Summary
Scott Summers was just a boy when his parents died in a plane crash, orphaning he and his older brother Alex. After being bullied at school, Scott's mutant power to release deadly optic blasts manifested and he unintentionally killed his foster parents. For the next 6 months, Scott refused to open his eyes, but he was allowed to see again when a kind stranger provided him with ruby-quartz lenses that controlled his optic blasts. That kind stranger was Professor Charles Xavier, and Scott joined him right away to become Cyclops, the first X-Man.
Cyclops was a capable leader and strategic thinker, although his relationship with teammate Jean Grey would often cloud his judgement. After the apparent demise of his mentor, Cyclops took over the Xavier Institute with Jean and disbanded the X-Men to focus on the institution's academic mission. However, the conflicts of mutant violence frequently pulled Cyclops into the fray, and just as he made a move to involve himself politically in mutant affairs he was publicly assassinated by Quicksilver.
