I had udon for the first time today, man. A sausage, too. Got treated like a decent person for the first time, and even had someone pay for my meal. It's like a dream come true for me. I didn't really think it through when I started devil hunting, but if I get to keep up this kind of life? I don't care if it kills me.
~ Denji's resolve to Aki

Everybody wants to trash-talk my plans... It's revenge this, protect my family that, and save a cat, too! Blah, blah, blah! I guess your fancy dreams make you guys hot shit, huh?! How about we have us a dream battle, then?! How about that?! If I murderize you, that means your dream's weaker than fondling a tit!
~ Denji to the Leech Devil

All right already, I get it! I'll go get eaten! But I'm gonna fight back, you know. [...] Asshole, going and protecting me... Don't go doing shit you don't have to do. I'm not looking to have any more debts, so if we get out of this, we're calling it even!
~ Denji

Everybody dreams. You can't help it. Then dreaming's not a bad thing. It's not a bad thing, but... If you're gonna get in our way... THEN DIE!
~ Denji transforming into Chainsaw Man for the first time

Yeah, maybe I can't eat steak every day... But I do eat potstickers and ice cream and other tasty foods. I'm happy with my normal life. Plus, a normal life was my dream.
~ Denji's refusal to join the Chainsaw Man Church

I'm the worst, aren't I, Pochita? They burned down my home... With my pets inside it and I...

I feel like a million bucks. Thanks to you guys, I get to be Chainsaw Man.

Summary

Denji (デンジ?) is the main protagonist of the first part of the manga and anime series Chainsaw Man. He is a teenage devil hunter with the exceptional ability to transform into a devil himself.

After the death of his parents, Denji found himself the sole inheritor of the debts they owed to the Yakuza. Left on his own after being given the choice of either paying off the debt or being killed by the Yakuza, Denji would soon run into an injured devil. This was the Chainsaw Devil, Pochita. Realizing each other's predicament, Denji formed a contract with Pochita: in exchange for some of his blood, the devil would aid in his quest to slay devils to make money. Denji and Pochita eventually formed a close friendship while Denji used Pochita to work as a devil hunter for the local Yakuza.

However, this would only last for so long, as the Yakuza eventually betrayed Denji, dismembering him and Pochita and throwing their remains in a dumpster as a sacrifice to the Zombie Devil. Pochita then formed a new contract with Denji: in exchange for Pochita becoming his heart, Denji was to continue chasing the dreams he told to Pochita during their time together. Fusing with Pochita and gaining his devil powers, Denji is reborn as the titular Chainsaw Man, a Devil-human hybrid, and easily slays his betrayers. In order to honor Pochita's last wish, Denji becomes a Public Safety Devil Hunter after meeting Makima, a high-ranking Public Safety member who offers Denji the position due to her interest in his abilities.

Powers and Abilities:

All previous abilities and resistances, plus:

Attack Potency: Small Building level[Note 1] (Even before merging with Pochita, has shown to be capable of taking down low tier devils while using Pochita as a weapon and seemingly without any injury in spite of surviving on essentially almost no food every single day.[12] After his merge with Pochita, his impressive strength remained, being able to knock down Aki Hayakawa with a kick to his balls before briefly trading blows with him, albeit Aki had been caught off guard by the initial attack,[11] and with the use of an axe; chopped off a fiend's head with ease[13]), Varies (With the devil embodying the fear of chainsaws within him, the more feared he is, the more powerful he becomes,[33] even a relatively minor boost in fear can immensely boost a devil's overall strength and effects of their abilities[34]); Building level when transformed[Note 2] (Portrayed to be stronger when transformed; being able to bust through a metal door that Power couldn't break through with ease.[19] Even when greatly weakened from blood loss to where he couldn't fully transform,[8] could still physically block attacks from and harm devils like the Leech Devil with his punches[15]), higher with chainsaws (Denji's chainsaw's are able to easily pierce through his own body, able to easily tear through devils such as the Zombie,[12] Bat,[35] and Eternity Devil[36] as well as be able contend with Katana Man with his chainsaws,[37] the latter two shown capable of directly harming Denji's durability.[38][37] )

