Summary

Denji is an impoverished young man who is paying off his deceased father's debt to the yakuza by working as a Devil Hunter with his devil dog companion, Pochita. One night, the yakuza, under the control of the Zombie Devil, killed Denji. Pochita then performed a contract with Denji, merging with him and turning the young man into the Chainsaw Devil. With his newfound power, Denji slays the Zombie Devil and its minions. He is then approached by a group of government Devil Hunters, the Public Safety Division, directed by the enigmatic Makima, who convinces him to join their ranks. Denji agrees and is teamed with a human Devil Hunter and a Blood Fiend. The story then centers on the lead characters and their mission to eliminate the lesser devils in order to reach and kill the Gun Devil, humanity's deadliest mass murderer.

Power of the Verse

Chainsaw Man's power levels vary due to the physiology of devils, which depends on the fear of their specific concept. Low-tier beings, including fiends, are at Small Building level in physical prowess, while devil hunters are slightly weaker. Most devils range from low to mid-tier, with lower-tier devils like the fox devil able to bite through buildings, and mid-tiers, including most hybrids, reaching Large Building level+.

Stronger devils and hybrids are at City Block level+, significantly stronger than those below them. High tiers, like the Gun Devil, range into Town level due to their destructive capabilities in different forms. God tiers, such as primordial devils, are transcendent to regular devils, existing on a completely different plane and capable of destruction and power far higher than the beings below them can ever hope to achieve. Other devils, such as the Chainsaw Devil, reach near this level due to being the devil that all devils fear the most.

Speed-wise, low-tiers like the Angel Devil can block bullets at Supersonic+ speeds. Fiends and some devil hunters are slightly slower but can keep up. Mid-tiers, including hybrids, are generally faster, some reaching High Hypersonic+ speeds, comparable to Quanxi. High-tiers, range from Hypersonic+ to Massively Hypersonic+, with feats like Makima shooting Pochita into space. God tiers, such as the Chainsaw Devil, are far faster, able to statue opponents below them in battle.

Devils in the verse can have a number of supernatural abilities depending on the concept they embody, such as Blood Manipulation, Spatial Manipulation, Mind Manipulation, etc. Devils also have a host of abilities they possess by their very nature, such as blood ingestion-based Regeneration, Abstract Existence, Immortality, and others.

After the conclusion of the first arc in 2021, a second installment has since taken place, and the power of the series may thus increase as new showings occur.

Even a relatively minor boost in fear can immensely boost a devil's overall strength and the effects of their abilities.
