Well, I can't exactly call them misguided. But soon, they shall know this devil's power. A power greater than they ever imagined. The power of a son of Sparda.

That day, if our positions were switched... Would our fates be different? Would I have your life, and you mine? Let's settle this... Dante.
~ Vergil

Summary

Vergil was one of the twin sons born from the demon Sparda and human Eva and is the main antagonist of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening and a playable character in its special edition. After the demon invasion, when a younger Vergil managed to survive alone and mistakenly believed that his mother abandoned him during the crisis, he started to deny his humanity and embraced his demonic legacy, in contrast to his younger brother's embrace of the human side and initial rejection against the devil. Stoic and reserved, Vergil displays a willingness to do anything in his quest to obtain the power of his father, Sparda.

In an unknown conclusion to a confrontation with Mundus in the secret ending to Devil May Cry 3, he is corrupted. He becomes the Dark Angel encountered in Devil May Cry, known as Nelo Angelo (also alternatively spelled Nero Angelo). After numerous conflicts throughout the game, he is finally defeated by Dante.

He later makes a playable appearance in Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, where he is featured in his campaign detailing his actions in the city of Fortuna decades before the events of 4 and shortly before 3.

It is revealed in Devil May Cry 5, years after his last encounter with Dante as Nelo Angelo, Vergil had survived and is now free from Mundus control, but is significantly weakened as a result. As the hooded figure who took the Yamato, ripping the Devil Bringer from his son Nero in the process, Vergil is the final antagonist of the game after both the newcomer V and Urizen merge back together as himself, both revealed to be his human and demon halves.

Demon Physiology (Mid Tier & Sparda Heritage), Martial Arts, Master Swordsman, Psychometry (Scales to Dante, mastered Beowulf when he killed him and got his powers in a Devil Arm form[1] and masterfully handled Yamato when demons were sent by Mundus to kill him and his family when he was only 8 years old[2]), Afterimage Creation, Forcefield Creation, Light Manipulation (With Beowulf), Wind Manipulation (With Force Edge, can create a whirlwind vacuum[3] when the sword is thrown), Summoning and Homing Attack (Can summon spectral swords[3][4] that can attack his opponents from all direction), Analytical Prediction (Can match Dante in a fight, who is capable of noticing patterns in his opponent's style and adapt to fight accordingly.), Space-Time Manipulation, Durability Negation, Weapon Creation and Control, Forcefield Creation, Portal Creation, Resurrection, Summoning, Fissionism, Memory Manipulation, Power Nullification and Conceptual Manipulation (Type 2) (With the Yamato. The Yamato's blade is sharp enough to cut through dimensions[5], can create magical swords[6][4], is capable of creating a shield[7][8][9][10][11] to protect the user, can create portals[12], was capable of resurrecting Nero[13] and the sword also came to help Vergil when he was a kid[14], Sanctus used it to nullify Nero's power and his resistance to absorption, allowing the Saviour to absorb him, can separate man from demon and power from heart, can change people's memories and give them a physical form[15] and was used to separate Nero from the Savior when the sword is thrown on the chest of the Savior, since Nero's body and soul was absorbed and melted together with the others bodies and souls inside the Savior and becoming one single existence[16][17] with him when he fought against Sanctus and Savior in the Advent Chamber[18]) and Sealing (With Yamato, It can cut through and create portals between the Human and Demon World[19][20][21], said dimensions had their connection sealed by Sparda in the past[20][22][23], and since Sparda sealed the dimensions in the past, demons are no longer able to travel between the Demon World and the Human World[22][24][25]. Vergil and Dante eventually sealed the Qliphoth roots' portal with the Yamato[26] to stop them from tearing Red Grave City apart and from merging the Demon World with the Human World)

All previous abilities as before but at a much higher level, except for Yamato and Force Edge, Illusion Creation (Disguised himself as his brother when he appeared in the mirror), Fire Manipulation (Can attack with a blue fire and enhance his physicals attacks with it)

All previous resistances at a much higher level, High Tier Demon and Sparda Heritage Resistances, Enhanced Resistance to Regeneration Negation (Can still heal from Dante's attacks, despite him being capable of overcoming his opponent's regeneration mid battle, like when he couldn't inflict permanent damage to Chen but eventually was able to, killing him in the process)

Attack Potency: Star level (Easily defeated Dante at the beginning of the game, later defeated Beowulf and stalemated Dante after he awakened his Devil Trigger), up to at least Multi-Solar System level (Grew in power during the events of the 3rd game, defeated Arkham alongside his brother and reached a power high enough to even defeat Mundus, who was weakened at that time, only losing to him because of his wounds from his last fight against Dante), higher with Force Edge (The sword is capable of giving Vergil another portion of Sparda's power[32], matched Dante by the end of the game). His attacks with Yamato ignore conventional durability | Low Multiverse level (Matched Dante in Devil May Cry 1 on skills and power[33] and was stated to be stronger than him on their first encounter[34] while also being capable of killing him at the same time[35], and was also stated to be growing stronger and more skilled in each fight[36] and when he removed his dark helmet, Nelo Angelo's vision and reaction speed increased[37]) | Low Multiverse level (As Urizen, he effortlessly defeated early game Dante. Later he ate the Qliphoth Fruit, the source of Mundus's powers. After being fully revived, he could fight on equal terms with late-game Dante after he awakened his own Sin Devil Trigger). His attacks with Yamato ignore conventional durability

