Summary
Azazel claimed he was one of the oldest mutants, part of a group of demonic-looking mutants called the Neyaphem. He even claimed that he once battled Mephisto and others for the title of "Satan". The Neyaphem were eventually banished to the Brimstone Dimension by another group of mutants with angelic appearances, the Cheyarafim.
Seeking a way for his kind to rule the world yet again, Azazel sired several dozen children, one of them with Mystique who would grow to become Nightcrawler, his goal of destroying both the Cheyarafim and "normal mutants", those not carrying monstrous or demonic appearances, Azazel has been a recurring foe of the X-Men ever since.
