Summary

The Godzilla series is a kaiju franchise made by Toho. It features Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and many others. Like most franchises, Godzilla has several different continuities and spawned many comics, mangas, games, TV shows, etc., so, the canon can be confusing.

Godzilla has crossed over with other verses in different kinds of media, including King Kong, Gamera, the Ultra Series, Kamen Rider, Evangelion, Mazinger Z, Gundam, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics among others.

Power of the Verse

  • This verse is very powerful as it has several broken abilities and widely ranges in power. Humans have a standard Athlete level physically, and Street to Wall level with weapons. Some aliens like Kuronuma have Street level feats, while heroes like Zone Angel can fight with villains like the Gold Garoga, who can vaporize his minions for a solid Small Building level.
  • In the original 1954 Godzilla movie, there are Building level+ to Country level feats. By Shin Godzilla, the series made building-busting low-level as it debuted city block and town-busting, with characters hitting Large Country level by the GMK Continuity. By the Godzilla 2000 Continuity, the average monsters were around Large Country level+, due to Godzilla being capable of damaging the Millennian UFO, which survived a crash with Earth at Relativistic+ speeds. By the Kiryu and Final Wars continuities, very often some characters are planetary threats, as even the weakest monsters of this period are Multi-Continent level. Within the Megaguirus Continuity characters reached Dwarf Star level. In the Showa Era, almost from the very beginning, characters reach Large Star level. The First Generation King Ghidorah is said to be invincible and unrivaled in space which directly includes the Garoga Empire despite having the Garoga Nukes, he can also eat comets. More characters at this level are introduced, and forms that significantly increase that level of strength. Finally, at the end of the Showa Era, Solar System level was reached, with feats such as surpassing time and exceeding the strength of the previous arc's villains. In the Heisei Era characters reached higher into that level.
  • Godzilla himself has several impressive feats such as reacting to and shooting a comet carrying Monster X/Kaiser Ghidorah while it was still in space, tanking an absolute zero blast, surviving as nothing but a beating heart, and moving the Earth's tectonic plates from the indirect force of Heisei Godzilla and Larva Battra's battle.
  • Crossover-wise, the universe reaches cosmic to multiversal levels of power, with Godzilla, Kong Kiryu, Mothra, and other kaiju being consistently paired with Universe level+ beings, and power-ups put them at the level of the Multiverse level Gods.
  • Other Media: Other media outlets, such as the Godzilla TV shows, and SD Godzilla World, have Wall level characters as the weakest Godzilla-related media. The Shueisha Godzilla series follows with City Block level characters. Trendmasters Godzilla Series, made building-busting low-level as it debuted city block and town-busting. The Godziban series City level was reached, while The Godzilla Comic, Dark Horse Comics, and TriStar Godzilla series closely follow the sequence in power for the most part with a solid Island level. In the MonsterVerse, A Space Godzilla, Random House, and Godzilla Island, the characters mainly range in power from Large Island level, Country level+, and Multi-Continent level respectively, with top tiers like Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy, Kodansha, The Godzilla Power Hour, IDW, Shogakukan getting Planet level, up to Solar System level. Marvel Comics introduced the top tiers of the verse, with Godzilla himself having several impressive feats, such as battling Thor and the God of Thunder comparing him to the World Serpent, and Hercules having to put in an extreme effort to overpower a simple stomp from him, placing Godzilla at High Universe level. The anime series Godzilla Anime Trilogy deviates by the end of it by having higher-level characters; the same is true for characters like King Ghidorah (Godzilla Anime Trilogy), who is a 4th-dimensional being whose mere presence distorts space and time itself, who cannot be 'killed' on the 3-D level and can manipulate 4-dimensional structures as one of the strongest in-verse characters, placing him at a solid Universe level+. The Godzilla Singular Point anime and novel consistently mention that the general premise is that an entity, "It", who is the true form of Godzilla (and SHIVA), comes from a higher dimension. It is implied that it sees each universe as a dream in which it creates its own physical body and tries to take over. The entity has destroyed thousands of universes, and it seems that it also takes them over physically, as it is explained that it is expanding its domain. Just some of the entities that were part of "It" have been described as connected to countless dimensions (in the context of the quote, it is specifically mathematical dimensions), and it is said that they see things like time and space as paths they can take rather than something they exist within. Additionally, "it" has been stated to view the universe like a dream, or rather dreams within dreams that continue on and on. Overall, the verse is at Hyperverse level at its peak.

