Ayumi Amatsu

Summary

Ayumi Amatsu is Satori Amatsu's adopted sister and a zombie. Because of Amatsu's careless words, Ayumi and his other sister Erika start a competition between zombies and vampires using Satori's virtual reality disaster environment simulator.

Weaknesses: Will die if her brain is destroyed, cannot maintain her superhuman speeds over long distances or her stitches will break

Feats/Statements:

  • Generally immortal. However, they can be damaged like normal by blades and bullets. It would be most accurate to say they continue moving even after being destroyed. Their strength ranges from 1-10 times what it was in their human form, but that drops as the rotting progresses.
  • Ayumi is covered in stitches because of her special preservation treatment, but normal zombies don’t need that.
  • They ignore any damage they take. The damage can be healed by sewing it up.
  • Their potential is the same during the day and at night.
  • Crushing their heart won’t kill them, but destroying the brain kills them instantly.
  • A small bite is all they need to infect a healthy human and create another zombie.
  • They attack people for food.
  • An individual’s strength is reliant on the original human’s build and muscles.
  • They have been confirmed to infect non-human animals like dogs or cats. (What about bugs, lizards, and fish? How far does it go? I should ask my sister.)
  • They have no hierarchy, so they won’t listen to anyone’s orders. ← As I said, they’re idiots.
  • Their intelligence deteriorates as the rotting progresses. ← They can preserve their intelligence by continually injecting themselves with preservatives like my sister does.
  • They come from the Acute Zombie Powder created by altering a virus found in the Caribbean using the drugs spoken of in the Haitian legends. So genre-wise, are they biological?

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 01 - Zombie traits noted by Satori

Originally, Zombie Powder refers to a new virus discovered in the Caribbean. It mostly infects livestock.

It spreads orally.

However, it resides in gelatin matter, especially tendons, rather than flesh and blood and the infection mainly spreads when the carrier consumes the living tissue of a healthy subject.

It is extremely weak to the open air, so the virus is quickly exterminated when directly floating in the atmosphere or even when the blood or saliva is exposed to the air as spray. As such, the risk of infection is nearly zero unless the carrier bites deep enough to reach the tendons.

At this point, the virulence to humans is weak and in many cases there are no symptoms at all. The virus cannot be entirely exterminated, but it will live in a state of coexistence for the rest of their life and causes no apparent problems in their day to day life.

The Acute strain was artificially created by transforming the Zombie Powder virus with a few different chemicals.

The fact that one of those chemicals has long been used in Haiti is of especial symbolic interest, but that is straying from the topic at hand and will be set aside for now.

As the Acute name suggests, it is extremely virulent and has a nearly 100% chance of causing symptoms in both infected livestock and infected humans. In fact, a cellular change has even been seen in some plants which should not even have animal gelatin matter. That should likely be classified as an infection as well.

The symptoms include an extreme sense of starvation, slowed blood flow, and the vitality to continue moving even after the heart has been crushed. Most likely, the oxygen and nutrients transported by the blood are being transported in some other way to preserve brain function even when the other organs have failed, but it is still unknown what medium is used.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 01 - Acute Zombie Powder

Serial 33: Kurosuna Jouji

Estimated Probability of Death: 94.5% (100% if Ayumi attacks)

Age 28, Male, Bright Cross Intelligence Team. Greatest Risk: Heart ruptured when Ayumi stabs her hand into his chest.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 01 - Ayumi can stab her arm into humans

“You two stay here. I’ll go silence them.”

“Ah. Wait, Ayumi!!”

I did not have time to stop her.

She was like a gust of wind. Ayumi charged down the passageway and vanished. I heard shouts of anger, surprise, and fear punctuated by gunfire.

“It’s the Acute version! She’s finally gotten in here. Shoot her, shoot her!!”

“What happened to the emergency evacuation plan!? What are the group leader’s instructions!?”

“There’s no time to wait for that! The hand of death is already right in front of us!!”