Speed: Supersonic+[Note 3] (Should be comparable to other human devil hunters such as Aki Hayakawa, Denji himself could casually behead a fiend before it could strike him in spite of the fiend attacking before him[13]), Varies; At least Supersonic+ when transformed[Note 4] (Generally portrayed to be faster when transformed; being able to dodge attacks from and land attacks before devils such as the Bat Devil could properly react.[35] Able to trade blows with Katana Man and easily blitzed a couple of goons.[37])

Lifting Strength: Class 5[Note 5] (Should scale to other human devil hunters such as Aki Hayakawa), Varies; At least Class 5,[Note 6] likely Class 100 when transformed[Note 7] (Shouldn't be too far away in terms of strength from his Post-Training key. Was able to catch a car thrown at him and throw it back[35])

Striking Strength: Small Building level, Varies; At most Building level when transformed

Durability: Small Building level[Note 1] (Can endure beatings from people comparable to him such as Aki Hayakawa[11]), Varies; At most Building level when transformed[Note 2] (Generally portrayed to be more durable when transformed; being shown capable of shrugging off a fall from the sky that destroyed a concrete roof upon his impact and surviving the Bat Devil's sonic attack that destroyed an entire building albeit it left him in a heavily injured state which he needed to regenerate from.[8]), higher with chainsaws (Bullets outright deflects off his non-human areas[39])

Attack Potency: Small Building level[Note 8] (After gruelling daily training with Kishibe, says that he's stronger than before and can take down much more devils easier.[23] Capable of blooding Beam with a punch[40], Varies; Large Building level+ when transformed[Note 9] (Should similarly be stronger than before due to his training; being able to surprise Katana Man by with his improvement[41] which he later confirms by telling Denji that he's "sharper than before"[42]), higher with chainsaws (Able to easily cut through the Typhoon Devil[43] who could walk through entire buildings unharmed, as well as other Hybrids such as Katana Man[25] and Bomb Girl[43])

Speed: Supersonic+[Note 3] (Should be faster than before after his gruelling daily training with Kishibe where he went from getting completely blitzed by Kishibe[4] to managing to land a single hit on him[23]), Varies; At least Supersonic+ when transformed[Note 4] (Gotten faster to where he managed to surprised Katana Man by blocking his Sword-Draw Dash,[41] an attack that previously completely blitzed him,[37] later both reacts to and cuts Katana Man in half during his Sword-Draw Dash.[25] Able to move Beam through Bomb Girl's explosions.[43])

Lifting Strength: Class 5[Note 5] (Stronger than before due to his training with Kishibe[23]), Varies; At least Class 100 when transformed[Note 10] (Should scale to Reze, who easily withstood the the Violence Fiend's stomp[44])

Striking Strength: Small Building level, Varies; Large Building level+ when transformed

Durability: Small Building level[Note 8] (Should be more durable than before due to his training. Was able to withstand being in close proximity to a small explosion created by Reze with little injury[45] and later his body was shown to be undamaged from being near a direct hit from rocket launcher[46]), Varies; Large Building level+ when transformed[Note 9] (Similarly, should be more durable than before. Survived being launched through concrete walls by Katana Man and is able to endure through several explosive punches from Bomb Girl.[41]), higher with chainsaws (Take's notably less damage from Bomb Girl's attacks, when defending with his chainsaws, which also remain in good condition in contrast to his main body,[6] when hit with Reze's torpedo explosions.)