Speed: At least Massively Hypersonic+ with at least FTL Combat and Reaction speed (Comparable to Dante, who could block and dodge the Damned Rook Laser. Spun the Yamato several times in the time it took bullets fired by Dante to reach him, with both brothers fighting each other fast enough to create an air bubble and view raindrops as frozen), up to at least FTL (Matched Dante by the end of the game), higher with Force Edge | Immeasurable (Comparable to DMC1 Dante and was growing faster each round and when he removed his dark helmet, Nelo Angelo's vision and reaction speed increased[37]) | Immeasurable (Can keep up with Dante after he awakened his Sin Devil Trigger)

Lifting Strength: Class K (Much stronger than Dante, who on his earlier days as a mercenary, was capable of casually ripping out spines[38] which require at least this amount of force. Also much superior to Nero, who can lift and swing around demons such as Berial[30] and Bael[39] with little difficulty), up to at least Class M (Superior to Mundus Generals, which should be capable to stop Savior's hand), higher with Force Edge | Immeasurable (Far stronger than before, stronger than DMC1 Dante in their first round[34] and eventually he grew even stronger on each fight[36]) | Immeasurable (Far stronger than before, comparable to Dante)

Striking Strength: Star level, up to at least Multi-Solar System level, higher with Force Edge | Low Multiverse level (Can hurt DMC1 Dante and eventually grow more stronger on each fight) | Low Multiverse level (Can hurt Dante with his punches)

Durability: Star level (Took numerous blows from Dante), up to at least Multi-Solar System level, higher with Force Edge | Low Multiverse level (Took attacks from DMC1 Dante and eventually grow more durability on each fight) | Low Multiverse level (Can endure attacks from Dante)

Stamina: Superhuman (As a Demon, Vergil can last hours in battle without pause, can fight entire hordes of demons and fights against Demon Bosses without rest or relevant signs of fatigue, only showing it against prolonged fights against those who were comparable to him and showed to need only mere seconds to recover. Scales to Dante, who showed to need only mere seconds to recover after the combat[40] and was also shown to recover his stamina and energy when he is in Devil Trigger in middle of combat[41]) | Superhuman (Dante and Vergil fought against each other for 39 days straight in the Underworld from June 15 to July 24 while having extremely short breaks[26])

Range: Extended Melee Range normally. Tens of Meters with projectiles, several Kilometers away with Sensing (Sensed Lady's presence when she entered the Temen-ni-gru[42] and scale to Dante, who sensed him on top of the Temen-ni-gru tower[43]), likely at least Hundreds of Meters with Space-Time Manipulation (Should scale well above Dante, who after making a imperfect technique was capable to cut the Hell's Gate from a far distance[44]) and Low Multiversal with Portal Creation via Yamato (Can create portals in the Demon World while in the Human World[19][20][21]) | Varies from Extended Melee Range to Tens of Meters with projectiles and attacks | Varies from Extended Melee Range to Tens of Meters with projectiles and at least Interdimensional, Likely Low Multiversal with Sensing (Can sense killing intent from another dimension[45]) | Varies from Extended Melee Range to Tens of Meters with projectiles and energy attacks (Scale to Dante, who Devil Trigger Explosion destroyed the top of a skyscraper), Planetary with Shockwaves (Can create powerful shock waves enough to violently shake the planet earth[28]) and likely at least Hundreds of Meters with Space-Time Manipulation (Should scale well above Dante, who after making a imperfect technique was able to cut the Hell's Gate from a far-enough distance[44]), Interdimensional to Low Multiversal with Portal Creation (Can create portals in the Demon World while in the Human World[19][20][21] and vice versa, even in the form of broken shards, as seen when both DMC2 Dante and Balrog used them to escape the Demon World to get back into the Human World[27])

Standard Equipment:

Yamato DMC5SE

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, Devil Arms File — Yamato: "A memento from Vergil’s father. This samurai-esque sword’s blade is said to cut through anything."

This is Vergil's primary weapon Yamato. It ignores conventional durability. Examples of this are when Yamato pierced through Nero's Devil Bringer which was supposed to be an indestructible demonic arm. And cut open a dimensional wall to aid Dante against Arkham, and has many showings of spatial cutting. Yamato has also been shown to be capable of slicing targets dozens of meters away with ease.

Beowulf DMC5

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, Devil Arms File — Beowulf: "Flash gauntlets and greaves. This set boosts Vergil’s attack and speed, making him a powerhouse."

