions that would kill a normal person. The user's ability to stretch and twist like rubber to extreme lengths not only makes him immune to injuries that originate from such, but it also allows him to even rebound, that can give him a great advantage in or out of battle. Stretching also allows the user to drastically increase the range of what would otherwise be considered a powerful close-range attack, turning it into a devastating mid-range or long-range attack. A stretched limb can also be used to store potential energy like a stretched spring, increasing the velocity by stretching his arm back resulting in increased power. Combined with Haki, his power is increased even more. Owing to rubber-like natural insulating properties, the user is also immune to electrical attacks and is also able to hit an electric Logia user without Haki. Owing to rubber-like natural insulating properties, the user is also immune to electrical attacks and is even able to hit an electric Logia user without the use of Haki.

Gear Second Post Timeskip

This technique consists of Luffy accelerating the blood flow in all or some parts of the body to provide them with more oxygen and nutrients, making him much faster and powerful. It can be used to achieve a full body effect, or an effect on any single area of his body (e.g. the arm). The techniques in this mode are basically the same as the regular attacks, but greatly increased by his enhanced attack speed and, consequently, attack power. The known Gear 2nd specific techniques are listed below.

  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Pistol: Luffy delivers a Gomu Gomu no Pistol so fast that his fists movements are invisible, and it truly seems like he is shooting at his opponent with enough power to send the opponent several meters away.
  • Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk: Luffy uses his Busōshoku Haki in conjunction with Gear 2nd to ignite his arm and strike his opponent, creating an explosion upon contact.
  • Gomu Gomu no Eagle Bazooka: Luffy hardens both his arms with Busōshoku Haki and stretches them backwards, and then he delivers a great impact to the opponent after he blasts his arms forwards.
  • Gomu Gomu no Hawk Whip: Luffy imbues his entire leg with Busōshoku Haki, and then swings it towards the target as an elongated kick.
  • Gomu Gomu no Hawk Gatling: A Haki enhanced version of Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling. Luffy uses Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling while using Busōshoku: Koka on his arms to further enhance the power of his punches.

Gear Third Post UT

Luffy pumps air through his bones to make them gigantic. This gives his arm more mass and a larger area to attack with much far strength. The techniques in this mode are basically the same as the regular attacks, but vastly more boosted by his increased mass and power. The known Gear 3rd specific techniques are listed below.

  • Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun: After pumping air into his fist to drastically increase its mass, Luffy uses his Busōshoku Haki to harden it (appearing to be significantly harder than his regular Gear 3rd which has been likened to steel in the sense bullets ricochet off his Gear 3rd limbs instead of bouncing off), turning his arm black in the process. Luffy then attacks in a similar motion to when he uses his Gigant Pistol, launching his fist towards his opponent. This attack seems to be more densely pumped with air at the tip compared to the Gigant Pistol, forming a large round ball at his forearm, whilst the rest of his arm remains at the same size, although stretched.
    • Gomu Gomu no Thor Elephant Gun: An enhanced version of the move in which Luffy launches himself into the air with Gomu Gomu no Rocket first, before striking, discharging electricity when it lands.
  • Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gatling: After enlarging and imbuing both his arms with Busōshoku Haki in a similar manner as Gomu Gomu no Elephant Gun, Luffy uses his stretching ability to bring his fists forward repeatedly in a blurry, rapid barrage of strong punches that creates the illusion of him having multiple arms.
  • Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Magnum: After enlarging and imbuing both his arms with Busōshoku Haki and gaining a considerable distance from his opponent, Luffy stretches his arms back and strikes with open palms simultaneously while in the air.

Gear Fourth 1

In order to activate the technique, Luffy coats his arm in Busōshoku Haki before biting into his forearm. Similar to how he activates Gear 3rd, he blows an incredible amount of air into his body, but this time he first inflates his muscular structure before distributing the air throughout his body, with emphasis on his upper half. Luffy's proportions become warped and his body becomes much larger in size, with his arms, upper torso, and legs coated in Busōshoku Haki. The coating across his torso resemble the wispy ends made from flames, giving it the appearance of tattoos, and he also gains shading around the inner and outer edges of his eyes. Gear 4th also increases Luffy’s metabolism. Once Gear 4th reaches its limit, it automatically deactivates and Luffy is left exhausted and unable to use Haki for ten minutes. Even afterwards, Gear 4th is extremely taxing on Luffy's body and stamina.

Later on the series he increases the duration of the form and even reduces the stamina drain after improving his Armament Haki.

Boundman

Luffy's proportions become warped and his body becomes much larger in size, with his arms, upper torso, and legs coated in Busōshoku Haki. In this form, Luffy is continuously emitting steam in this form. As a side-effect, he is incapable of standing still on the ground, and instead constantly bounces on the spot. While Luffy is using Boundman, his physical strength and speed are increased whereas before, Gear 2nd's lack of strength and Gear 3rd's lack of speed made them ineffective individually.