Attack Potency: Small Building level[Note 8] (Still recieved weekly training with Kishibe, can easily take out Santa Claus' Dolls with a kick[47]), Varies; City Block level+ when transformed[Note 11] (Should be much stronger than before thanks to news of his existence being leaked, warranting other nations to send assassins after him,[48] fought Daytime Santa,[49] and the Gun Fiend, albiet was weaker than the latter[50]), Multi-City Block level with chainsaws[Note 12] (Easily cut off Daytime Santa's limbs,[49] could stab through the Gun Fiend and his Public Safety Uniform[50])

Speed: Supersonic+[Note 3] (Should be superior to his Post-Training Key, due to still till recieving weekly training from Kishibe ), Varies; At least Supersonic+ when transformed[Note 4] (Dodged the Gun Fiend's shots and even managed to quickly move in front of one to block it[51])

Striking Strength: Small Building level, Varies; City Block level+ when transformed

Lifting Strength: Class 5[Note 5] (Should be a bit stronger due to weekly training with Kishibe[23]), Varies; At least Class 100 when transformed[Note 10] (Should be much stronger than before, pulled a weakened Nighttime Santa towards him[52])

Durability: Small Building level[Note 8], Varies; City Block level+ when transformed[Note 11] (Took being plummeted through multiple floors of a building by Day-time Santa Claus[49], survived being swatted by Nighttime Santa[53]), Multi-City Block level with chainsaws[Note 12] (Blocked a shot from the Gun Fiend with his chainsaws, which could easily tear through multiple houses[51])

Attack Potency: Small Building level[Note 8] (Should scale to before as his human form should be unaffected by the fear empowerment devils receive. Took out an entire horde of armed assailants with just his fists and a baseball bat[24]), Varies; At least Building level when transformed[Note 13], higher with chainsaws (Weaker than before due to the success of Makima's plan of depowering him of power that devils receive by being feared.[54] In spite of this, still able to easily tear up devils like the Cockroach Devil[55] and Post-Revival Yuko,[31] both of which are capable of doing massive amounts of damage to buildings.[55][31] His daytime encounters and nighty vigilante work as Chainsaw Man[56] has left buildings destroyed as a side effect of his battles[57]), At least Multi-City Block level+ with Power's Blood Chainsaw[Note 14] (Able to slice into Makima[30])

Speed: Supersonic+[Note 3] (Should scale to before but likely faster than before; shown by him taking out an entire horde of armed assailants without getting hit[24] and moving in front of Miri so quick that it seemed like teleportation from his point of view[58]), Varies; At least Supersonic+ when transformed[Note 4] (Slower than before due to the success of his depowerment.[54] However, still fast enough to dodge all of Post-Revival Yuko's tendrils with ease[31] who, before her revival by Fami, could block crossbow shots.[59] Later saved Asa before the Justice Devil's tendrils could hit them and shown to be fast enough to wall-run and keep up with speeding motorcycles[32])

Lifting Strength: Class 5[Note 5] (Should scale to before), Varies; At least Class 5 when transformed[Note 6] (Weaker than before due to his depowerment.[54] Was able to jump to a upper apartment level from the road in a single bound[32] in spite of being notably heavy[60])

Striking Strength: Small Building level, Varies; At least Building level when transformed

Durability: Small Building level[Note 8] (Should scale to before), Varies; At least Building level when transformed[Note 13] (Less durable than before due to his depowerment.[54] However, still capable of shrugging off a flurry of punches from the Cockroach Devil which caused massive amounts of damage to the building Denji was thrown into[55]), higher with chainsaws

Attack Potency: Small Building level[Note 8] (Same as before. Using an axe crafted by Asa, was able to chop into multiple humans who had turned into trees without the Aging Devil's power, by tapping into an innate mechanism triggered when they reached the culmination of thought.[61] After boring a large hole into them, he proceeded to eat their internals until nothing was left.[62]), Varies; At least Multi-City Block level when transformed[Note 15] (Much stronger than his prior key's due to the success of Fami's plan of re-empowering Chainsaw Man with fear[63] which caused Chainsaw Man to become an everyday object of fear on par with sickness and aging,[64] aging being later revealed as a devil with the name of a Primal Fear.[65][66]), higher with chainsaws (Faced off against the Chainsaw Man Church Hybrid's which included a battle against the Sword, Whip and Spear Hybrids, in which he was able to hortizontally bisect through himself and Spear Man in one clean saw, in which despite only being a torso, crawled over to Spear Man and procceed to slice off his head and consume it. Followed by Whip Woman who after slicing her leg off to make her loose footing to repeatedly sawing through her body. Was able to uppercut Sword Man in the jaw, momentarily halting him, then punches through Miri, procceeding to slowly saw vertically through his torso.[67])