Flash gauntlets and greaves, which had enough power to launch Beowulf into the air from an uppercut and slice him in half with an axe kick. It also demonstrates Vergil's skill in hand-to-hand combat. Lunar Phase and Beowulf Combo B.

Force Edge

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, Devil Arms File — Force Edge: "A sword magically imbued with Sparda's power. A powerful sword with great hidden potential."

A blade similar in power to Rebellion. It is the sealed form of the sword wielded by Sparda himself; Vergil dual-wields it with Yamato in combat. Vergil is capable of throwing the Force Edge with such power; it creates a whirlwind vacuum and sucks any enemies in carving them up. Vergil is also capable of stabbing at tremendously high speeds with this weapon. Vergil can also use energy slashes when wielding Force Edge.

Summoned Swords

Devil May Cry 4, Yamato — Summoned Swords: "Summon a magical blade and fling it towards a foe, piercing the enemy through sheer force of will.

Vergil conjures a spectral sword that bears a resemblance to Force Edge and launches it at high speeds against his enemies. Vergil is skilled in their usage circling himself with the blades and being able to shoot them out afterward if he wants, being able to summon them to surround an enemy eventually impaling them and making them rain towards an enemy also. He has also shown that he can create swords of different sizes and can wield one himself.

Mirage Edge 5SE

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, Mirage Edge: A weapon shaped from Vergil's own infernal energy. There's something about this blade—its shape and attacks—that resembles Force Edge, the sword his father wielded so long ago.

Vergil conjures a spectral sword that bears a resemblance to Force Edge, except this time to use for offensive combat instead of using it as a ranged projectile, dual-wielding it alongside Yamato. Vergil uses it in the same exact manner as he used the Force Edge, using it as a replacement.

Intelligence: Gifted, extremely knowledgeable about the demonic world and its legends, and also able to master new weapons with ease. | Virtually Mindless, slaving to Mundus's will, but retains enough of his combat skill to fight Dante on equal terms | Gifted.

Weaknesses: Dangerously overconfident. Vergil can sometimes become a little too obsessed with beating Dante to show his superiority | Seeing items from his past causes him pain. Remains obsessed with defeating his brother Dante | He retains his overconfidence and obsession with defeating Dante. Nevertheless, Vergil introspects at the end of the story; he reconciles with his twin and even accepts his help while continuing their sibling rivalry peacefully (Though he still shows considerable annoyance towards Dante and his antics).

Devil Trigger is a state where Vergil utilizes the devilish portion of his bloodline to transform into a demonic form—activated at some point in his life before his reunion with Dante.

Much like his brother, not only can Vergil instantly activate Devil Trigger, he can also charge up demonic energy and release it to simultaneously damage enemies and transform. This is called Devil Trigger Explosion.

All Devil Trigger forms give Vergil increased attack, defense, speed, healing, and passive Fear Manipulation.

Base Devil Trigger: Vergil's natural Devil Trigger gained sometime before his reunion with Dante. This Devil Trigger is the most basic of the Devil Trigger forms and can be accessed anytime Vergil wishes without a Devil Arm. In addition, it gives Vergil a balanced boost to all stats.

  • Sin Devil Trigger: The Strongest Devil Form that Vergil has access. He gained it after his human and demon selves reunited together into one. It is a powerful form that awakens his true inner demonic heritage. It gives Vergil a further dramatic increase in attack, range, defense, speed, and regeneration. Additionally, he also gains the ability to fly and even create a doppelganger that can replicate all of his moves or act independently.

Summoned Swords: As said before, Vergil can summon spectral blades that resemble the form of the Force Edge. Through this, Vergil has numerous ways to use his summoned swords, whether for attacking his enemies from a distance, surrounding them with it or from atop, or having the blades move around himself for defense and attack enemies get too close to him.

Judgement Cut: A signature move Vergil performs with his Yamato. By using the space-cutting properties of the sword, Vergil can attack his enemies from a distance by cutting through the air, where it sends a dark distortion that is then covered in slashes, cutting anyone caught in it to shreds. Vergil can also send multiple Judgement Cuts in rapid succession.

  • Judgement Cut End: A more powerful variation of Judgement Cut, where Vergil readies up his sword and then moves forward at such speeds to leave after-images behind. Such a move allows him to cover the area in his slashes, allowing him to take out large numbers of enemies in one full sweep.

Hell on Earth: By concentrating his demonic/magic powers on his hand and slamming than in the ground with a mighty punch, Vergil can create a powerful AOE attack that can cause devastating attacks on his enemies.

Deep Stinger: A forward lunge using both Yamato and Mirage Edge, with all the strength of his body and soul behind them.

Note: Vergil's optional equipment come from the canonical mobile game Peak of Combat, but the mechanics of the game fall into the Optional Equipment rules set by RPG characters with no distinct/set of weaponry they use above all other potential items they may have, being completely in the choosing of the player. As such, whilst they are listed as Optional, there is no reason to assume anything regarding their canonicity.