The series of explosive sounds were clearly different from the small handguns carried by police officers. Were they assault rifles? Submachineguns? Light machineguns? I didn’t know how the detailed classifications worked, but I was pretty sure these were military weapons.

Perhaps due to the enclosed space, a mixture of a fireworks-like smell and a rusty smell gradually grew stronger.

[...]

Someone practically rolled out from another tunnel. Their outfit seemed completely unrealistic. Soldiers in black protectors and carrying machineguns may have been a common sight in Los Angeles or Detroit, but this was Japan. What kind of rules had they brought into this country?

[...]

Gunfire continued down another tunnel. But it was weaker than before. Or rather, the number of guns firing was shrinking.

What are you doing, Ayumi?

Are you doing stunts with no CG or wires when zombies are supposed to be slow!?

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 01 - Ayumi fights and defeats a Bright Cross security team armed with machine guns without sustaining significant damage

As the military helicopters approached the high-tech office region with its tall shop buildings and broadcast towers, a change occurred.

As they flew between the fifty-story buildings and broadcast towers, they seemed to start malfunctioning and crashing, one after another. I couldn’t tell what was happening from this distance, but it was obviously more than just engine trouble. I could sense intentional malice.

“There’s a bunch of smoke rising from the ground,” said Ayumi as she stared into the distance.

My zombie little sister may have had better eyesight than me, but I swore in my heart I would start touching all over her stitches if she tried to show off any more.

“But that’s a decoy. While they focus downward, the vampires under Onee-chan’s control are jumping down. It can be from the high-rise building rooftops or the top of the broadcast towers. They fall down, hit the rotors, and blind the pilots by covering the glass with red tomato juice. Then the helicopters crash.”

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 01 - Ayumi's eyesight

Ayumi ran from classroom to classroom biting any handy boy or girl. After a few dozen seconds, the bitten kids turned pale and similarly attacked students and teachers. My vampire sister had to drink a liter or two of blood, but my zombie sister apparently only had to take one bite. From there, she became a glutton(?) only interested in flesh.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 01 - Infected humans turn into zombies in a few dozen seconds

“There are metal bars.”

“Yes, but they are broken.”

“The scary part is the teeth marks on them. Please tell me Ayumi isn’t that much of an idiot.”

“Vampires are also an Archenemy known for biting, but it is very interesting that Miss Ayumi is the first to come to mind.”

There had been a door made of metal bars just like the ones blocking a prison passageway, but a great strength had bent the bars, torn the door away, and thrown it aside.

[...]

All of the doors had fancy locks, but they had all been forced open by some great strength.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 01 - Ayumi and Erikka are capable of forcing their way through metal doors

That acted as a trigger.

Their first step sounded like an explosion and they charged straight toward each other. At this point, they did not bother attacking with a large group or cleverly manipulating the normal people.

It was one-on-one.

They grabbed each other’s thrusting hands, pulled at their hair, opened their mouths, and tried to bite the other. The zombie went for the vampire and vampire for the zombie. They knew they could not just conveniently turn the other to their side, but they did it anyway. They knew the risks and they showed no fear of their own destruction. They did not have the luxury of neatly and elegantly facing each other. One pushed the other down, the other spun around, and they rolled along the ground, trying to come out on top.

[...]

They sounded as carefree as girls hitting each other with stuffed animals and cushions, but their fangs and claws tore through their clothes and soft skin.

The sisters shouted at each other even as they were soaked in red.

[...]

They had gone beyond normal injuries. They had more than just torn skin and red blood oozing out.

I saw pink things, white things, soft things, and hard things. So much was visible in their wounds that I was amazed the human body contained all that.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 01 - Ayumi fights Erika

This was really bad. What was I going to do? My older sister Erika was a vampire and my little sister Ayumi was a zombie. They were known as the undead or Archenemies, which made them something like an RPG’s hidden boss. I was in real trouble if they were angry. They wouldn’t even need a fist to break through the plywood door; a karate chop would be enough to break right through! And then they’d drag me out!