  • Showa Continuity: Building level+ to Solar System level between the Original Godzilla movie, Zone Fighter and Destroy All Monsters.
  • Heisei Continuity: Solar System level during Godzilla vs. Biollante, reaching even higher during Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and higher during the sequels.
  • Godzilla 2000 Continuity: Large Country level+.
  • Godzilla vs. Megaguirus Continuity: Dwarf Star level.
  • GMK Continuity: Country level to Large Country level.
  • Kiryu Saga: Small Building level to Multi-Continent level.
  • Final Wars Continuity: Multi-Continent level.
  • Shin Continuity: Wall level to City Block level.

  • Godzillaverse has some notable striking strength feats, as they are capable of destroying Mountains and beyond with their physical attacks. The verse's levels range from Below Average level on the lower ends, to Solar System level on higher ends. Characters had high lifting strength feats, that range from Below Average Human on the lower ends, to Class Z on higher ends.

Ranges from Superhuman to Supersonic+ movement speed, with FTL reactions and combat speed, and MFTL+ speed feats. Several monsters (such as Showa King Ghidorah) are confirmed to have Massively FTL+ flight speed

    Explanations

Many of the terms and concepts utilized in the profiles are uncommon but integral to the franchise since a lot of the crucial information for comprehending the lore is obscured or buried in antiquated sources, unavailable in English, or otherwise hard to come by. Nevertheless, Godzilla has many blogs devoted to explaining its concepts to newcomers so that even a total novice can immediately grasp the essentials.

    Production Eras

The history of the Godzilla Series can be split into 4 eras, with 3 of them following the rule of Japan's current Emperor and 1 with the start of the new millennium in the year 2000. These eras are known as

    • Showa: The era in Japan between 1926 and 1989.
    • Heisei: The era in Japan between 1989 and 2019.
    • Millennium: The era within the Godzilla movies between 2000 and 2004.
    • Reiwa: The current era of Japan that started in 2019.

Characters will often be referred to by the era that they operated in, defined by cultural norms both within the shows and in reality. These norms shape the story and tone of the plots these shows revolve around, giving each era a unique and distinguishable vibe that separates them from each other.

Note: The Millennium era applies exclusively to the Godzilla series, with most other tokusatsu franchises identifying works produced concurrent with the Millennium films to still be in the Heisei series.

    Other Common Terms

    • Kaiju: Kaiju (怪獣 kaijū) is a Japanese word that literally means "strange beast" and is usually translated as "monster" in English. Traditionally, kaiju can refer to any sort of strange creature, but in recent times the word has become associated with a genre of tokusatsu entertainment, specifically Japanese cinema that involves giant monsters. The most powerful kaiju are at times advertently referred to as daikaiju (大怪獣 daikaijū) the prefix dai- emphasizing great power or status and is usually translated as "giant monster."
    • Mecha: In science fiction, mecha (メカ) or mechs are giant robots or machines typically depicted as piloted and as humanoid walking vehicles. Mechas are typically depicted as humanoid mobile robots. The term was first used in Japanese (meka) after shortening the English loanword mekanikaru ('mechanical'), but the meaning in Japanese is more inclusive, and "robot" (robotto) or "giant robot" is the narrower term.
    • Kaijin: Kaijin (怪人) is a Japanese word that means "mysterious person." In Japanese, kaijin is a relatively broad term that encompasses any fictional human-like character that possesses strange supernatural abilities and is usually used to refer to villains.
    • Hiiroo: (ヒイロ) is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. Any individual of colorful appearance and extraordinary prowess.
    • Earth Defenders: Earth Defenders tolerate humans but do not make a point to defend them - they see the Aliens as a blight on Earth and destroying them is their primary goal. They protect the world and their home of Monster Island from any foreign threat including humans.
    • Divine Monsters: These monsters are/have been worshipped by humans, and are aware of their divine power (figuratively and literally) and exert it, both to reward and punish, some being more benevolent than others. Most of them defend the cosmos itself, and therefore often ally with Earth Defenders.
    • Demonic Monsters: A demon is a supernatural evil being, that usually follows the commands of a demonic deity, whose principal motivations can vary, but usually tortured souls and kaiju for eternity in Hell.
    • GDF (Global Defense Force): The Global Defense Force has built many mechs to defend mankind from monsters, be they from Earth or Outer Space.
    • Aliens: These Alien monsters do the bidding of different alien races. Their primary goal is to conquer Earth by any means. They are willing to destroy both humans and kaiju from the other factions alike to achieve their goals, and with the support of their military, they are prepared to crush any resistance from the planet.
    • Lawless Monsters: Due to various reasons, these monsters merely follow their own needs, making no allies and attacking everything that threatens them. Some have a lust for power that comes before all other concerns, all working for their own, sinister agenda: to destroy everything in their path. Some of them are bent on world domination, while others merely destroy what they dislike and if unchecked, could destroy human civilization.
    • Independent Forces: These monsters are under mind control to obey the power of crazy scientists or any other races that came from Earth, and independently of the period, who have the intention to take control over the planet. These creatures are, therefore, extremely dangerous.
    • Keizer: A Kaiser, also spelled as Keizer, is an extremely rare type of mutant who is granted additional powers due to the fusion of M-base and human DNA. In addition to the standard mutant abilities of superhuman strength, heightened reflexes, superior coordination, and increased agility, Kaisers can control any other life form by telepathic means if that organism has an M-base.
    • Shobijin: Are tiny twin priestesses of Mothra who first appeared in the 1961 film, Mothra. They have been featured in nearly all of the character's film appearances since, as well as in several comics and video games. While their names and portrayals have varied over the years, Mothra's Shobijin acts as her link to humanity, interceding on her behalf with the rest of the world. The Shobijin can telepathically communicate with Mothra and translate her messages and often sing to summon her or pray for her aid.
    • Mutants: are the genetic descendents of both humans and Xiliens. They were trained as a form of highly elite soldiers by the EDF under Commander Kumasaka. In Godzilla: Final Wars, all but Ozaki (and later Kazama) fell under the control of X. The most notable Mutant is Ozaki, who used his Keizer Energy to revive Godzilla.

