Summary

Idea and Design Works, LLC, also known as IDW Comics or simply IDW, is an American comic book publisher. IDW began publishing Godzilla comics in 2011, with the most recent series concluding in 2016. IDW did not publish any new comics utilizing the Godzilla license from 2017 to 2020; however, it signed a new licensing deal with Toho during that time and republished Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters as a complete volume, followed by Godzilla: Complete Rulers of Earth Vol. 2 in the summer of 2019. It republished Godzilla: The Half-Century War in August 2020 and republished Godzilla: History's Greatest Monster in January 2021. It will also republish three of its miniseries: Godzilla: Legends, Godzilla in Hell, and Godzilla: Rage Across Time, in May 2021 as part of a volume titled Godzilla: Unnatural Disasters, and three more miniseries: Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths, Godzilla: Cataclysm, and Godzilla: Oblivion, as part of a volume titled Godzilla: World of Monsters in August. On December 2, 2020, it was announced that Toho and IDW had signed a new publishing deal that would result in new Godzilla comics being published by the company beginning in April 2021. This deal also covered non-comic media such as art books, journals, puzzles, and coloring books.

IDW's Godzilla comics consist of three ongoing series and eight five-issue miniseries, as well as a series of quarterly one-shots. The three ongoing series - Kingdom of Monsters, Ongoing, and Rulers of Earth - all take place in the same continuity, while the miniseries are each standalone and take place in their own individual continuities. Rulers of Earth holds the status as the longest-running Godzilla comic of all time at 25 issues, one issue longer than Marvel's Godzilla, King of the Monsters.

Power of the Verse

This verse is very powerful as it has several broken abilities and ranges widely in power. In the main continuity, almost from the very beginning, characters reach Town level. The mini-series made town-busting low-level as it debuted characters with Small City level, and soon surpassing Large Mountain level with the Rage Across Time Saga and reaching Island level with the Monsters & Protectors Saga. By the the end of the main saga first part, the average monsters are now Multi-Continent level, with Godzilla and Battra clash splitting the clouds above North America. In Godzilla Ongoing Saga Large Planet level was reached, as very often there are characters who are planetary threats, with feats such as Godzilla overpowering a forcefield generated by a black hole. Finally, in Godzilla In Hell Saga the top tier characters have reached Dwarf Star level+ with feats such as SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla destroying the Earth-Moon system with a clash of beams.

  • Crossover-wise, the universe reaches cosmic to multiversal levels of power, with Godzilla, Kong Kiryu, Mothra, and other kaiju being consistently on pair with Universe level+ beings, and power-ups puts them at the level of the Multiverse level Gods.

Godzillaverse has some notable striking strength feats, as they are capable of destroying Mountains and beyond with their physical attacks. The verse's levels range from Below Average Class on the lower ends, to Solar System level on higher ends. Characters had high lifting strength feats, that range from Below Average Human on the lower ends, to Class G on higher ends.

Ranges from Superhuman to Supersonic+ movement speed, with FTL reactions and combat speed, and MFTL+ speed feats.