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 02 - Can easily break through a wooden door

While wearing her midriff-exposing jogging wear and an unzipped track suit coat, Ayumi clenched her teeth in frustration, but then she crouched down and grabbed one of the shot-down bat corpses.

In other words, a part of our sister’s flesh.

“Warning,” said Maxwell.

“Ayumi, you inappropriate idiot of a girl!!”

She did not hesitate to throw it. Her strength was around 10 times that of a human. That meant she could throw a baseball at 2000kph. Even if the bat was soft, it could kill someone with its speed, just like an ultra-high pressure water cutter.

Itou Helen’s black dress and cape fluttered as she frantically jumped to the side. Cracks ran through the reinforced glass ceiling with tremendous speed. This went beyond the .45 bullet I had taken to the thigh. If that hit a flesh-and-blood human, they would be smashed to pieces.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 02 - Can throw a baseball at 2000km/h

A tingling tension continued for a while. This was the ideal turn of events given the circumstances. But it was hard to call this a safe path. After all, a zombie like Ayumi had an instant kill technique. Even if she only caused a single scratch, it was all over if she bit you. You were immediately zombified. And modern zombies were fast. With leg strength 10 times that of a human, she could easily catch up to a cheetah over short distances. Although she would apparently destroy her own stiches over longer distances.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 02 - Ayumi can easily surpass a cheetah's speed over short distances

Next, a deafening sound burst out as if to crush my heart.

Ayumi herself was swinging her brutal limbs around wildly.

“Wha-?”

“It doesn’t really matter, but just wait there a bit, okay?”

With that casual comment, my little sister bent and twisted her legs, hips, and back while sometimes supporting herself on a leg and sometimes flipping upside down on an arm. She spun around and around like she was breakdancing.

Her fists and feet used that centrifugal force to pierce through the masses of metal rapidly flying in from the hall.

“What are those?”

They were about the size of motocross bikes. The two-wheel vehicles used their large spike-like suspension to bounce off the floor and they had various weapons hanging from the arms that extended to either side like an attack helicopter. The support wings seemed to bend and fold up when making curves or passing through doors, but that wasn’t the problem. They had a chain gun that didn’t need a magazine, a narrow electric saw, and…was that a gas-operated pile driver aimed at Ayumi!?

Ayumi arched her back into a bridge and just barely dodged the thick spike. From there, her rising right leg continued on up and smashed the mass of steel.

The flow of time returned to normal.

Another three or four of them attacked, so the Ayumi Storm destroyed those Winged Motocross Dangerous Delinquent Babies.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 03 - Ayumi fights and destroys some Horse Knight drones

A storm of destruction swept across the roof.

On one hand, the Horse Knight unmanned motorcycle weapons used their machineguns and gas-operated pile drivers to push back the highly-infectious Archenemies.

On the other hand, the vampire and zombie stars could spread their infection across continents if they tried.

As the steel vanguards approached from every direction, the Archenemies stood back-to-back with me at the center and they danced. They danced with a crazed beauty. Each time their shoulders and hips turned or their arms or legs twisted, the precise industrial products built to military standards were split, crushed, or smashed.

…Had my sisters always been this strong?

Strong enough to overwhelm the enemy while also protecting a frail human like me from the many machineguns surrounding us?

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 03 - Ayumi and Erika destroy more Horse Knights

We all left the roof and descended a floor to the abandoned hospital’s top floor. My sisters could see in the dark, so only I was reliant on my smartphone’s backlight. They got to work on the fire door blocked by a pile of trash. There was apparently a trick to the spring holding the door in place, so Erika reached up and messed with the gearbox that had an arm attached to the top of the metal door. Then I heard the small metallic click of something unlocking. …The structure of the lock and the material of the door were different from a normal fire door, so this had apparently not been installed in case of a fire.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 03 - Zombies have night vision

'And as the forehead glasses Class Rep from next door charged at me with enough force to not just bite me with her fangs but tear the flesh and bone from my throat, my sisters took an extremely simple action.