    Showa Era
    • Showa Continuity: The first Godzilla film began the Showa era of the kaiju industry, with Godzilla being the usual kaiju affiliated with this era. During the beginning of the Showa era, Godzilla was mainly antagonistic in nature, taking on the likes of Anguirus and Mothra. By the time of Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Godzilla adopted what would soon become his most famous image: a heroic monster, battling terrible villains with other monsters by his side. Toho produced a significant number of tokusatsu television programs in the Showa era, one of which, Zone Fighter, even featured appearances by Godzilla and some of his other monster co-stars and is considered part of the official continuity of the Showa Godzilla films.

    Heisei Era
    • Heisei Continuity: The Heisei series of Godzilla films lasted from 1984 to 1995, and has also been nicknamed the VS. Series (VSシリーズ) in Japan due to the word VS. being featured in most of the films' titles. The Heisei series follows a different continuity from the Showa films, ignoring every movie except the original 1954 Godzilla. The Heisei series ran for a total of seven films, with the last film, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

    Millennium Era
    • Godzilla 2000: Millennium: This film does not refer to the events of any film before or after it. All that is established is that Godzilla has been attacking Japan for some time prior to the film's events. Godzilla.jp's entry for Godzilla 2000: Millennium confirms that it is in fact a direct sequel to the original Godzilla, and that the Godzilla featured in the film is the second Godzilla in that continuity, after the original 1954 Godzilla.
    • Godzilla vs. Megaguirus: Although Godzilla in this film sports the same design as in Godzilla 2000: Millennium, the two films do not share continuity. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus shares partial continuity with the original Godzilla, as Godzilla still attacked and destroyed Tokyo in 1954. However, in this continuity, the Oxygen Destroyer was never used and Godzilla simply swam out to sea, only to return and attack Tokai in 1966. Godzilla was not seen again until 1996, when he attacked a plasma reactor in Osaka.
    • Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack: Another standalone film, GMK is a direct sequel to the original Godzilla. In this continuity, Godzilla was killed by the Oxygen Destroyer in 1954, but the JSDF claimed credit for killing him in order to avoid facing ridicule and assure the citizens of Japan that they were safe. Eventually, Godzilla was brought back to life and possessed by the restless souls of those killed by the Japanese military in World War II, and returned in 2002 to destroy Japan. This film also makes a passing reference to the 1998 American film, as Taizo Tachibana mentions early on that a giant reptilian monster similar to Godzilla recently attacked New York City. A soldier asks if the creature was Godzilla, while another responds that the Americans think so, but the Japanese doubt it.
    • Kiryu Saga Continuity: * Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. - These two films are the only entries in the Millennium series to share a continuity, and are often collectively referred to as the "Kiryu Saga." Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla is a direct sequel to the original Godzilla and establishes that Godzilla first appeared in 1954 and was killed by the Oxygen Destroyer. The only change from the events of the original film is that Godzilla's skeleton remained intact instead of being disintegrated. This film also references the events of Mothra and The War of the Gargantuas, including stock footage from both films. The next film, Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. is a direct sequel to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and makes further references to Mothra, even featuring the character Shinichi Chujo. The events of the film Space Amoeba are also referenced when the corpse of Kamoebas is found on a beach. It is also mentioned that another Kamoebas was seen sometime in the 1980's. Supplementary books for the film establish that the events of several other non-Godzilla Showa era kaiju films occurred in this continuity, including Rodan, Varan, Gorath, Atragon, Dogora, Frankenstein vs. Baragon, and King Kong Escapes.
    • Godzilla: Final Wars: Despite its numerous nods to previous films and inclusion of stock footage, is an entirely standalone film that shares continuity with no other films. In this continuity, Godzilla first appeared in 1954, prompting the formation of the Earth Defense Force. In the following years, the EDF battled against the countless monsters appearing around the Earth. At an undisclosed point prior to the main events of the film, the Gotengo lured Godzilla to Antarctica and managed to trap him underneath the ice. For the next several decades, Godzilla remained imprisoned in Area G while humanity was kept safe from other monsters by the EDF. It is not disclosed in what year the main events of Final Wars take place, as supplementary materials only refer to it as the year 20XX, but it is presumed to be sometime in the near future.