Speed: Supersonic+[Note 3] (Should scale to before), Varies; At least Supersonic+ when transformed[Note 4] (Much faster than his last key due to the success of his re-empowerment.[63] Easily dodged the Whip Hybrids's attack while knocking back Sword Man before he could hit him,[67] both of which are able to fight alongside other hybrids such as Katana Man and Bomb Girl[68])

Lifting Strength: Class 5[Note 5] (Was able to choke Barem Bridge, causing him to struggle to break free, and then proceeded to squeeze his neck to the point of ripping Barem's head off his shoulders), Varies; At least Class M when transformed[Note 16] (Massively superior to his prior key due to his re-empowerment, which allowed the Chainsaw Devil to become feared on a level comparable to the Aging Devil,[64] whom is a devil with the name of a Primal Fear.[65] This in turn, empowers Denji when he is transformed.)

Striking Strength: Small Building level, Varies; At least Multi-City Block level when transformed

Durability: Small Building level[Note 8] (Same as before.), Varies; At least Multi-City Block level when transformed[Note 15] (Much more durable than his prior keys due to his re-empowerment.[63]), higher with chainsaws (Able to block an attack from Sword Man)

Stamina: Superhuman (Even before becoming a Devil-Human Hybrid, Denji has been continuously hunting devils and doing other odd jobs while malnourished to the point of having trouble sleeping from the hunger every single day. Even after being stabbed through the heart, could still run away for a brief while.[12] This phenomenal ability to endure has only been further shown after his revival. Extreme injuries such as disembowelment,[50] broken bones,[69] amputation,[27] being set ablaze,[18] being dissolved by acid,[19] bisection[67] and even decapitation[5] have shown to not be enough to stop his determination to keep on fighting; likely thanks to his resolute will and masochist tendencies revealed later on.[67] Also, thanks to his physiology, Denji can theoretically fight indefinitely as long as there's blood around. This can be seen with his battle with the Eternity Devil, where he battled the devil non-stop for three days straight[14])

Range: Standard Melee Range physically, Extended Melee Range with Equipment and Chainsaws, Up to Tens of Meters with Chains (Can use the chains from his chainsaws to wrap around his opponents from afar[18])

Standard Equipment:

Part 2:

Intelligence:

At least Average. Due to his impoverished upbringing and incessant life as a devil hunter, Denji has been severely debilitated with his formal education - having never gone to a school before; showing trouble understanding basic kanji[70][71] and the meanings of principal terms during the beginning of Part 1,[13] although this inadvertently has lead to him being able to stay calm in most high-pressure situations.[72] However, it's best to describe Denji as simply untaught rather than actually dumb. He has been shown to already be able to quickly perform long addition in his head at the very start of the series[12] and since then has cognitively progressed by a good amount thanks to being placed under Aki's care,[73] training with Kishibe,[23] watching educational television every single day[18][74] and going to a proper high-school by the end of Part 1.[75] Notably, Denji has shown to possess an incredible attention to detail, e.g. being able to quickly catch onto Power's contradiction of speech when she attempted to lure him into a trap,[33] and recall information even in situations where it seems that he isn't paying any attention at all.[76] Through his perceptiveness, he's able to turn the information he's noticed into strategic or tactical plans when needed. Moreover, Denji has also shown to be able to master various activities in a relatively short amount of time, this can be seen with him learning how to swim after just one short lesson with Reze[27] and being able to produce a wide-range of appetizing culinary dishes after just a few months.[75] His experience living out in the streets has also greatly helped him practically in situations such as making money, e.g. recycling cigarette butts in order to make money from the homeless[77] and exploiting the Eternity Devil's loop to collect duplicating student hats in order to sell them later.[78]