  • Gomu Gomu no Kong Gun: After compressing his fist into his enlarged forearm (and making it look like an actual cannon), Luffy unleashes a devastating short-range punch with enough power to break through Doflamingo's own Haki-enhanced defense and blow the Shichibukai all the way from Dressrosa's palace to the middle of the city.
  • Gomu Gomu no Rhino Schneider: After compressing both legs into his body, Luffy delivers a double flying kick. It has enough power to send the opponent crashing through dozens of buildings and across a town center.
  • Gomu Gomu no Culverin: Luffy delivers a punch like a regular Gomu Gomu no Pistol, but if it is dodged, he can redirect his punch an unspecified number of times, without losing momentum, to still land with tremendous force. In addition, this punch does not need to retract back to his body right after being "fired" as the regular Gomu Gomu no Pistol does. It can sharply change its trajectory multiple times until it hits its desired target.
  • Gomu Gomu no Double Culverin: Luffy pulls back his arms before punching his opponent with them.
  • Gomu Gomu no Leo Bazooka: Luffy winds up his two arms and launches them out with open palms, releasing a blast of air that can send a close ranged target flying at incredible momentum. It is executed very similarly to his Gomu Gomu no Bazooka.
  • Gomu Gomu no Kong Organ: Luffy fires off several Kong Gun punches in rapid succession. This attack is similar to his Gomu Gomu no Gatling Gun, and seemingly shows Luffy firing off dozens of punches simultaneously.
  • Gomu Gomu no King Kong Gun: Luffy blows a large amount of air into his arm, drastically increasing its size, before compressing his fist and unleashing a devastating blow. This was first used to defeat Doflamingo, and was powerful enough to break through the Shichibukai's Spider's Web and God Thread techniques simultaneously, as well as send him flying into the city below with enough force to completely level the town and cause the ground to be torn apart.

Tankman full

Luffy takes a form similar to Boundman, but his torso is enlarged to the point where he basically looks like a Rubber-Ball. This form focuses heavily on increasing his defenses and the harmonization between his Haki and Gomu-Gomu powers.

  • Tankman: Manpuku Version: So far the base form of Tankman is unknown. To activate this form Luffy has to consume copious amounts of food, which makes him consequently grow to an enormous and bloated size. Tankman gives Luffy tremendous Haki-based durability to which it is stronger than that of Boundman. Furthermore, this form further increases the power and magnitude of Boundman's compression-based offense by using Luffy's enormous stomach as a launcher.
    • Gomu Gomu no Cannonball: The Gear 4th version of Gomu Gomu no Fuusen and Gomu Gomu no Ore Fire. After trapping an enemy within him by compressing and withdrawing his stomach, Luffy launches them forward and into the air with incredible power and speed.

Luffy's Gear Fourth - Snakeman One Piece

Luffy takes a form similar to Boundman, but he appears much skinnier, and this form focuses heavily on the use of homing attacks and a dramatic increase in speed.

  • Python: An attack method employed by Luffy in both Boundman and Snakeman. He sends his fist out and continuously changes its path in order to land hits on opponents who try to evade it. The more his punches miss and stretch, the faster they become.
  • Gomu Gomu no Jet Culverin: Similar in nature to Boundman's Culverin attack, but much faster.
  • Gomu Gomu no Black Mamba: Luffy uses a mix between Python and Gomu Gomu no Orgun, sending a flurry of attacks that home in on the enemy should they deflect or dodge the initial punches.
  • Gomu Gomu no King Cobra: There is no clear use to this attack, but Luffy enlarges his right arm and sends it out from random vectors until it strikes his opponent with great force. His most powerful attack in this form.

  • Regular Techniques
    • Gomu Gomu no Kane: Luffy uses Busōshoku Haki to harden his forehead and gives a powerful stretched headbutt to the opponent.
    • Gomu Gomu no Snake Shot: Luffy uses his Devil Fruit abilities to launch his arm in a swerving snake-like movement and grasp the enemy with an open hand gripping hard enough to cause great pain.
    • Gomu Gomu no Bullet: Luffy stretches one arm far behind him, then uses Busōshoku Haki to harden the fist at the end of his stretched arm, and finally snaps it back to deliver a devastating blow to an opponent's abdomen.
    • Gomu Gomu no UFO: Luffy twists back his legs midair, and then proceeds to let them go, causing them to spin around horizontally similar to a discus, lashing out with his legs and kicking anyone within reach.

There are normally two types of Haki regular people can tap into: the Kenbunshoku Haki which allows individuals to sense the presence of others, and Busōshoku Haki which allows individuals to create an invisible armor around them. There is however a third type of Haki, Haōshoku Haki, that only a few individuals can use. Luffy is one of these people.

Luffy possesses Haōshoku Haki, a very rare type of Haki whose users are said to have the qualities of a king. Luffy is capable of generating a massive aura that can cover over several kilometers with such an immense intensity that the air seemingly discharges electricity when coming into contact with any resistance.

Luffy learned to use Busōshoku Haki during the two-year timeskip and has displayed a high level of proficiency with it. He is able to cover a large portion of his body with Busōshoku: Koka on a whim, and at his highest intensity, can cover almost all of his body at once. He has somehow found a way to harmonize the armored defense of Koka with his Rubber body, forcing almost all physical force to bounce straight off.

  • Busōshoku: Koka: This technique somehow uses Busōshoku Haki to drastically harden his body (or parts of it). How exactly it works is currently unknown. When Luffy uses it, the arm he applies it on becomes black and shiny, much like vulcanized rubber.

Luffy learned to use Kenbunshoku Haki during the two-year timeskip. With it, he is capable of sensing the presence, emotion, and intent of others, greatly aiding his ability to dodge attacks, such as bullets. By the start of Wholecake Arc, he was able to see premonitions of the future without the need to focus intensely while also displaying several kilometers of range with the ability-sensing targets from a large distance away, and by the end of Whole-cake, Luffy can see several seconds into the future while focusing intensely, matching the likes of Charlotte Katakuri in this field.

Soru is one of the six techniques of "Rokushiki" that allows superhuman speed. Also known as Shave, this technique allows the users to move at extremely high speeds in order to avoid attacks, as well as to attack at higher speeds and with greater power. It was revealed that the principle of this move was to kick off the ground at least ten times in the blink of an eye.