Explanations

  • Kaiju: Kaiju (怪獣 kaijū) is a Japanese word that literally means "strange beast" and is usually translated as "monster" in English. Traditionally, kaiju can refer to any sort of strange creature, but in recent times the word has become associated with a genre of tokusatsu entertainment, specifically Japanese cinema that involves giant monsters. The most powerful kaiju are at times advertently referred to as daikaiju (大怪獣 daikaijū) the prefix dai- emphasizing great power or status and is usually translated as "giant monster."
  • Mecha: In science fiction, mecha (メカ) or mechs are giant robots or machines typically depicted as piloted and as humanoid walking vehicles. Mechas are typically depicted as humanoid mobile robots. The term was first used in Japanese (meka) after shortening the English loanword mekanikaru ('mechanical'), but the meaning in Japanese is more inclusive, and "robot" (robotto) or "giant robot" is the narrower term.
  • Kaijin: Kaijin (怪人) is a Japanese word that means "mysterious person." In Japanese, kaijin is a relatively broad term that encompasses any fictional human-like character that possesses strange supernatural abilities and is usually used to refer to villains.
  • Hiiroo: (ヒイロ) is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. Any individual of colorful appearance and extraordinary prowess.
  • Earth Defenders: Earth Defenders tolerate humans but do not make a point to defend them - they see the Aliens as a blight on Earth and destroying them is their primary goal. They protect the world and their home of Monster Island from any foreign threat including humans.
  • Divine Monsters: These monsters are/have been worshipped by humans, and are aware of their divine power (figuratively and literally) and exert it, both to reward and punish, some being more benevolent than others. Most of them defend the cosmos itself, and therefore often ally with Earth Defenders.
  • Demonic Monsters: A demon is a supernatural evil being, that usually follows the commands of a demonic deity, whose principal motivations can vary, but usually tortured souls and kaiju for eternity in Hell.
  • GDF (Global Defense Force): The Global Defense Force has built many mechs to defend mankind from monsters, be they from Earth or Outer Space.
  • Aliens: These Alien monsters do the bidding of different alien races. Their primary goal is to conquer Earth by any means. They are willing to destroy both humans and kaiju from the other factions alike to achieve their goals, and with the support of their military, they are prepared to crush any resistance from the planet.
  • Lawless Monsters: Due to various reasons, these monsters merely follow their own needs, making no allies and attacking everything that threatens them. Some have a lust for power that comes before all other concerns, all working for their own, sinister agenda: to destroy everything in their path. Some of them are bent on world domination, while others merely destroy what they dislike and if unchecked, could destroy human civilization.
  • Independent Forces: These monsters are under mind control to obey the power of crazy scientists or any other races that came from Earth, and independently of the period, who have the intention to take control over the planet. These creatures are, therefore, extremely dangerous.
  • Shobijin: Are tiny twin priestesses of Mothra who first appeared in the 1961 film, Mothra. They have been featured in nearly all of the character's film appearances since, as well as in several comics and video games. While their names and portrayals have varied over the years, Mothra's Shobijin acts as her link to humanity, interceding on her behalf with the rest of the world. The Shobijin can telepathically communicate with Mothra and translate her messages and often sing to summon her or pray for her aid.

Godzilla awakened one day from underneath a beach near Japan. The military attempted to kill Godzilla with an atomic bomb, but only made him more powerful and granted him the ability to fire atomic breath. Elsewhere around the world, the monsters Rodan, Anguirus, Kumonga, and Battra appeared and began to wreak havoc. Eventually, all of the monsters converged on the United States and battled each other, causing untold destruction. The U.S. government built a giant robot, Mechagodzilla, to battle the monsters while in Asia, a monk awakened King Ghidorah to battle them. Godzilla arrived in Washington D.C., where he was attacked by King Ghidorah. Mechagodzilla, piloted by Steven Woods, arrived and defeated both monsters, earning Woods a hero's recognition. Meanwhile, the evil psychic twins Minette and Mallory took control of Rodan and Battra and came to the U.S. to try and control Godzilla. Godzilla managed to overcome and defeat both monsters and later returned to the sea, leaving human civilization devastated and rushing to prepare for future monster attacks.

In this follow-up to Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, Godzilla appeared in Washington D.C. once again, where the ex-British Special Forces agent known as Boxer, whose daughter was killed by Godzilla, was hired to protect a wealthy Japanese businesswoman's daughter. Boxer's client was killed during their attempted escape, so Boxer decided to join with his former acquaintances to form the "Kaiju Kill Crew," a group of mercenaries hired to bring down attacking kaiju. After several successful missions, Boxer's crew was sent to California, where a billionaire industrialist had just unleashed his new Mechagodzilla to battle Godzilla. After Godzilla defeated Kiryu, Boxer and his team tried to bring Godzilla down as he headed north along the Pacific Coast to Seattle. But when the space monsters Hedorah, Gigan, SpaceGodzilla and Monster X arrived on Earth, Boxer was forced to temporary abandon his vendetta against Godzilla to defeat the space monsters. While Kiryu freed the monsters held on Monster Island, Godzilla battled and defeated Hedorah in California, then traveled to New York to take on SpaceGodzilla and Monster X. There, he was joined by Kiryu and Kumonga, who were both promptly defeated. But when the immobilized Kiryu froze SpaceGodzilla with the Absolute Zero Cannon, Godzilla took the opportunity to defeat his extraterrestrial clone with a blast of his atomic breath. With only him and Godzilla still standing, Monster X transformed into Keizer Ghidorah and quickly overwhelmed Godzilla. Thankfully, Rodan arrived and decapitated one of Keizer Ghidorah's heads with a sonic boom from his wings. With Rodan's help, Godzilla severed another one of Keizer Ghidorah's heads, then killed him by crushing his remaining head with his foot. As Godzilla started walking back to the ocean, Boxer jumped into Godzilla's mouth in a last-ditch attempt to hurt him using a miniature version of his "headache gun." This action only slightly irritated Godzilla, at the cost of Boxer's life.

