Maybe they knew something about their power that we don't? The Chaos Emeralds are still pretty mysterious, even after all we've done with them.

Summary

The Chaos Emeralds are one of the main items of Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, and one of the original concepts of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. They are a set of seven mysterious artifacts containing unlimited power, and is the cause of several conflicts over obtaining them.

Their creation and purpose are unknown. Aside from appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), they make their earliest appearance in lore as utilized power sources by an advanced race of extraterrestrials, the Ancients, ancestors of Chaos and the Chao.

Tens of thousands of years ago, the technologically prolific race fled their doomed home world in the wake of its destruction caused by a godlike entity known only as The End. They brought with them seven powerful gems as a power source for their spacecrafts in their attempt to seek refuge elsewhere. As their spacecraft passed by the Earth, the Chaos Emeralds in their possession resonated with the power of the Master Emerald on the surface of the planet and overrode their navigation systems. This caused the Ancients to land on Earth, where they created a settlement on the Starfall Islands. Due to the Ancients being responsible for the Chaos Emeralds’ arrival on Earth, they are inadvertently the catalyst of the numerous major events throughout the series.

Attack Potency: Varies (The extent of the Chaos Emeralds' power is largely dependent on the user's aptitude. Emotions can intensify the strength of the Chaos Emeralds, as they convert their bearers' thoughts and will into power), Large Star level (The energy of a single Chaos Emerald is capable of shattering the Earth into seven regions or moving large fragments of the planet at high speeds. The power of the seven Chaos Emeralds is capable of piercing stars when not used at their full capacity, such as by the Gizoid Emerl[Statistics Values 1]), Up to Low Multiverse level (12 universes. The seven Chaos Emeralds are sought by Dr. Eggman for their "unimaginable power", making them far superior to all of his machines. Empowered Classic Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Mighty, and Ray to destroy the Phantom King. Superior to the power of the World Rings and the Paradox Prism. The seven Chaos Emeralds are comparable to the Sol Emeralds, which were causing the Sol Dimension to merge with the Prime World, which would've led to the collapse of both universes), Complex Multiverse level at their peak (Granted Solaris its power, and empowered Super Sonic, Super Shadow and Super Silver to match and defeat the Sun God. Enhanced Sonic to fight and defeat the Egg Wizard alongside Burning Blaze and her Sol Emeralds. Allowed Modern and Classic Sonic to easily defeat the Time Eater. Empowered the four Titans created by the Ancients, and were used by Super Sonic to heavily damage and nearly defeat The End before its full power awakened[Statistics Values 2])

Speed: Immobile, at least Subsonic travel speed (After depowering from a Super form, they scatter at least this speed after being used). The boost given to users Varies from Infinite (Far superior to artifacts such as the World Rings and at least relative to characters like Generations base Sonic), Up to Immeasurable (Empowered the Super Hedgehog Trio to beat Solaris and the Time Eater)

Durability: Unknown

Stamina: Infinite (Has been referred to several times to contain infinite energy[21] throughout the series)

Range: Varies from Planetary to beyond Complex Multiversal (The Chaos Emeralds alongside the Sol Emeralds were affecting both Sonic and Blaze's universes, and empowered Solaris to nearly destroy the entire multiverse, as well as allowing super forms to hit Solaris' consciousness despite the latter being a super-dimensional being, even in comparison to the 5-D Maginaryworld[Statistics Values 2]. Also allowed Solaris to turn everything into nothing[22], including Null Space, a realm outside of all dimensions)

Weaknesses: The Master Emerald is capable of nullifying the powers of the Chaos Emeralds. They lose their power if drained of negative energy.
