Summary
"Captain Jack Harkness" was the alias adopted by Time Agent and con artist Javic Piotr Thane from the 51st century who later became an associate and occasional companion of the Doctor.
After he was killed by a Dalek in battle, he was revived by Rose Tyler, who at the time was transformed into the temporal-entity known as the Bad Wolf. Unable to control her powers, she accidentally turned him into an immortal. Because of this mistake, the Ninth Doctor saw his companion as a fixed point — a living temporal paradox that threatened the TARDIS' proper operation. Consequently, the Doctor abandoned him in the year 200,100 aboard a space station orbiting a Dalek-devastated Earth.
Afterward, Jack was able to time-travel back to Earth in the past, only to discover his immortality caused him to become an "impossible thing", having almost stopped aging and being resurrected back to life no matter how many times he was killed.
During his long wait for the incarnation of the Doctor he was familiar with, he experienced Earth's history firsthand while having many different relationships, some of which produced offspring. He later worked at Torchwood Three for several decades as an informal freelancer, eventually becoming its leader in the year 2000.
Later that decade, he finally met up with the Doctor, although the Time Lord revealed he was unable to remove Jack`s immortality, Jack then helped the Doctor in saving Earth from the Master before returning back to Torchwood Three.
There, Jack continued to protect human history while occasionally time-traveling around the universe by himself.
