I am Bane - and I could kill you… but death would only end your agony and silence your shame. Instead, I will simply… BREAK YOU![1]
~ Bane immediately before he breaks Batman’s back
An artist shouldn’t repeat herself. You risk alienating your audience. Who wants to see the same thing every time? You must grow. Change. Be unpredictable. Unexpected. Unknowable. The serpent sheds its skin and it is reborn. And that is a good thing, no?[2]
~ Bane on his path to redemption

Summary

This man was born in the prison of Peña Duro, where he would have to serve a life sentence in the place of his father. He grew up in the prison, and killing one of his fellow prisoners, the guards bestowed a name upon him: Bane. The prison guards locked Bane in a pit for ten years as penance, expecting him to die, but he survived and became a legend to the other inmates. Bane trained his mind and his body and was eventually chosen as a test subject for a drug called Venom. Bane was the only subject who survived the test, and he was subsequently given surgery so the drug could be injected directly into his brain. After faking his own death to escape Peña Duro, Bane returned to free the inmates, kill the warden and steal a helicopter so he could travel to Gotham City, home of the man that Bane wanted to destroy: the Batman.

Bane would go on to free the inmates from Arkham, allowing them to wear down Batman and weaken him, then he would break into Wayne Manor and incapacitate Alfred just in time for Batman to return. Bane proceeded to beat Batman down and ultimately break his back, making him the only man to have “broken the Bat”. Bane practically ruled Gotham City until he was defeated by Azrael, although he would eventually escape prison and become a recurring foe of Batman.

At some point, Bane would come to believe that his father was Thomas Wayne, which would make him the half-brother of Batman. While this was eventually proven false, it allowed Bane to spend time with Batman, which led to him beginning a journey to find his real father. During his journey, Bane would find redemption, stopping several criminals and nearly sacrificing his life to save Batman. After being rejuvenated by a Lazarus Pit, Bane left to begin a new chapter of his life, now a changed man.

Stated to hit as hard as a Venom-amped Bird, who cracked Azrael’s ribs[22])

Speed: Superhuman movement speed (Hourman stated that normal humans can’t move at speeds like Bane[3]). At least Supersonic+, possibly Hypersonic+ combat speed (Comparable to Batman and has fought him multiple times. Dodged a kick from Azrael while injured.[12] Easily caught a kick from Nightwing[16])

Lifting Strength: At least Class 1, possibly Class 5 (Had an evenly matched grapple with Batman[23]), higher with Venom (Much stronger than his base self)

Striking Strength: Small Building level+ (Comparable to Batman and stronger than Nightwing), Building level with Venom (Much stronger than his base self. Superior to Azrael)

Durability: Small Building level+ (Can take hits from Batman. Tanked a kick from Nightwing[16]), Building level with Venom (More durable than before. Took attacks from Azrael)

Stamina: Superhuman (During his time in Peña Duro, he did intense exercises every day: a thousand push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups and meditation for four hours instead of sleeping.[7] He could continue fighting despite taking several hits, stabs and slashes, he literally ignored having Batarangs shot into his back and still survived being beaten down by Azrael.[12] While in Blackgate Penitentiary, he ran twenty miles every day for six months and swam through a thirty-knot current with no problem.[18] Escaped a prison hundreds of feet below the surface without showing signs of fatigue.[5] Easily climbed up a cliff in the middle of a hurricane with 120 mph winds[24])

Range: Standard Melee Range, Hundreds of Meters with firearms

Standard Equipment: A harness that supplies him with Venom[7], although he stopped using it after Knightfall.

  • Optional Equipment: A sniper rifle, a rocket launcher, a flashlight, a gun that fired darts of Venom, a net gun, a stuffed bear with a knife hidden inside of it

Intelligence: Genius. Bane was able to go from being illiterate to reading three books a day and learning how to read in six languages. He read all of the books in the Peña Duro library, of which there were thousands, and read many more books that were smuggled in to him.[7] He was able to single-handedly deduce that Bruce Wayne was Batman.[9] He is a master strategist and a student of every military leader and conqueror in history.[10] He was able to recognize a chess play even though he’d never seen a chessboard before,[25] and merely a day later, he was challenging Ra’s Al Ghul in a game of chess.[26] Ra's Al Ghul regarded Bane as an equal to the greatest minds that he’d ever known.[5] He is also a skilled chemist that could recreate Venom with only a little bit of help.[22]

Standard Tactics: Prior to and during Knightfall, Bane rarely ever fought without Venom, but after Knightfall, he would never use it. He is almost exclusively a hand-to-hand fighter that occasionally makes use of guns.

Weaknesses: Removing the tubes feeding him Venom will cause him to lose his enhanced strength, and using more Venom causes him to gain a dependency. However, after his defeat at the hands of Azrael, Bane swore off using Venom and overcame his dependency, so it is no longer an issue.