Godzilla from Kingdom of Monsters and Ongoing returns once again in Godzilla: Rulers of Earth.

Godzilla suddenly appeared in Tokyo in 1954, setting the entire city ablaze. Ota Murakami and his friend Kentaro Yoshihara were sent in as part of a JSDF platoon to deal with the crisis. The two managed to save countless civilians from Godzilla, and barely escaped the disaster area with their lives. A few days later, a special chemical weapon was detonated in Tokyo Bay and seemingly killed Godzilla. However, Godzilla was soon spotted elsewhere in the Pacific Ocean and Ota and Kentaro were recruited into the Anti-Megalosaurus Force (AMF), a special international military force dedicated to hunting giant monsters. In 1967, Godzilla was sighted in Vietnam during the height of the Vietnam War. The AMF deployed a unit of Maser Cannons to battle the creature, but their assault was interrupted by the appearance of another monster, Anguirus. Godzilla and Anguirus battled each other until Anguirus found himself overwhelmed and decided to flee. As the Maser Tanks prepared to fire at Godzilla, their view was obscured by the smoke from a bombing run and Godzilla escaped. In 1975, Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, Battra, Hedorah, Ebirah, Megalon and Kumonga appeared in Ghana, prompting various elite AMF teams to respond. There, Ota discovered that Dr. Deverich, a former AMF scientist, had stolen an experimental device and weaponized it to attract monsters, intending to sell it to the criminal underworld. During the chaos, Deverich attracted all of the monsters to his location, allowing him to escape while the monsters overran the AMF's forces. The AMF's commander, Colonel Schooler, was killed in the attack, only strengthening Ota's hatred of Godzilla. In 1987, Godzilla appeared in Bombay, drawn there by Deverich's transmitter. Ota and Kentaro traveled there to hunt down Deverich while the AMF deployed their latest weapon, Mechagodzilla. Ota and Kentaro apprehended Deverich, but not before he activated his new more powerful monster transmitter, which summoned SpaceGodzilla to the city. SpaceGodzilla severely damaged Mechagodzilla and began to overpower Godzilla. Ota took command of the damaged Mechagodzilla and used it to destroy the giant crystals giving SpaceGodzilla his power, toppling it onto him. Godzilla used this opportunity to blast SpaceGodzilla with his atomic breath, killing him. In 2002, the AMF had developed two new anti-Godzilla weapons; Kiryu, a new Mechagodzilla, and the Dimension Tide, an artificial black hole gun. Godzilla was lured to Antarctica, but the space monsters King Ghidorah and Gigan, who had been drawn to Earth by Deverich's transmitter years ago, arrived there as well. While the Dimension Tide prepared to fire, Ota wished Kentaro farewell and took command of Kiryu, assisting Godzilla in battling the space monsters. After the Dimension Tide was fired, Kiryu and Godzilla ensured that both space monsters were banished into the resulting black hole. Before Godzilla could leave, Ota restrained Godzilla with Kiryu and yelled at Godzilla, telling him to look at him. As Kiryu was torn apart by the force of the black hole, the cockpit was exposed, allowing Ota to briefly make eye contact with Godzilla. Kiryu then released Godzilla, causing both monsters to apparently be pulled into the black hole. However, Godzilla escaped and was seen swimming away after the black hole dissipated.

