Summary

Chainsaw Man (チェンソーマン Chensōman?) is a multi-part manga series written and illustrated by Fujimoto Tatsuki. Currently the series is ongoing with two parts along with a light novel that focuses on short stories with some of the devil-hunting partners we see in the series.

In Part One, the Public Safety Saga (公こう安あん編へん Kōan Hen?), we follow Denji - an impoverished teen paying off his deceased father's debt to the yakuza by working as a Devil Hunter with his devil dog companion, Pochita. After his betrayal and death at the hands of the yakuza, under the control of the Zombie Devil, Pochita sacrifices himself under the promise that Denji show Pochita his dreams in order to merge and reborn the two of them as a Devil-Human hybrid. After massacring his betrayers with his newfound power, he is quickly approached by the Public Safety Division, a group of government-oriented Devil Hunters, directed by the enigmatic Makima who upon meeting him, gives him a choice: live under her as a human dog, or die by her hand as a Devil. With Denji's recruitment, his new life begins; working alongside other eccentric Devil Hunters while exploring into the bizarre world that is Chainsaw Man.

In Part Two, the Academy Saga (学がっ校こう編へん Gakkō Hen?), our perspective shifts to Asa Mitaka - an distant and introverted high-schooler who has isolated herself from society after the death of her mother by the Typhoon Devil. After isolating herself further after accidentally killing her class' pet Chicken Devil, Bucky, a chance for her life to better itself appears after a surprise invitation to make amends at Bucky's grave given from her teacher and class president. However, this ends up turning out to be a ruse for the class president to kill her out of jealousy. In her dying moments, Asa is greeted by Yoru the War Devil; placing her in the same situation to Denji all those months back ago. Accepting a contract to be reborn as the War Devil's vessel, Asa is promptly pulled into Yoru's quest of vengeance against Chainsaw Man. Unlike the previous part, Part Two jumps between the point of view of both: Asa and her quest to locate Chainsaw Man while navigating her new life with Yoru, and Denji; now trying to find a balance between maintaining his new normal life alongside his identity as Chainsaw Man.

Power of the Verse

Thanks to the physiology of Devils, the strength of characters in the Verse Varies. At the absolute bottom are Devils born from obscure or insignificant fears, these entities are Below Average Human level, to the point where even small animals can be lethal threats. The weakest relevant combatants are Fiends, who generally scale to Small Building level, along with stronger Devil Hunters, who are weaker but still comparable. More powerful Fiends and Devils, such as the Fox Devil, push toward the higher end of the pervious tier and even reach Building level outright.

As the hierarchy rises, stronger Devils, typical Hybrids, and the most capable humans scale to Large Building level+, surpassing Devils like Bat. Above them are stronger Devils and Hybrids capable of reaching City Block level+. At the high end of this tier are the most formidable Fiends and Hybrids, hitting Multi-City Block level, while Devils associated with widespread, deeply rooted fears can push even further, upscaling to Multi-City Block level+. Near the top stands the Gun Devil: its scattered fragments, potent enough to replace the global nuclear arms race, demonstrate Town level destructive force, while the full, original Gun Devil unleashed City level devastation, albeit at the cost of its own body. Towering above the entire verse are the Primal Fears, entities that reside in Hell and utterly dwarf even the Gun Devil in power, potentially reaching or exceeding Mountain level potency with their special attacks.

In terms of speed, lower-tier characters like the Angel Devil are capable of reacting to and blocking bullets at Supersonic+ speeds. Fiends and some Devil Hunters are slightly slower but can still keep pace. Mid-tiers, particularly Hybrids, tend to be significantly faster many reaching High Hypersonic+ speeds, as seen with characters like Quanxi. Higher-tier characters range from Hypersonic+ to Massively Hypersonic+, with feats such as Makima launching Pochita into space. At the very peak, some attacks move at Sub-Relativistic speeds, capable of circling the globe in seconds, while the absolute fastest abilities are considered FTL+, traversing similar distances in mere fractions of a second.

Devils in the verse can have a number of supernatural abilities depending on the concept they embody, such as Blood Manipulation, Spatial Manipulation, Mind Manipulation, etc. Devils also have a host of abilities they possess by their very nature, such as blood ingestion-based Regeneration, Abstract Existence, Immortality, and others. After the conclusion of the first arc in 2021, a second installment has since taken place, and the power of the series may thus increase as new showings occur.