Gifted. Even before his proper training, Denji has shown to be an extremely practical fighter thanks to being in the devil-hunting business ever since he was still a child.[12] He's perfectly willing to aim for the weak points of an opponent's body right at the start of a fight and exploit those injured areas.[11] Denji's ability in combat has since greatly improved thanks to his special training with the likes of Kishibe,[22] a veteran devil hunter who's skilled enough to briefly keep up with Quanxi,[79] another hunter that's skilled enough to be regarded to be able to win against anyone else in the world in a pure bare-knuckle fighting.[80] Through his training, Denji has learnt and later practically applied lessons such as: to always keep a cool head while in battle, be perspective if the environment around him can be exploited against an opponent[23] and to never trust what a "hunter" says.[81] Through Denji may appear naive and dense sometimes, his quick-thinking and outright luscious ingenuity in battle has let him overcome insurmountable situations (examples shown below in 'Feats - Intelligence'). Moreover, he's also able to formulate complex plans that utilises the knowledge he's gained about his opponent with resources he has access to when push comes to shove, as seen in the final battle of the Public Safety Arc, where he managed to take Makima by surprise and successfully outsmart her.[30][75]

Standard Tactics:

While Denji typically doesn't prefer to transform into his Hybrid form due to having to deal with the blood loss after he transforms back,[33] he has no qualms transforming when the situation really calls for it. Due to his early experience devil-hunting, Denji has shown to be perfectly willing to end fights as quickly as possible such as targeting areas such the neck for a swift kill.[13] While early on into the series, when faced against male opponents, he would typically try to aim for their nuts first,[11] he has since refined much of his close-quarters combat skills[24] through his training with Kishibe.

When transformed, Denji way of combat changes more towards rushing down his opponents, viscously slashing away at them while relying on his own ability to dodge, endure or his opponent's own blood to regenerate from any attack that's thrown his way.[14][18][82] While Denji does get "battle high" from combat,[83] he still has shown to be perfectly able to adapt to his opponent and strategise against them mid-fight.

Weaknesses: Possesses all general weaknesses possessed by Hybrids. As abilities such as his innate regeneration and transformation are linked to the amount of blood he has in his body,[4][84] if he's running low on blood, he will be unable to regenerate[8] or maintain his transformation.[14] This isn't helped by the fact that just his transformation will cause him lose a lot of blood due to cutting himself with his chainsaws[2] to the point where he'll get incredibly faint[33] and can even pass out after a long battle when reverted back to human form.[71] Likewise, his trigger-based regeneration requires him to pull on the cord on his chest in order for it to work. Can be manipulated to do favours by money or sexual favours from women he finds pretty[85][86] even if they're actively trying to kill him[44] or he himself knows that it's a honey trap.[24] Furthermore, will actively attempt to save pretty women or animals when they're in danger.[85][55] He's also prone to swallow anything with nutritional value that enters his mouth.[87]

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

Note: While Denji's "Red Chainsaw Man" and Pochita's "Black Chainsaw Man" are technically the same being, it has been decided to separate them into separate profiles. This is because Denji has no control over his "Black Chainsaw Man" form as it's Pochita that takes over.[30] He himself doesn't consider this form to be him[58] and likewise, characters like Makima and Fami also consider Denji's "Red Chainsaw Man" and Pochita's "Black Chainsaw Man" to be completely different beings.[89][90] As a result, this profile only focuses on the titular "Red Chainsaw Man" we see throughout most of the series while Pochita's "Black Chainsaw Man" can be found on Pochita's own profile.