    Reiwa Era
    • Shin Godzilla: is a complete reboot to the franchise in which Godzilla attacks Japan for the first time in the modern day. After a disaster in the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Rando Yaguchi proposes that the culprit is a giant creature, only for his suggestion to be laughed off. However, Yaguchi is proven right when a huge gilled creature swims up the Tama River and comes ashore in Ota Ward of Tokyo. The JSDF is unable to mobilize in time and the creature escapes after leaving a trail of destruction. Now, Yaguchi and a ragtag team of bureaucratic rebels band together to find a method of defeating the creature, dubbed Godzilla, as he continues to evolve and returns to menace Tokyo again.
    • Godzilla Minus One: In 1945, near the end of World War II, kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima lands his Mitsubishi A6M Zero at the Japanese base on Odo Island. Lead mechanic Sōsaku Tachibana deduces that Shikishima had fled from his duty by feigning technical issues. That night, Godzilla, a large dinosaur-like creature, attacks the garrison. Shikishima freezes up and cannot bring himself to shoot the monster from his plane and is knocked unconscious. Tachibana, the only other survivor of the attack, blames Shikishima for failing to act.

Humanity and alien races had developed High-level technology that includes spaceships to travel between the solar system, time machines, mental control machines, armament capable of hurting the kaiju such as the hyper maser cannons, chemical weapons that can destroy entire cities at the molecular level like the Oxygen Destroyer and finally the definitive weapons are known as Mechas to fight the Kaiju. The technology of alien races ranges from weapons able to hurt the kaiju to being able to destroy Large Planets such as Peaceland with ease.

    Scaling

The scaling of the Showa Era is the following:

King Ghidorah (1st Generation) = 3.296 Quettakilotons (High 4-C, Large Star level)

Super Jikiro = 10x Jikiro = 1.37 Foe (High 4-C, Large Star level)

    King Caesar's Prism Eye = 10x = 13.79 Foe (High 4-C, Large Star level)

    Mechagodzilla 2's Finger Missiles = 5x Mechagodzilla 1 = 68.95 Foe (4-B, Solar System level)

    Car Compactor = 10,000x = 689.53 KiloFoe (4-B, Solar System level)

Also, King Ghidorah likely scales to the Car Compactor as he is said to be invincible and unrivaled in space which directly includes the Garoga Empire.

The scaling of the Heisei Era is the following:

    Godzilla (Pre-Supercharge) = 68.95 Foe (4-B, Solar System level)

    Godzilla (Post-Supercharge) = x200 Godzilla (Pre-Supercharge) = 13.79 KiloFoe (4-B, Solar System level)

    Mechagodzilla = x10,000 Godzilla (Post-Supercharge) = 137.90 MegaFoe (4-B, Solar System level)

    Post-Rodan Boost Godzilla = x2 Godzilla = 275.81 MegaFoe (4-B, Solar System level)

    MOGUERA = 6x Super Mechagodzilla = 1.65 GigaFoe (4-B, Solar System level)
