O Architect! Is this the world that you intended?
~ Amalthus

And why should I have to change? If I change, I lose everything. I lose my very self! Who in their right mind would accept such a fate?!
~ Amalthus's fear of changing himself

Summary

Amalthus (Japanese: マルベーニ, Marubēni) is a central antagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. He is the Praetor of Indol. He is extremely old, despite appearances, and is the Driver of Fan la Norne and Cole. He is also the Driver of Malos, making him the Driver of an Aegis. He is also a Blade Eater, having absorbed half of Fan la Norne's Core Crystal.

When Amalthus was a child, he and his mother were forced to flee from a group of men. His mother, rather than leave him in the hands of the men chasing them, pushes him down a steep hill where they would not search for him. He eventually awakens and stumbles through the woods until he comes to the mens' camp, where he finds his mother's dead body. Devastated and enraged, he uses a rock to kill the men as they sleep.

Years later, Amalthus travels around Alrest as an Indoline Quaestor, helping refugees and spreading Indol's philosophies. When he helps a soldier only to find them robbing a home, though, he wonders if this is the world the Architect wanted, before concluding that life on Alrest was equivalent to hell. Hoping to find answers and meet the Architect, Amalthus became the first person to climb the World Tree; he managed to reach Elysium, but he found it empty. He took the Core Crystals of Logos and Pneuma and returned to Alrest as proof of his deed. Back at Indol, he awakened Logos as Malos, while another Driver named Addam would awaken Pneuma as Mythra.

Following the Aegis War, Amalthus would lend his support to Rex's efforts to climb the World Tree and defeat Jin and Malos. Following Rex's defeat at the hands of Jin, though, he would take matters into his own hands and seize control of the majority of Blades and Titans on Alrest, launching an assault on the World Tree. Thus, he would be opposed by Rex and his allies, being defeated by Jin in the end.

Also has access to Haze's Gentle Zephyr Art, which cancels debuffs), Flight (As a Master Driver, Amalthus should be capable of flying like Rex), likely Non-Physical Interaction (Should be able to hit Addam's Phantasms like the base XC2 cast)

All previous resistances, plus Resistance to Death Manipulation (Cannot be killed by either the slayer skills or Percival's executioner), Absolute Zero (Can withstand Jin's Absolute Zero)

Attack Potency: Moon level (Should be comparable to Malos as his Driver) | Complex Multiverse level (Far stronger than before due to absorbing countless Core Crystals. Fought and damaged Master Driver Rex and Pneuma, damaging the latter enough to forcibly revert her to Mythra)

Speed: At least Relativistic+, likely Speed of Light (Should be comparable to Malos) | Massively FTL+, likely Infinite (Kept up with True Form Jin, Master Driver Rex, and Pneuma)

Lifting Strength: Unknown (Lacks lifting strength feats) | Immeasurable (Clashed with Master Driver Rex and Pneuma, sending the latter flying)

Striking Strength: Moon level (Comparable to his Attack Power) | Complex Multiverse level (Harmed Master Driver Rex and Pneuma with his tentacles)

Durability: Moon level (Comparable to his Attack Power) | Complex Multiverse level (Took several hits from Master Driver Rex. True Form Jin had to use all his remaining power to defeat him for good)

Stamina: Unknown (Is hardly shown in battle) | Superhuman (Can continue fighting despite taking significant damage from Rex and his allies)

Range: Unknown physically, Thousands of Kilometers with Blade Powers (Can send out a projection of himself to Rex despite physically still being on Indol. Can take control of almost every Blade and Titan on Alrest. Ether energy has been shown to be capable of reaching these distances) | Extended Melee Range physically, Thousands of Kilometers with Blade Powers

Standard Equipment: None notable

Intelligence: Genius (Has hundreds of years of experience and has traveled the world for a long time spreading Indol's philosophies. Ascended to the title of Praetor of Indol through the killing of his opponents, one through poison and another through convincing a Flesh Eater to kill them, without anyone knowing. Created the Blade Eater technology that infused humans with parts of the Core Crystals of Blades, granting them unique powers. In short, he is singlehandedly responsible for the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. In battle, he is able to contend with seasoned warriors such as Zeke and Jin)
