Summary
Abyss is a primary antagonist from the Marvel vs. Capcom series. A legendary creature born in ancient times during the era when magic prospered, Abyss is a forbidden weapon with the power of a god, which was forgotten by time and believed to be just a fairy tale, having been sealed away in an underground temple where it spent untold centuries in a deep sleep. However, when its resting place was disturbed by the actions of a pirate organization seeking to claim it, Abyss and its unparalleled power began to awake, releasing forth the winds which mutated and killed any kind of life on its path, as it attempts to bring the world back to primordial times by devouring all life on the planet to return everything to the "Sea of the Beginnings".
Having been involved in the actions that caused Abyss' rise, devastating environmental damage and plagues which threaten the Earth itself, Ruby Heart joined forces with a mutant superhero Cable, as they round up several heroes and villains from both Marvel and Capcom Universes to stop the mysterious dark entity itself. Individuals from Ruby's own universe, Amingo and SonSon, would also be recruited during their own journeys in response to horrors of Abyss' presence.
Abyss would come to face its demise by the hands of Ruby Heart's team, leaving only its core behind. Rendering it useless, the pirate leader tossed the core into the ocean, hopefully spelling the end of this being's terrible power.

- The Armour of Attrition: A incomplete armour of the God of Death that erodes at life and was created in ancient times, which is supposed to control Abyss' unparalleled power by encasing its true form inside it.[4] It also possesses a laser cannon in its chest and horns, which Abyss can grab and throw in the shape of a trident.[1]
Intelligence: Unknown (Displays a mastery in the weapons it uses, unconventionally taking apart its own horns and turning them into tridents to use against enemies, or utilizing chest and arm cannons.[1] Used The Guardian as a successful means of holding off its opponents, allowing itself to reach its peak form through metamorphosis.[4] However, much of Abyss' general intelligence is difficult to determine, only ever communicating through taunting laughs at most[1])
Weaknesses: Abyss can be defeated by destabilizing and blowing its core with enough powerful attacks once left fully exposed, though it's quick to bait an opponent and strike them back.[1]
Notable Attacks/Techniques:
- Glowing Spike: Abyss swings its open glowing palm downward. If it is standing beside one of the pillars in the background, debris will be flung towards the player as a follow-up attack.
- Orbs of Erosion: Abyss shoots four electric orbs with homing capabilities which shocks the opponent when hit.
- Trident Toss: Abyss grabs one of its horns and tosses it down at the opponent in the shape of a trident. The splashing effect on the ground also causes damage.
- Charging Headcrush: Abyss leans back and then charges forward with an aura of energy in front of itself. This attack keeps on going until it stops, which leaves Abyss open for a long time if dodged by jumping behind it.
- Erosion Cannon: Abyss covers its head as a wide and powerful laser cannon comes out from its chest, firing a huge energy beam which covers the entire battlefield.
- Erosion Hail: Abyss raises its arm and calls down a hail of fast spear-like energy beams which fall from the sky right where the opponent is positioned.
- Abyssal Flame: Abyss shoots out a flame blast from its arm cannon, which burns an opponent.
- Piercing Beam: Abyss shoots out a thin laser beam from its arm cannon.
- Piercing Blast: Abyss fires out a large laser from its cannon that pierces through its opponent and hits them rapidly, acting similar to Iron Man's Unibeam.
- Capturing Bubble: Abyss melts and three green bubbles come out from the ground, catching an opponent and stunning them for a short time, leaving them defenseless for Abyss to strike.
- Spinning Array: Abyss twists its body and spins around, shooting multiple laser beams in five directions, working similarly to Doctor Doom's Photon Array. If an opponent gets trapped from behind or gets too close during this Hyper Combo, Abyss can cause a lot of damage from being juggled by its spinning body.
- Rising Wrath: Abyss melts away and shoots out magma projectiles coming from the ground. This attack can be directed toward Abyss, away from them or on the opponent's current position.
- Giant Bash: Abyss smashes the floor with one of its limbs and a powerful pillar of energy comes out on impact, able to hit an opponent high in the air.
- Giant Abyssal Flame: Abyss shoots out a huge flame from its mouth similar to Dhalsim's Yoga Flame.
- Abyssal Wrath: Abyss leans forward, shooting out giant projectiles from its shoulders.
- Giant Leaping Bite: Abyss leaps forward with its maw fully open and then disappears into the ground, able to catch an unsuspecting opponent off-guard. Works similarly to Venom's Venom Fang.
- Hyper Abyssal Wrath: A very damaging Hyper Combo where Abyss uses a longer version of the Abyssal Wrath, able to chain it with other special moves to extend damage and make it extremely dangerous.
Note:
- ↑ Unlike other bosses in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, Abyss is the only one of these characters that has the implications that the larger cast's collaborative efforts were required to defeat it. Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes only has one ending, in which we see the characters departing after having defeated Abyss, whereas a game such as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 shows us that multiple characters can defeat the likes of Galactus by themselves. This is why several High 5-A characters tend to scale above bosses such as Galactus, Thanos, and Onslaught to varying levels, while Abyss remains a narratively much greater threat.