They kicked her.

They moved simultaneously as if kicking down a door.

The tremendously deep noise was a lot like the beat of a drum larger than I was tall. The Class Rep’s small body doubled over as she flew backwards. She rolled backwards and even destroyed a counter sectioned off by a transparent acrylic panel, making it look more like something from a dangerous country’s bank than a nurse station.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 03 - Ayumi and Erika fight the Dhampirized Class Rep

With explosive sounds on the left and right, all the benches left in the lobby were blown away. A zombie and vampire were representative Archenemies which could threaten a city, country, or even continent depending on how they used their powers. And now they had given into their anger and were charging forward.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 03 - Ayumi and Erika charge at Yurina/Lilith

“Still, is that any reason to punch me in the face before even saying hello? Girls should go for a slap instead.”

“I have about 10-times the muscular strength of a human, so a serious slap from me would have spun your head around 360 degrees.”

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 07 - Ayumi's strength

“Ayumi-chan.”

Something shot forward.

The merciless impact scored a direct hit to the bridge of drugged Karen’s nose.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 07 - Ayumi KOes Karen

With her open track jacket fluttering in the wind, Ayumi used her Zombie strength to clench her fist so hard it looked like it would break.

“Give it a rest already!!”

She did not hold back at all.

The noise may have been louder than the shot of a mass-produced gun.

It was like JB had been hit by a car. The young man with gray-dyed hair flew like a plastic bag in the wind. He scattered sand around with explosive force a few times and rolled more than 10 meters before finally coming to a stop.

~ My Vampire Older Sister and Zombie Little Sister 08 - Ayumi punches JB

I had heard a grinding sound for a bit now, but it was not coming from her back teeth.

“…uuuuuu!!”

The car parked next to her started to move with its engine still off.

This was the work of strength ten times that of a human.

If you gathered ten humans, you could move a car with brute force alone. Of course, you would generally want to remove the hand brake before you tried it. It helped here that the tires slid on the fine microplastic snow.

“What?”

This unexpected attack came from her blind spot.

The bumper slammed into the redheaded ponytail girl’s hip and she was pushed up onto the hood.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • Zombie Virus: Zombies are a type of Archenemy with biological origins. They come from the Acute Zombie Powder created by altering a virus found in the Caribbean (the original Zombie Powder virus) using a few different chemicals, including the drugs spoken of in the Haitian legends. Unlike regular zombies, Ayumi undergoes a special preservation treatment (thus the stitches covering her body) which prevents her from rotting as easily, allowing her to keep her superhuman athletic skills and intelligence.
    • Immortality: Zombies are considered to be immortal. While damaged by blades or bullets as usual, they are capable of ignoring lethal wounds and continue moving as they are destroyed. However, zombies lack a vampire's regeneration, so they have to repair the damage suffered through sewing. While crushing their heart won’t kill them, destroying their brain kills them instantly.
    • Infection: As the Acute name suggests, the virus carried by zombies is extremely virulent and has a nearly 100% chance of causing symptoms in both infected livestock and infected humans. Additionally, some plant species have been observed to undergo some cellular changes on exposure to the virus. A small bite or scratch is all a zombie needs to infect a healthy individual and create another zombie, which will happen within a few dozen seconds of being bitten. The virus allows infected to surpass their original body's natural upper limits. An individual zombie’s strength is reliant on the original being’s build and muscles, so their strength ranges from 1-10 times what it was in their original form. Unlike vampires, zombies have no hierarchy, so they won’t listen to anyone’s orders. Their intelligence and strength deteriorate as the rotting progresses. Particularly, the bodies of strong animals like rhinos or elephants who all are muscle break down much more quickly than human type zombies', so they don't last long.