The series chronicles Godzilla's descent into and eventual escape from Hell, where he encounters demonic versions of his past foes as well as terrifying new enemies.

In the year 1274, all able-bodied warriors were called to put aside their political differences to go to Hakata Bay to defend against the Mongol invaders who had gained control of the monsters Gigan and Megalon. The warriors Gorou Suda and Akio, who had been bitter enemies until that point were then tasked with taking down the monsters. The rest of Japan's forces were planned to defend against the Mongols while Akio and Gorou climbed Mount Purotekuta to meet the Shobijin, who would help them save Japan. At the summit, they were faced with a swarm of enormous crabs called Heikegani. After defeating them, the monster Yamata no Orochi rose from the ground, but the Shobijin assured the warriors that they need not defeat Orochi, but control it before taking Gorou with them, putting a spell on Akio's arrow and leaving her to fight Orochi. The Shobijin then gave Gorou an idol that they assured him would put Orochi under his control as long as he was holding it. With Orochi under their control, Akio and Gorou began to head for the bay, but were interrupted by a blast from a mythical monster that Akio knew as Gojira. It quickly defeated Orochi, causing Akio to use one of her arrows to anger it. They then rode as fast as they could to Hakata Bay, with Gojira close behind. Just as Megalon and Gigan had reached the Emperor's castle, Gojira arrived and shifted his attention on to his new opponents. In the battle below the monsters, Akio noticed the Khan general, who referred to himself as a "Nebulan" in need of the planet, using some type of device to control the monsters, which she destroyed with a well placed arrow. With no direction, Gojira quickly defeated the threats and swam out into the bay. Gorou and Akio then put aside their differences and vowed to work together to defend their homeland. In the year 2016, Dr. Benjamin Thompson and Nikki Kasumi were visiting the sight of the battle against the Mongols at Hakata Bay, where they were looking for evidence that monsters sank the Mongol fleet and not a typhoon. Underwater, they found that the ships had been super-heated, petrified, and preserved, leading them to believe it was the work of the monster then known as Godzilla. Katsumi had a hard time believing Thompson's theory, but he insisted that they keep looking.

When Dr. Elias Talbert successfully opens a doorway into another dimension, he and his colleagues find this alternate Earth overrun with kaiju, the largest and most terrifying being Godzilla. Godzilla's nemesis King Ghidorah escapes into the original dimension, forcing the humans to bring Godzilla through as well. However, Godzilla soon proves the greater threat while King Ghidorah is converted into a cyborg to fight on behalf of humanity. To make matters worse, inhabitants of the alternate Earth soon send the rest of their monsters through as well.

The comic's story follows eighth grader Cedric Nishimura, who with the help of his classmates and the Shobijin of Infant Island attempts to prevent Godzilla from destroying mankind in retaliation for the environmentally destructive activities of the Linival Corporation. The Linival Corporation has its own plan to deal with Godzilla: a genetically-engineered plant hybrid clone dubbed Biollante.

is a quarterly series of one-shot comics by IDW Publishing, each focusing on a battle between different kaiju. The first installment of the series, Vs. Hedorah, was released on June 30, 2021. The first five installments of the series each pit Godzilla against a different foe, while those afterward instead feature unusual pairings of kaiju fighting each other.

In the comic, the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa uses the Multiversal Focus to travel to a reality where her nemeses, the Power Rangers, do not exist, allowing her to conquer it without opposition. However, she arrives in a universe where the Xilien invaders are repeatedly thwarted in their attempts to conquer Earth by the monster Godzilla. When the Power Rangers follow Rita to this reality, Rita and the Xiliens combine their monster armies in an attempt to destroy both of their enemies.

The series is set in the 1500s and recounts a lost voyage of Sir Francis Drake in which the English explorer and his crew encountered Godzilla and other kaiju on the high seas.

The series follows a professor and writer named Dr. Yuko Honda, who tries to convince the rest of humanity that Godzilla is their only hope to defeat a bizarre new kaiju called Zoospora.
